Delayed Input 201 Post-Show Assessment
Added 2021-07-09 19:54:08 +0000 UTCThis was a weird episode. It was tough to finally decide to make the season 2 premiere not that special. I worked to make a new backdrop but it turned out very ugly. I bought a few season premiere sweaters but they just were all poor decisions. I thought there should be some sort of meta season premiere narrative but it came off a little forced.
In the end I think just treating this like any other week was the best choice. For the episode itself I really wrote a bunch of different topics, there were too many to choose from after two weeks off. Some of that stuff was kinda good, it'll go into the Scrap Heap doc for a rainy day, but for the most part nothing was really feeling Worth Talking About. Maybe I mean Worth Making A Video About. Fortunately I was able to find an angle on something I was pretty sure wasn't already heavily covered.
One huge change for season 2 is that I've finally added music. That process was really interesting. Anki emailed me after the first week of Delayed Input, just to say that some music could really help the show, and that they were down to collaborate on some new music so I wouldn't be completely beholden to Epidemic Music. And I think it was ep 2 or 3 when I finally realized that email was correct. So we bounced back and forth for weeks until finding something that matched the delicate tone of Delayed Input. Incidentally there haven't been many comments about it at all--I wonder if that's a good thing?
Lastly Yes I did forget about Shrek again, so it looks like we'll have to begin a new Shrekstreak.
Questions from You!
Was it a deliberate choice to include at least one curse word in each episode (often only exactly one!) in order to differentiate your new show from your old ones?
This is a good question--the answer is that No, there is no swear quota but there has been a genuine effort to talk a little more like my actual self, who definitely swears.
Funny story--I heard about my niece and nephew watching a Delayed Input recently, and I said "Oh no, which one?" and it was the Arms Like Cloud ep and so I said "Oh nice, there's no swearing in that one!" and my Mom says "No, you said Shit in the first five seconds." Ah well.
Had you not stumbled across that 99 Cent game developer, can you tell how your script/story would have developed then?
When I move on from a topic it's mostly because I'm not having fun with it, and the Breakthrough Games thing was like Oh this is fun, this excites me. So I'd say I probably would have moved on to some other topic, since Sony's poor treatment of smaller indies isn't that interesting to me by itself.
Do you notice that you blink a lot on delayed input? Just a cursory glance at a livestream shows you don't blink nearly as much. Maybe it's lights or performance?
YES. Big time when I was editing this episode. Firstly, my contacts are itchy, but you'll also see when I'm going off script that it's not happening as much. So I think the constant blinking has something to do with me trying to remember the script? Really I'd humor any theories anyone has on this.
That's it for this week. I'm pretty happy with ep 201 but really next week I'd like to try writing one good joke.
