Compared with these movements the interest in scientific psychology is negligible. What is striking about gnostic systems is that they are based exclusively upon the manifestations of the unconscious, and that their moral teachings do not balk at the shadow side of life." I've often thought about this passage, especially since reading/listening to Owen. Anglican priest Christopher Bryant connected this phenomenon to 21st century movements like transcendental meditation, the Unification Church and the Children of Light, and I'm sure you can draw a line from there to today's wicca/astrology/occult/witchy/yoga style instagram "spirituality". Christopher Bryant explained it as a turning away from a "stale" Christianity that did not offer spiritual experience, together with the cloking of spiritualism in the prestige of Science as a revolt against dogmatic religion that demanded its tenets to be taken on faith without experiential verification. I think the fuller explanation is more along the lines of what is talked about here. The spectre of many gods/many divine paths/creating your own reality provides both self-validation and and avoids the necessity of submitting to a single source of truth outside of one's self. The dogma of Scientism assists in the construction of that worldview, as do these other forms of spirituality. Jung saw it, and you can draw a line from there to what is discussed in this podcast. really enjoyed this episode.
