New Main Channel Video: Jack Frost | Anatomy of a Franchise

Hey everyone,

Hope all is well and hope you enjoy this. I'm going to be spending the next week trying to knock out some Darksides videos, and am also now deep into work on the werewolves project. It is going to be three videos with the same structure as the ones I did on Witches, but stylistically it is going to be very experimental in a way that I hope is fun. I'm really excited about it. Also, if there are any werewolf movies that you particularly enjoy or that you think are interesting that you would like to see included in part three let me know here and I'll make sure they make it onto the list.

Thanks again,

-Zane

New Main Channel Video: Jack Frost | Anatomy of a Franchise

Comments

I had never heard of this franchise until I watched your video -- glad I did! The different shapes Jack can take actually remind me a bit of Kirby, who can also transform into a block. I've been watching your video essays for years; this was another great video!

Also, I remember seeing this movie's cover in blockbuster while looking for the Michael Keaton movie and being freaked out by the cover as a 4-5 year old kid. But then again, I roamed freely in every blockbuster I ever entered into as a kid.

Has there ever been a werewolf movie that has contemplated the complexities of being in a relationship with someone who's a werewolf or has lycanthropy in any meaningful way?

Kale Smith

Late Phases too!

LilPizzaBear

Just remembered that BTAS had a werewolf episode

Arcee the Autobot

It’s all good, it does make navigating long videos a lot more convenient though

Original Orangutan

I think Cursed is a lot of fun too, it’s definitely getting a section in part 3 about it

In Praise of Shadows

I can do that in the future for sure, I’ve always been bad about forgetting to add them to longer projects

In Praise of Shadows

Good man 👍

Original Orangutan

I think cutting projects into multiple shorter videos is a good idea. The John Waters video was fantastic but it was way too long for some people to be able to finish (especially without timestamps). The shorter video format seems to be what the YouTube algorithm is pushing right now. (But please do add timestamps, it makes it so much easier to navigate through a video essay)

Original Orangutan

I can’t wait to watch this! Im sure this is already on your shortlist, but Cursed is a fun one that I think gets a bad wrap. I’m not saying it’s high art or anything. But it’s fun, and was also one of my first date movies 🥰 And what can I say, as a millennial I just love that cast.

Great video! The first Jack Frost film popped into my mind not too long ago and I was struggling to remember if I had actually watched it or if I just remember seeing that iconic box art all the time when I was younger. And when you started talking about the terrible children's voices in the opening credits, it immediately clicked that I HAD seen it, cause I remember feeling similarly repulsed by that dialogue. That whole chunk on horror video box art near the beginning almost could be a whole video on its own. I legitimately owe so much of my love of horror media to VHS covers from this era, and wandering the horror aisle of Blockbuster when I was too young to be able to watch 90% of the movies there. I would look at the box art and my imagination would run wild at what they could be, not realizing that a good chunk of them were low-budget garbage and nowhere near as good as the box art would suggest. And yeah, the Jack Frost one was definitely one I remember stopping and looking at every single time, it really demanded your attention.

Omg this is a dream come true. You’re telling me I get three highly researched, thought provoking, experimental, multi hour long videos about favorite monster ever by one of my favorite YouTubers?? I am genuinely so hyped. Thank you for posting such high quality videos, the effort you put into your work doesn’t go unnoticed. We are so back!! 😁🐺🐺

Diego Prieto

Will the Dogman cryptid get mentioned or appear in any featured films? Because that opens up a whole other avenue to explore another time with cryptid horror that deal specifically with the likes of Bigfoot, Mothman and company (but not grey aliens - they're separate). One of the Blair Witch Project directors has done a couple

Arcee the Autobot

I can make that happen for sure

In Praise of Shadows

im begging you to do a quick mention of Alvin and the chipmunks meet the wolfman and scooby doo and the reluctant werewolf in the werewolve vids

47Cartoonguy

Excellent! Cant wait to watch

grigori karpin

Definitely feel free to! Genuinely is helpful

In Praise of Shadows

Oh well then if it's okay with you I'll do it more often lol

Arcee the Autobot

This is great thank you! Genuinely very helpful, a lot of these were on the there already but I’m trying to make this project very comprehensive. No need to feel embarrassed at all this kind of stuff is very appreciated

