Rocking the Wide Targetman

So I am stuck in quarantine and can't really get out, doing a video is a bit hard as I need my full kit. So I thought I would do different things to keep my mind occupied.  My favourite role in FM21 is without a doubt the wide target man. 

I have several roles that I like the TQ, the inverted wingback and the inverted wingers are all good roles. There is an argument that the IWB should be up there as one of the best roles. However its really only good if you pair it up in a system and even then you can rely on it to unlock sides on its own.

The WTM is a lot more unique because of the way it moves. In the attachment you will see a formation without any of its roles assigned. Its intentional. If you can think of a WTM being a role that links up play, a role that drops deep then how can you get the best out of it.

When I created Galileo for FM21, this is a slightly safer version, the goal was simple. Control the flanks. Galileo works off a simple premise - if you can work the ball its way up the flanks and keep the ball, then you are going to create huge issues with the potential of at least 4 players attacking the final third.

I need you to think of the way you would link up the WTM in that system. The obvious clues are simple enough to read. They are the team instructions. Note the use of overlaps and focus play - that keeps things simple enough on the flanks. The overlap has the added bonus of making the TWO, yes two WTM have reduced mentalities.

So what do you think the other roles are?

Think of it like this. If the WTM can help link up play then it only makes sense we control the flanks and the centre. But how can you control the centre if you only really have one AM and one DM? Then how do you attack the space in the final third? What would the two attacking roles be? So if we are focusing play down each flank, there are some pretty obvious roles you have to pick as strikers, if the goal was to create space down opposite flanks.
