Delayed Input 207 - Post-Show Assessment
Added 2021-08-21 22:41:33 +0000 UTCThis was a weird episode. As I sort of hinted to in last week's post, I knew this was going to be a busy week coming into it, so the plan was:
"I'm going to try to pre-produce the episode as much as possible leading into Wednesday/Thursday, but as always that really relies on me thinking an idea is good for more than one day in a row."
You can probably tell exactly what happened. It's become pretty regular that I come up with more trash bin ideas than good ideas, but I think this busy week might have aggravated that habit. I couldn't figure out any concept that I found meaningful, something worth adding to the internet. I actually wrote a ton about Pokemon, nothing particularly compelling, but it's all in the scrap heap if we ever need to go back to it.
Days and hours were slipping through and I really had nothing good. Normally I like to make sure I have the content edit of an episode done at 5pm on Thursday, which means I'm just filling in music and b-roll and graphics from there. This week, it was 7pm on Thursday and I still didn't know what my episode was about. At that point, I didn't need "something meaningful" but just "something."
So "Top 5 Things I Wish I Told My Barber" was written in 1 hour, shot in 1 hour, and then edited in 4-5 hours. I know that edit seems long, stupid simple stuff like that Crystal Dynamics/Eidos Montreal timeline takes me much longer than necessary. Schedule in a half hour for the Shrek Monkey, gotta get his bobble right. (Fun fact: I accidentally knocked over my bottle of water at one point in the shoot and used that for a sound effect when the Shrek Monkey walks away) I know I'm slow but also the edit is something I really didn't want to rush through; I think people can smell a rushed edit and it almost ruins the whole point of making a video for an audience to see. It's like "Why should I give you my time if you weren't willing to invest your own?"
Also I was making my YouTube thumbnail when I realized the title graphics said "the barber" instead of "my barber," so I had to fix all of those and do a new export, it somehow added like 25 minutes. That was probably more of a sleepy brain error.
The wild thing about this is that the response to the episode is mostly positive. I don't think people are getting the impression I smashed this together as quickly as I did. One person on YouTube called it their favorite episode and I didn't see that kind of thing coming. Today's lesson might be that I should probably should stop stressing over waiting for the perfect idea every week. Sometimes the dumb idea works wonders.
QUESTIONS FROM YOU!
As someone who struggles with trying to explain these things, what sort of cut do you tell your barber you want to get the cut you've got?
Honestly I said that I can feel my hair thinning out and I wanted to make a smooth transition into thinning out gracefully. Also I said that I'm a little simple and don't really use a lot of hair products, he kinda just took it from there.
Did your barber even know what metroid was? / Are they into games themselves or was it more of a going through the motions of a chatty haircut kind of conversation?
He was actually a cool dad and liked to share his Switch with his son. His favorite recent game was Tony Hawk 1+2 and he was most looking forward to the rumored PS2-era GTA remasters.
Unlockable moves in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl was a misunderstanding on IGN's part, it's not in the game.
I saw this in the YouTube comments, I guess the developers corrected IGN on their own Discord. Part of me wants to correct myself next week, like I wanted to when I mixed up Tetris Blast and Tetris Attack, but I can foresee a demand for regular weekly corrections popping up and I don't want to see it. This one I'm just going to blame IGN for.
You seem to be getting your confidence back. Is that because you've been back on the horse for a while now?
While I wouldn't agree that I feel confident, I'd say it does feel like I am getting my skills back, and even developing undeveloped skills, which is sort of the point of Delayed Input for me. I'm glad I can convey confidence though.
Next week is the Season 2 finale and against all odds I currently have an idea that I like and want to make happen. It'll be another busy week for sure but I feel like I have huge head start on this one. Things can change in a second though, and also I wonder if a post-Gamecom ONL ep might be more appropriate, so as always all I can tell myself is, "we'll feel it out." I'm positive that I would like to attempt to write one good joke, I think it would be a special moment if I finally got one in the season finale.
Comments
I totally get why people liked that episode. Everyone likes lists and top 5.

2021-08-22 01:36:56 +0000 UTCI looked at my partner and said "The Shrek Monkey is why this episode is coming out so late" and I'm glad I wasn't totally correct. I'm glad the stupid idea still became a fun episode. I know that one good joke is coming... someday.
