Is the Drill Doctor Actually Good?

Let's find out.

Is the Drill Doctor Actually Good?

Comments

Wes, The drill Dr does, work well. It requires a light touch. Aligning the bit in the chuck is important, misalignment will give asymmetrical results. After giving a light turn of the chuck in the sharpener back off pressure when grinding noise stops. If you continue to rotate and press you will hear a second brief grind. That is the bit getting mangled. After a few light slow passes check the bit. if it looks good you are done. I it needs more grinding then go through the chuck alignment process again, as the bit is now shorter, and repeat light sharpening passes.

My solutions aren't a fit for everyone. But for a few crazy people, it might be helpful.

I have never used a drill sharpening machine, so this is interesting. Probably won't spend money but you never know. Thank you, Wes. I hope you slept fast.

Naysayers say 'Nay! Nay!', but then a (experientially biased) voice enters the fray with a bit of reasoned dialogue backed with evidence. And even then, he tells us to "engage your own brain". Well done, Wes. [edited 'cuz my pinky is in love with the 'Enter' key]

I share your thoughts and feelings about the drill doctor. I purchased one years ago and basically had the same experience as you. Been sitting on the shelf ever since. I guess when I'm gone my boys can figure out what to do with it... Great video. At least I know now that it just wasn't me not being able to get that paperweight to work.

I wrote off the drill doctor ever since I watched a welder youtuber, ChuckE2009 , throw his in the trash and declare if its a bit big enough to sharpen on the grinder, good, small bits just toss and buy new. That was enough for me not to buy one. Think that guy got cancelled for being a white nationalist or something. Anyway, great vid as always. Sucks the last vid didn't do well. It was right in my wheelhouse.

Trevor Saxon

Yeah, it's not even a fair fight.

Neither do I.

They're basically just like AliExpress or BangGood, but with a basic supply infrastructure in the US. They don't make anything, and I don't know how they handle warranties. I'm sure a lot of their stuff is junk, but there are some gems.

Watch Wes Work

Yeah but when you need an API call...

Excellent demonstration of the inept Drill Doctor, and bonus, you provided a superior alternative for those who must have a machine for every task. 👏🏻👏🏻❤️🔧

In my experience the Drill Doctor is either the Kevorkian or Mengele of tools.

John Goebel

I've been pretty impressed with their stuff and their prices. I got a small Vevor welder to keep in my truck, it's tiny but I've been incredibly impressed with it's welds, It can get good penetration on stuff it has no right being able to effectively weld, it weighs like 2 lb, runs off a small Honda gen set and it was dirt cheap.

Another great video Wes, I've never used a drill sharpener, but that vevoir one looks pretty slick. I love Barn Swallows and Dragonflies they're like little fighter jets and helicopters that eat mosquitoes.

Kowyn Hibbert (Warrior of the Rusty Wrench)

Ive used a drill doctor once, it did not work well, the whole negative cutting angle thing really is an unforgivable design failure.. I could forgive a lousy geometry issue that makes oversize holes or even tends to walk a little when starting, but a sharpener that makes bits that don't cut? no thanks. clearly if you have 200 bucks and a ton of dull bits you should buy the vevor. if you only have less than that then get a bench grinder (frankly anyone who does enough drilling to have dull bits probably already has one) , and I really don't see a use case for buying a drill doctor.

Greg

Was just talking to a buddy how Vevor has a tool for just about everything. And the conscious is their stuff isn’t half bad!

Nick Vogel

I think both videos were great, thanks Wes. I, err, didn’t think you could sharpen drill bits, I’d always presumed they were hardened or tipped, and once that was gone they were scrap. This is where being a software engineer gets you in life…

Tim Price

It's impossible to know. The Chinese companies just copy a western design, then they all copy each other.

Makes me feel better about spending over $150 on a chalkboard

Watch Wes Work

We all have that problem!

Watch Wes Work

I wonder who actually manufactures that vevor grinder. Vevor is a prototypical “white labeler”

I've been trying to remember where Drill Doctor cam out in Project Farm's review of sharpeners. A machinist's tool is a tool for a machinist.

Most of Texas is a "Three Crop" State. Markets determine which ones, but also how quickly they can be harvested, too. Cotton needs high, dry, heat for the best fibers, and everyone plants the "early boll" varieties. Winter Wheat is pretty common for the October to February span, as the stalks can be cut back into the soil after harvest.

CapnMac82

LOVED the intro with the chalk board drawings!!!!!!!! Made me laugh out loud. Your graphic skills are obvious. I encourage you to lean on them more! Superb video and now I know what tool to get!! Invaluable.

Doug Wray

Thank you for information. My kids were going to buy me a Drill Doctor, but now I can tell them to save their money.

Arnold Boyd

Thanks, Wes - good stuff!

Dr. Internet

That was a cool, informative watch. My conundrum, convincing myself that I don't need another specialty tool.

