Delayed Input 503 Post-Show Assessment

This was a franchise score episode. I've talked for a while about wanting to return to a regular segment and so I had "Kirby Franchise Score" penciled in for this week since the start of the season. I guess today I'm feeling weird about how un-weird the video is. It's kind of straightforward--I promise a Kirby franchise score, I talk about Kirby (and Shrek), and then deliver a Kirby franchise score. I think it's not bad to repeat segments necessarily, but I think the pendulum is about to swing back into a wild direction next week to compensate for the ordinariness of this ep.

This was also almost a video about not caring about the new Harry Potter game. The whole premise was sort of about the things we choose to care about, and how passing judgment on a franchise or person doesn't mean you're also passing judgment against their fans. It fell apart for me when I failed to develop any conclusion or valuable insight. Like I touched on super briefly in the Activision harassment episode, it feels like almost everything is "bad" and there are just invisible, uniquely personal qualifiers for what warrants "too bad." And it kind of feels like I'm making dozens of moral inconsistencies every day, this conversation goes on for years. It's fine stuff to think about a lot and be conscious of but it wasn't making a solid video. So I just made fun of Kirby's stupid friends instead.

QUESTIONS FROM YOU!

What are your thoughts about recording the show at higher resolution or frame rate?
At this point I don't think resolution would be worth boosting. For instance, none of this week's Kirby footage was posted higher than 1080p, so it would just be my weird face in 4K for no reason. Frame rate is something else though. In college we learned news/talking heads are regularly shot in 30fps, and 60fps was for sports and action, and I guess my head still plays by those rules. I wonder if most YouTube Talking People do 60fps today. If that has become the modern convention I don't think it would be too bad to switch.

Did you test out a variety of honk sounds before deciding on this one? What "honk factors" do you look for?
Epidemic will be weird with sound effects, like sometimes you need a baseball organ and they've got nothing except one hockey organ, but then if you search for a honk there are hundreds. Highly specific honks, labelled by make and model even. I was looking for lightly shrill, lightly concerned, and then honk length was probably the most important factor.

How many revisions do you go through for each script and how much editing do you do on the script? I remember you said you are internalizing the scripts when you get on camera so how much work goes into writing and revising?
It definitely varies episode-to-episode. The first versions of the scripts are usually not even scripts but just a collection of thoughts and half-takes, which then get organized into some sort of structure. So there's basically only the first draft before I get my costume and lights on. Then I'd say the second draft is what gets modified little by little when I'm rehearsing at the desk. Sometimes those changes don't make it into the document, like the bonus bit about retiring Shrek was never scripted, just something that came up at the end of rehearsing.
And then the script gets revised a lot on the spot too. Whispy Woods wasn't in the script or rehearsal, but he just popped into my mind when I was pretending to think about specific Kirby characters. Then I had to do a few more takes where I didn't laugh about calling Whispy Woods the Joker.

Is Shrek still better than Princess Bride?
Yes.

Metaknight represented the Vegeta archetype to me before I knew who Vegeta was.  Do you have a favorite antagonist from when you were growing up?
SHREDDER

goomba shirt kickstarter?
Can I tell you something I feel a little guilty about--in the Goomba shirt bit, there's a scripted "you know" pause. "You can put one on a shirt that says, you know, 'Not Ready for a Relationship'" So it sounds like something I'm just coming up with, and I wonder if that ruins the moments where it is truly something I'm just coming with.

Looking forward watching what you come up with for the timing of the honks. Will you try to hide some anyway?
Yeah I think if the honks stay at max volume it will actually get disruptive and annoying really fast. Ideally I would like for there to be a comment that's like "no honk this week??" and somebody responds "check 5min 12sec in" and then "oh ur right nice thanks"

That's it for today. As I suggested earlier I feel like I'm going to have to do some dumb character bit or something next week to keep the Delayed Input weirdness quotient high. I do have this gut dread of PlayStation announcing their subscription service soon, and I already wonder how I'm going to turn that dumb news into a fun video. Obviously it's something you shouldn't really plan for, much like my dream of pulling off one good joke in Delayed Input.

Comments

Sounds good about the upcoming weirdness. But even episodes like this one that you may think are too ordinary, they're still entertaining! The weird ones just have this extra bonus. Thanks for adding some fun to the end of the week.

I love weird episodes, but this is your show. Do what makes you happy. Oh, and please stick with 30fps.
