Delayed Input 401 Post-Show Assessment

This was a slightly weird episode. I feel kinda bad--before the break I asked for your feedback on what you'd like to see more of with Delayed Input, and then the season 4 premiere was probably the most Regular episode I could have made. I still really want to mix up the backdrop, and get more creative with show formats, but somehow that four week break ended up more cramped than I imagined and this is what I came up with.

Lacking an Obviously Juicy Headline this week, there were a few ideas I was tossing around. Reviewing the Matrix demo was honestly a boring idea at first, but it won out when it turned into this thing where I could joke about this single dumb thing representing all of "next gen." (I thought that was clearly The Bit, but there are still a bunch of comments that are like "I disagree.") I'm still narrowing down what makes a Delayed Input, and this time I sold it to myself the second I thought of "Next gen is : QTEs you can't fail." Basically it's just finding a format that allows me to casually make rude observations.

And I think that's also the reason I declared what next week's episode will be for the first time. I don't think Kyle's Christmas Wish List (a very good comment called it Kyle's Crimmiswislis after my careless pronunciation) is a super good idea for an episode but it will commit me to doing something kinda weird, and I can at least skip the prolonged topic-picking period next week.

QUESTIONS FROM YOU!

What was the name of the music library you had access to with Viacom in the early Final Bosman days?
That was Extreme Music. I looked into it when starting Box Peek back at Easy Allies, and it is ridiculously expensive. I talked to them on the one phone even, and it was this awkward thing where I was like "I just want to use these songs for one web show, can I get like a discount?" and they were super nice and said "Yes, surely. If it's only ten episodes, we could make it just [more money than you make in a year]"

If they announced tomorrow that Insomniac's next Spider-Man game was on Unreal Engine 5 (assuming no change to release date), would you be any more excited to play it?
Not at all. A weird UE5 procedurally generated city like this is probably better suited for the sort of game where you're a huge slime monster who wants to suffocate people under your goo.

If you can say it without spoiling context, what was your favourite line in No Way Home?
I definitely can't do that.

I don’t think the vest needed an undershirt.
What even is your definition of a vest

Hoping for another metacritic score bet on the latest WB smash bros fighter.  Would love to see another quote on the wall?
I actually think this question mark might be a typo, but yeah I'd love to do another episode like that. I think what made it work is that it was an exciting announcement that came out of nowhere for a game that would be releasing in just a couple months. I kind of  just have to luck into episodes like that.

How many different meanings for NFT did you come up with or was it a one and done?
I had two more, with the intent of just rattling them off:
Yeah I’m invested in NFT. No Friendly Touching.
Yeah I got an NFT. Never Feeling Talented.
But I think the joke worked better with just the one.

Also do you keep notes/a script off to your left or was it Mucho/someone catching your attention
There's actually nothing over there, I look over that way to think about what to say next generally.

That's all for this week. Kyle's Crimmiswislis should be fun to put together. I feel like I can warn you privately here on Patreon--it's not going to be a sincere wish list. In fact I believe it will be a great opportunity to try to incorporate my first ever good joke into Delayed Input.

Comments

I usually love the crazier episodes more, but I very much enjoyed that "regular" show. I - finally ! - watched Boxpeek during the break. It was great but maybe I had my fill of your unhinged creativity for the month ;-)

Hey man. I loved the Matrix breakdown / takedown. Personally my favorite episodes of Delayed Input are when you look to specific new technology / titles on the horizon and pick them apart. I sustain myself on a diet of caffeine and hype. Hype is the most precious thing there is. Seeing you dive into hype (both your own and that of the general public) on upcoming games like Elden Ring & Halo while also humorously dismantling what we've been shown so far is peak entertainment. I really enjoyed, and agreed with, the Pikmin analogy. I work as a peon underling for a juggernaut gaming studio (probably shouldn't say which one) and I'd say the biggest setback to a studio getting so big is lack of vision. With so many cooks in the kitchen, and so many studios around the globe, it seems impossible for meaningful conversations to be had regarding what new tech is worth investing in, and how it should be used once it exists. Typically, the bulk of potential new concepts get thrown out in favor of yet another cookie-cutter entry in a big franchise, due to investor pressure and general uncertainty / lack of communication. Instead of Pikmin getting made, we just throw more and more Marios into each new game. It's disappointing. It stirs my soul to see this kind of thing being made fun of. I'm truly curious what features will define "next-gen" this time around, and I think that's a question worth continuing to ponder in your unique comedic way. Thanks for the awesome content, Kyle.
