Delayed Input 505 Post-Show Assessment

This was a weird one. We were ready for underwhelming PlayStation Plus news, but I did think I'd at least have a video presentation to pick apart and make fun of. Sony decided to simply create a post on their blog, which yeah I think was the right decision given the low magnitude of the announcement, but that doesn't necessarily make for a great video. The "exclusive games of questionable quality" was the first idea I had for making it into a list, like "OK if I can just come up with five more of these, I got something." It actually took me longer than I expected to think of good fake ideas for a streaming service. If you're just suggesting "The PS5 spits out free candy," it becomes too unrealistic to be funny, like you're not really saying anything. I almost titled this "Free Ideas" like I did for Twisted Metal, but that being one of my favorite episodes and this being one about a subscription service, I decided to save Free Ideas for something more fun.

I think the Exclusive Games segment demonstrates one of my bigger inadequacies--photoshop gags. If it was a late night talk show bit, each video game would have a solid visual joke to sell the punchline. I was attempting to present the games similar to how they appear on Sony's website--rounded off square images with the title in a unified font below--but the images were for the most part unaltered official art assets. So the real question is: Would it be funnier to see Knack seducing a novelist, or does the title work by itself? I'm still split on this. I think in this single instance of rattling off low budget titles it kind of worked to keep it minimal. You know, it's not like a Conan bit where I have to wait for the audience to laugh at each single joke.

On that note, the giftable trophies is an unusual bit because none of them work as jokes. It's like the humor to me is that these realistically would be sweet? So sometimes I realize I just like to say things that are fun to think about.

Also I wanted to share this with you this week. So I use Microsoft Edge on the editing PC. I know that sounds crazy but I haven't had a single crash since I started using it (and regularly restarting the computer throughout the edit). Anyway Edge has the worst homepage of probably any browser, full of dumb headlines from dumb websites, and sometimes they get me click and I always regret it. I want you to know I saw this headline as I was working on the edit, and I had the strength to not click. But the temptation was strong, the urge remains still. Now, I will always wonder.

QUESTIONS FROM YOU!

At some point in your creative process, did you consider putting the Honk during the "Change the power beep" bit?
It's funny, there was no audio cue in the script, I was just sure I'd find the beginning of a song that works looking around YouTube. I did try the honk for the beep though to see if it worked, and it really did not feel right. I think that joke only works if the new beep is something that's a true improvement. So for the honk I just looked for an awkward pause.

What if you switch to a middle parting haircut?
At this point I think I'm too set in my ways to start taking combing my hair seriously.

If Sony were to introduce a special edition of Bustafellows to the Premium PS Plus tier, that included an exclusive Bustafellow... would you subscribe?  Even just to see?
Knowing it would make a good video, I would sub in a second.

Is everyone really that eager to jump into the service model for everything now?
I honestly couldn't tell if this was a rhetorical question or not but yeah it seems like the answer is Yes.

Imagine that the trophies were real: which would be the most meaningful for you to receive, and which would be the most satisfying to delete from an enemy?
Receive: something like "Whoa I've never seen anyone do that before!"
Delete: something deeply meaningful. Like LittleBigPlanet had trophies for creating a level that got a certain amount of Likes. You can't get those hundred likes ever again.

That's it for today. Epic is doing a "State of Unreal" presentation on Tuesday. I feel like it's the kind of thing that won't be an actual big deal, but might provide some fun stuff to make a video out of. They've been running ads for it on Twitch with the promise of a Special Announcement even. You really never know with this kind of thing, but just think, if it's actually something stupid I might be able to sneak in my first ever good joke into Delayed Input.

Haha way to go not clicking. Stay strong.

I fucking hate you for this: "Watching Iain bring this young version of this character to life that I've been working on for a decade of my own life, it was really moving. I felt such a sympathy for this little guy. It was kind of mind-blowing to see him brought to life through Iain."
