Also did you notice the foreshadowing of the first few episodes in East Blue, someone told Luffy that his devil fruit won't be special in Grand Line. So far we've been introduced new fruits on every island.

It was stated by Oda in an SBS, which is like a thing where he answers fan questions and drops side information that isn't too relevant (most of the time)
