Delayed Input 202 Post-Show Assessment
Added 2021-07-16 19:42:51 +0000 UTCThis was a weird episode. I didn't realize I had that much to say about a Nickelodeon Smash Bros game until I started writing some thoughts down. The first real point was this concept of people who grew up appreciating things being in the position to create those very things. It was a thought, but not an episode. I wasn't excited about the script, trying to find some sort of hook for it, and then I thought about how fun it would be to add stakes for coming up with a prediction. It's like I don't just need to make a video entertaining to the audience but entertaining to me to produce it.
Looking over the comments so far it really seems like I went too high with my estimated score. (In the script it was actually 82. I guess in reciting my thoughts I convinced myself the game will be one point better than that) While I always have this feeling where I have no idea what's good or what's boring, this week I really couldn't gauge what kind of episode this was before uploading. Frankly I'm happy to see trashy people like myself make their own guesses in the comments. It's in poor taste but it's fun.
The Steam Deck news rolled in on editing day and I was actually grateful for it. The post-credits bit I had recorded was not really working out. Sometimes when I'm scripting I can be loose in parts, like "I'll figure that out when I'm performing." Most of the time it works out, like "Big Cake for Big Boy," but the bonus bit this week was essentially a 3-minute ramble on my relationship with repetitively rewatching shows I don't like in my childhood, and how current generations have absolute control over their entertainment, but then no real conclusion on that. I was happy to be to delete it.
This episode actually turned out to be a mini beast to edit. The content edit--just clipping down my talking head--went smoothly and I'm getting a little better at that. Adding in b-roll and examples of the things I'm talking about isn't particularly creatively demanding work, it just takes me a long time to capture and implement it. Besides writing it's the biggest chunk of time every week and it's something I hope to become more efficient at as we go. I forget that I made 100 episodes of Final Bosman but my experience as an editor is far less than that. Like I've probably edited fewer than 40 videos in my life? I hope to keep getting better, this stuff can be fun sometimes. When I'm showing the comparable OpenCritic scores in this episode it looks super janky, I know.
Oh I also changed how I do compression on my own audio for this one, I don't know if that really made any noticeable change but let me know if it's worse.
Questions from you!
Did you buy that rad shirt just for this episode?
I bought that shirt on Monday, it was just dumb luck that it happened to be Nickelodeon orange.
You do realize that your dream episode would probably also be the dream episode for some of your viewers right?
It wasn't something that I wanted until I was trying to come up with stakes, but now I really want it too. I like the idea that this imaginary episode has a reputation now. If I posted something that abstract without context it would have a certain reaction, but now if it happens, the Dream Episode is finally a reality. This kind of thing is something I enjoy about the regular show format, sort of creating a meta continuity.
Next week's goal is once again to get everything finished on schedule. I wonder if I should be collecting trailers and screenshots as I'm scripting; I really just save that for last every time. And I know this sounds crazy but I also want to try writing one good joke.
Comments
at least for me i really liked the audio mix this episode, comparing the first two episodes i could barely make out the background music for the first episode (although that could also be due to the type of music you used) even as far back as bosman at home there was something not quite right about the added background music but this episode seemed to get much closer to that final bosman feel, i thought u might have tweaked the volume but it could be the change of audio compression
