Delayed Input 206 Post-Show Assessment
Added 2021-08-13 18:39:42 +0000 UTCThis was a weird episode. This was the first week I made a withdrawal from the Delayed Input scrap heap. I was developing an idea I was pretty excited about, but fairly deep in I had this feeling like, "I'm not in the right state of mind for this one, let's save it for later." I just couldn't bring the right energy to it. So as I was making a hefty deposit into the scrap heap document, I saw this little bit about "concept trailers" and it tied in (roughly) with how I was feeling about the Indie World Showcase. Boom, new episode, the system works.
In the end the script is basically three parts: Indie World stuff, talking about trailers, and more praise for Sakurai. There are actually only three over-the-shoulder images to punctuate this. (By the way, I don't know what those are called still. Internally I just call it the box) So while I wouldn't call the topics unrelated, the format of the episode itself is more like a flow of thoughts, with a broad soft conclusion at the end. There's a funny comment on YouTube that says "this would have been better as a list," which is you know, my regular thing. That person isn't wrong, lists work, it's just not too fun to do repeatedly. I guess I'm learning if I want to try out loosey goosey flowey videos I can at least make a greater effort to adhere to a theme, which is something I messed up last week as well.
This episode ended up having maybe more b-roll than any other before it, despite the fact that, given the late start, a responsible version of myself would have written something that would make for an easier edit. Ultimately I like this freedom to write whatever I feel like and then make the edit work later, you know, let Future Kyle deal with it. Particular example: I was just about to export the video, already hours behind schedule, but there's this one part about how Nintendo typically announces and demonstrates their games at the same time, and there's an inner debate, "Do I need to show something there? No. People can imagine it. They know what I'm talking about." But it's the kind of thing where if I was asking the question, I already knew the answer, so I sighed and went to go find a WarioWare trailer. (Which is actually unique in that Wario himself is talking to us the audience the whole time. It's a really weird trailer that I never thought twice about. Maybe there's something there for the scrap heap)
Considering this video was produced relatively quickly, I'm pretty okay with how it turned out. I'm most disappointed with my closeup shots of the Lego set--it was the first time I pulled out my huge Box Peek super closeup lens in a long time and it was just not working with the little baby tripod I currently use.
Questions from you!
Hey Kyle, they announced a Pokemon Presents for next week. Being the Pokemon super fan you are, will this be the jumping off point for next week? Or is covering two Nintendo presentations over two weeks redundant for you.
This is maybe ultra cynical but I imagine that I would only have bad things to say about it, and I gotta stop being mean about Pokemon. That said there's probably going to be a snarky reference at some point. Generally though I don't think it should be a problem to do two Nintendoey episodes in a row, or even two Pokemon episodes in a row, if I can find a unique angle.
Next week is a busy week for me so I'm going to try to pre-produce the episode as much as possible leading into Wednesday/Thursday, but as always that really relies on me thinking an idea is good for more than one day in a row. One idea I've been pretty consistent with is this concept of maybe writing one good joke for the show.
Comments
You don't need to stop being mean to Pokemon, they deserve all the criticism they get. They're worth 105 billion dollars for godsake. We all need to stop putting faceless profit hungry corporations on these mantels and act like their flawless or impossible to criticize. If you want to be mean go ahead. It's not like they're ever going to change for the better. Keep up the good work.

2021-08-17 19:43:55 +0000 UTCI dig the idea of having one good joke. But let's make sure we call a spade a spade, because if you manage to shovel that in, then people are going to want two good jokes. Or whatever man, do what you gotta do to rake in those YouTube views.
