Post-Show Assessment - PlayStation Showcase Hot Takeaways
Added 2021-09-10 18:24:27 +0000 UTCThe structure of this Patreon is built to prevent getting burned out--8 weeks on, 3 weeks off, with 1 weird video in the middle of that break that's supposed to be a sort of creatively-refreshing vanity project. So far, I've used this opportunity to make two Hot Takeaways videos that sit comfortably in my wheelhouse. In both cases it's been an understandable pivot due to event timing, but for this week it was a while before I bailed on my alternate ideas. I normally don't like talking about undeveloped ideas because I want to stow them as potential surprises in the future, but at the same time I feel like creators talk about their canceled ideas all the time. Here are a couple of things I was writing, and why I didn't do them.
The Yo! Noid Challenge
This is a sketch where I'm playing myself, I'm going to take on the Yo! Noid Challenge. Apparently the entire internet believes you cannot beat the first level of Yo! Noid on NES without ordering a pizza. (that part is not real) It can't possibly be that hard. But then of course I accidentally order a pizza before I finish the first level.
So you get exactly where that goes--Kyle keeps introducing new obstacles to prevent himself from ordering a pizza but keeps finding a ways to order one anyway. Kyle gets increasingly frustrated, ends up just eating pizza.
I bailed on this for a couple of reasons. Firstly I originally had the idea of the Yo! Noid Challenge back in Easy Allies days, and it just works a lot better with 2 or 3 people than 1 person. Doing the sketch solo, it's funny but it's still the weaker version of the concept. Also, while there's something still innately fun about the Yo! Noid Challenge to me, by the end of the script I really don't understand the point of any of it. It's true there's no point in anything I make but this felt especially dumb for dumb's sake. Looney Tunes kinda stuff. (I got in my head)
B.A.S.H. Issue #1
As part of the Tetrisathon charity stream a couple weeks ago, we read through two comics I made as an 11-year-old: B.A.S.H. issues 2 and 3. The first comic is mysteriously lost to time. My goal was to set up What We Know, What We Don't Know, and The Purpose of a Prequel, and then create B.A.S.H. issue 1 as a motion comic.
I was creating a fun script (It was probably too dialogue heavy, turns out writing comics is hard) but I had this sudden weird feeling, like Am I being too cute with this? Why am I showing such reverence to my own self? Like this would be really sweet if I was making Issue 1 for a family member, or if I just found these two comics on the sidewalk. Suddenly it just felt like Me, Me, Me, another video that didn't really need to exist. (I got in my head again)
So clearly I accepted that the smart thing to do was to make a Hot Takeaways for the hyped-up Sony event. Production went fairly smoothly, ~1 hour to write, ~half hour to shoot, but then editing took five or six hours? This kind of video requires a lot of footage, and honestly it makes it kind of fun to put together. While another hot takes video isn't particularly creatively enriching, it's still a fun challenge to produce. There's something kind of nice about going into Go Mode and just making a whole video whether you like what you're doing or not.
QUESTIONS FROM YOU!
Which were you more excited by, Wolverine or Spider-Man 2?
Both of these were kinda hollow announcements to me. They're concept trailers. I was definitely buzzed watching live but I don't think this style of trailer has a lasting effect anymore. Between the two though, Spider-Man.
Was now a bit early to announce Uncharted 4/LL on PC (coming out early 2022)?
Yeah I think it was all a bit too early. I'm really not sure why this was an early September event and had so little to show for the upcoming fall season. The Uncharted collection was probably announced here to fluff up the PlayStation Studios portion of the show.
That's it for today. I'll be back with more goofy insights and perpetual self-doubt in two weeks!
Comments
to be fair, delayed input episodes are already a bit on the more experimental/out there side, at least most of the time, compared to your more "game news show" oriented content of the past (final bosman, the easy allies podcast). I don't think it was a bad idea to provide your audience with a more straightforward Hot Takes type of video as a stopgap between the more unpredictable DI episodes -- I think in some ways it's what the people want to see. it's comfort food, in a good way. I'm sure we'll all be hyped for some kind of insane, experimental, creative thing when you put those out, but I personally wasn't disappointed by this video at all and I don't think your audience will be either.
2021-09-10 18:46:40 +0000 UTCI was just writing this on the previous post so I'll past it in here: LOVED that ending. And "Young, high fashion Batman villains" was on point. The thing that resonated with me the most was your comment about next gen not being very intriguing yet. Maybe it's just early in this new cycle? I'm trying to think back to jumps from one gen to the next and it kind of felt like there were some dry spells as developers figured out the new systems. Can you think of something early on in a previous generation that you were blown away by?