In Praise of Shadows

Feel kinda embarrassed now that I see how long it is on patreon

To answer the werewolf question, I have a list of hidden gems + newer stuff… The Werewolf (1913) Werewolf of London The Face at the Window Fangface La Bête (a Lokis adaptation – your co-writer might know the novella) Waldemar Daninsky/Hombre Lobo film series The Werewolf of Washington (a Nixon satire) Werewolves on Wheels obviously the major players from the 80s werewolf resurgence like Teen Wolf and Wolfen Werewolf Hour (example of Soviet horror – was lost for 30 years) Wolf Girl (2001 about a freakshow) Romasanta Wolves of Wall Street (a David DeCoteau film – not to infringe on your long-term plans but I could see him as a future career study as he’s like the love child of John Waters and Charles Band) Brotherhood of the Wolf (should be included for the Gevaudan inspiration and apparently influenced Bloodborne’s Gothic huntsman aesthetic - it's a nice link between history and a beloved game of modern times) Doctor Who’s werewolf episode where a werewolf tries to take over the British Empire by biting Queen Victoria (I still have an action figure of the werewolf in my garage) two separate films called The Boy Who Cried Werewolf (newer one is a Nickelodeon kids horror film) Blood & Chocolate Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (filled with classic monster movie references while still being an all-around amazing film) That classic Ben 10 episode about an alien werewolf (those horror monster episodes were the best) Red Riding Hood and Little Red Rotting Hood Wer Wolfwalkers (not a horror film but it’s sitting on a 99% RT score for a reason) Wolfblood (was a 2010s British TV show about two werewolf kids in the rural North that vibed a lot, loved the theme song) WolfCop Werewolves Within Werewolf by Night Female Werewolf Bloodthirsty (queer werewolf film) The Cursed (pairs well with The Vourdalak) Cocaine Werewolf My Animal (queer werewolf film) The Wolf of Snow Hollow (Robert Forster’s last film) The Forest Hills (Shelley Duvall came out of retirement for this before her passing) Werewolves (new film starring Frank Grillo - needs a better name) Wolf Man 2025 For videogame characters, I can think of Killer Instinct’s Sabrewulf and Darkstalkers’ Jon Talbain I know that part 1’s script is supposed to be complete but is there any chance you could look into adding Thiess of Kaltenbrun if he’s not already there? Thiess has a really cool story – if Robert Eggers ever makes a werewolf film, I could see it being about either him or Gevaudan

Arcee the Autobot

To make the workload easier I’m actually not writing part two in this series which is on werewolves in lit. I’m writing parts one and three, and working with a co-writer who has a background in lit on that one who will do that section more justice than I ever could. I’ll pass this along to them so that they can look into it.

In Praise of Shadows

not a video but a book, in the cirque du freak series there is a wolf man, who is the opposite of a typical werewolf in that he is a pure mindless wild beast- which plays into how he is able to murder a child because a hippy releases him thinking it is inhumane he is caged, and characters expect him to have some semblance of intelligence or humanity, which he does not- which i find interesting, might not fit in the video at all but its the first werewolf I think of!

Eri

I love the new content, it feels like a return to the style that first made me subscribe to you patreon… keep on going!

cam williams

Yeah! Four of the next five Darksides videos are either winter or holiday themed. I definitely plan to use Darksides as an outlet to cover stuff like that that wouldn’t normally fit in with the main channel’s focus

In Praise of Shadows

Hi Zane would you consider doing more small-scale Christmassy franchise videos as a tradition around that time of year even if the algorithm is less active? For Black Christmas, Gremlins or even Wallace & Gromit for a non-horror change that still has some creepy/dark comedy moments (the films are generally considered Christmassy in the UK despite the lack of Christmas in them).

Arcee the Autobot

Don't mean to possibly out you but are you by any chance the same Trevor Collins from the Red Web podcast?

Arcee the Autobot

Ohhh new upload yay !!!

Arcee the Autobot

Christmas literally came early, amazing 👏

Samie Hartley

Love your work. With how much there is in the world to experience, I'll never have enough time to experience it all. You allow me to see things I might normally not. Thanks for everything you do, my dude!

Tussaux

what a wonderful Thursday treat

Trevor Collins

Dog Soldiers!

LilPizzaBear

I'm sure you've already go this down, but just in case: Dog Soldiers.
