The deal with Gandalf can be a little confusing - Him and the other Wizards (5 in total) are basically lesser gods and were sent to Middle Earth by the gods to aid and consult in the battle against Sauron. The colours indicate their rank with Saruman the White being the highest rank followed by Gandalf the Grey. Because Gandalfs physical body died in the pursuit of his task and because Saruman abandoned his goal of aiding mankind, Gandalf were given the White rank instead and sent back to Middle Earth again ☺️
