Delayed Input 302 Post-Show Assessment
Added 2021-10-02 20:17:46 +0000 UTCThis was a weird episode. As the intro implies, I tried out a few things but wasn't really finding anything worth making a whole video about. It was shamefully late on Thursday when I decided to just run with multiple stories. For the segment title I was between "Headline Rummage" and "Low Stakes Bonus Takes." Today I kinda wish I went with Headline Rummage, I was really 50/50 on this.
Regardless of the dumb title, I think in the end it was an okay way to introduce a subject, make a dumb point, and move on without having to really drag anything out. The thing I'm probably happiest about is the just over ten minute runtime; that's pretty clean. You can't really bop around talking about unrelated stories for too long before the audience starts checking out. Near the end of the script I was really scrounging around for a 5th headline, and it took me a long time to realize I only wanted a 5th story because I always do the number 5. 4 works sometimes. 4 is a cool number too.
I guess due to the straightforward nature of the format, this week nothing much changed from the script to the performance to the edit. The original cold open bit was about Venom but as I was recording it I could tell it wasn't funny. That bootleg Pokemon card I picked off of the sidewalk was fortunately just hanging out at my desk, so I made a pivot. I keep a lot of weird trash around just for moments like these. Seriously though, I think that might be one really nice benefit about recording these alone. I can basically workshop bits and key points without having to feel self-conscious about it. If you saw my first take of most jokes, you would probably stop watching my stuff forever.
QUESTIONS FROM YOU!
Is your decision to immediately cut to what you're talking about (for example- the edit to the Nibel Bluepoint tweet) one of convenience or one of style?
This is a good question that makes me think I messed something up. Generally if I can show what I'm talking about I'd like to show it. For instance, I was just about to export the video when I had the sudden feeling I should show the Shadow of the Colossus and Demon's Souls remakes as I mention them. Something like the Nibel tweet works doubly since it's also a citation. So I can't say it's convenient to cut to what I'm talking about but I'm also not sure this show has any style. The decision is one of potentially-misguided impulse, I guess.
Seriously can I get your take on Kena: Bridge of Spirits?
I streamed the whole game in two parts last week, I really like it. I don't think the rots are cute though.
Next week's episode will be coming in fairly early--I'm taking a short vacation and should hopefully be gone way before my usual late night uploads. Once again I am indebted to Masahiro Sakurai, whose final Smash presentation early on Tuesday is just locked-in juicy Delayed Input material. It's a bad idea to plan ahead too much since you have no idea what the reveal and surrounding narrative will be, but I'm thinking it would be pretty cool if for this special episode I try writing one good joke.
