Delayed Input 403 Post-Show Assessment
Added 2022-01-02 21:34:51 +0000 UTCThis was a weird episode. As usual, it's kind of the result of the process of working through a bunch of things I didn't want it to be. There was a point Wednesday night where I was tossing around in bed late at night wondering what it says about someone if they believe their top 10 list of video games is worth the attention of others. I wouldn't say it's a habit of overthinking things, but it's a habit of losing track of what would make a nice, simple episode. I'd give myself a 5 out of 10 this week. The video hinges on the "What does your GOTY say about you" segment and would probably be pretty soft without it.
One decision I'm still questioning is when I clipped out a portion of the ep where I explain that most of my GOTY indifference is probably closely tied to my general overall indifference, that regardless of the presence of masterpieces my emotional availability was at an all-time low in 2021. It basically tied this episode into the general theme of Delayed Input, but it didn't conclude with a zippy punchline or button and already we're at 2 minutes before we get to the actual premise of the video. So I guess I'd call it a good editing decision but bad writing decision.
A weird takeaway is that this week's episode does have twice as many comments as usual. I generally don't care about that metric but it was funny to see the correlation. And while I did get a lot of valuable feedback on whether I should throw that PS5 box away or not, it seems fairly evenly split. I will say the Box Tossers seem slightly more aggressive and convincing.
QUESTIONS FROM YOU!
Has your perspective on the practice of GOTY’s changed in any way over the years? Has your perspective on how to make fun of GOTY’s changed over the years?
I definitely do feel like 2021 is less of a spectacular year. I'm not saying the games are bad, but in my mind there are no all-timers. To me GOTY picks this year feel like we're watching a middle school musical and somebody turns to you grinning and whispers "that one's mine!" You know that's probably a better analogy than the crayon thing I put in the script.
But yeah I guess the biggest difference between GOTYs now and seven years ago is that they seem more individual, like everyone, creators and audience, is responsible for having ten favorite games to represent themselves.
Do you have any Delayed Input goals for the year?
I'd like to make an impressive episode at some point. Something where people think, "Whoa, I can't believe he pulled this off." Currently I don't usually pull the trigger on an episode idea til the last possible moment, so it's hard to squeeze in special stuff. For this upcoming week I really wanted to do this bit where I fly to Orlando, go to Universal Studios, see Shrek 4D in its final week, and immediately leave. Omicron surges unfortunately tipped that idea over into being just a little too irresponsible, but you know, something weird like that would be fun.
And that's all for this week. I'd like to tell you that I won't have to make a 2022 Predictions or 2022 Most Anticipated episode but it might honestly come to that. One extra 2022 goal I have, well it's just more of a dream, I'd like to have one good joke in Delayed Input.
Comments
Oh My God! I scrolled the whole way back, unbelievable! E101 is the only non-weird ep.

2022-01-03 03:04:14 +0000 UTCI guess the audience's indifference is something this year has going for it, as I feel like maybe it gives list creators more freedom to be introspective/true rather than patronizing/commercial. If I cared, I might check out top ten lists to see if this holds up. But the only GOTY list I'm going to see is the Allies and maybe Kyle's if he makes one

2022-01-02 23:20:37 +0000 UTCHad this video aired a few years ago, I would've been like damn Kyle's in a bad mood. But I did notice that this year more and more random Top 10 lists were showing up in my newsfeed. There were obscure sources from things like SouthWestMom's.com Best Games of '21 and such. Maybe it's always been that way, but this year it seemed excessive to me. Then I also saw some sites one-upping others with Top 15 and Top 20. I know in the past I'd been more passionate about them, arguing in my head with the writer. But now I just browse the list and look for games that I haven't heard of before. Especially making note when I see the same ones show up in multiple lists. It was definitely a meh year though.