Keith Mezzina

I couldn't make the drill doctor work . I now it wasn't just me . Thanks Wes

Some can, some can't. It depends how the flute is shaped.

can a 118 be made into 135

Well done thanks Wes

Wes, I'm writing this before reading the other comments so I didn't get biased by them. I've had 2 Drill Doctors. The 1st was used in original box from a renovation job. It looked brand new and absolutely useless. It couldn't grind a 118° or 135°. The 2nd was a Father's Day present. I tried my best to .make it work. Nope the bits came out as bad or worse than they started. I had a entire toolbox 14"×6"×4" filled to overflowing with worn, dull, and chipped bits. It weighed around 20# (10kilos). I bought the Vevor drill sharpener and spent a week just sharpening bits, because after the 2-3 coming out better than factory, I wanted to get then all into the drill drawers. Thick web, thin web split point, 118°, 135°, it didn't matter, they came out good-great. The only bits that I couldn't do were spade bits, which is completely understandable. The Vevor isn't designed to sharpen those. A small triangular file, vise and patience. I haven't tried doing masonry bits, but I only have ~15 or so that need attention. Easier to buy a new one if I need one that I don't have.

John Lottes

Yes and yes!

I have used a chinese drill sharpener just like the Vevor but another brand for about 5 years now. I have a small machine shop, so i have sharpened thousands of drillbits on it. And its really good, its a heavy quality machine. I never used a drill doctor but it seems very light and plastic.

That's my categories too!

You'll like it.

If they work they work!

Watch Wes Work

Crazy to have a second crop. We're lucky to get one!

Watch Wes Work

It might as well be from another planet. The motor is much more powerful. The whole thing is metal. I haven't used it a whole lot, but I really like it.

Watch Wes Work

I hope I never do!

Watch Wes Work

On a very obscure point!

Watch Wes Work

Can't beat that!

Watch Wes Work

I did too. He's a very smart guy, and even he had issues with the Drill Doctor.

They would be fine for wood workers...

Watch Wes Work

Tricking people into learning something is pretty much my life goal!

Watch Wes Work

Me too. But you can spend $10,000+ on a drill sharpener. I don't think I could swing that!

Watch Wes Work

I was just joking. The video did much better than I expected!

Watch Wes Work

great discussion learned a lot

Hi Wes. Interesting comment on the original sharpening video, that nobody watched it. 108k views is not the highest number of views but that seems decent over the first week. I know I watched and enjoyed it and the comments said the same. I am wondering if, instead of relying on the YT algorithm to drive views, that the 1000 Patreon members here post some links on their other social media apps to attract attention to the channel on YT. May be interesting to see the result. Fellow Patriots, what are your thoughts? (Y/N?)

Marshall

I've been eyeing a drill doctor for a long time. BUT...back when I worked in a machine shop, I learned to sharpen bits by hand...so my bits fall into two categories now: bits too small to hand-sharpen that I just chuck...and larger bits I do by hand just good enough to get by.

Benjamin Hall

Thanks for time and effort, I learn something useful with every video.

Bill Scott

Wes, Thanks for taking the time to explain the defaults of the drill Dr. Being a DIYer the drilled would work ( but I'm a perfectionist) therefore…..I will be ordering the Vevor sharpener. Truly appreciated A patteon supporter

Archie

My Nephew bought me a drill doctor a long time ago. It sat in the box under my bench for a decade unopened. I'm a DIY guy but to the extreme. I admit, if my drill is shot, it usually gets cast into a box full of them, and I buy a new one. Having a pretty full box of dull bits collected over several years, I decided to break out the Drill Doctor. I sharpened every one of them. Not being a Wes, I have zero idea how good these bits are. Lol, I haven't tried any of them. They look OK to me but I suspect they suck. Not sure. Thanks for the information Wes. I love your content what ever it may be. God Bless.

Having just gotten back from Central Texas this week, the field and seed corn is in, and sorghum appears to be the common second crop this year. As this week was "in between," no straight pipe ag trucks on the highways--but the chickens were heading to market.

CapnMac82

That other machine looks like it was meant to be used by people used to precision in the thousandth, and not in the sixteenth or eighth. It seemed quieter on the bench, too.

CapnMac82

You have incredible humor and fantastic art skills. Please never stop making videos

Conner Wright

Your humor is on point 😂

Martin Pedersen

Love your video on this drill bit sharpener. I sent this to friends

Jay Geist

I tried the spit point function on mine once or twice and decided that was a terible waste. I mostly use it for 3/8 and under bits. Does ok. I only have one because I got it brand new out of the box for 20$ lol

Curtis Roberts

It's cool to see the opinion of an actual machinest on some of these hobby tool machines..I watch project farm to get a feel for what devices actually work.

K H

My drill doctor did a great job making bits shiny, but that was about all. They were good for about 1 or 2 uses. But then again, I'm notorious for buying cheap drills

Sammy Fender

This video pretty much confirms the subject matter of a Wes produced video isn't all that important. It's Wes's style that makes it worth watching. We all learned way too much about drill sharpening in the last two videos but I was happy to watch them cause Wes was doing it.

Doug Tinsman

They both use a CBN wheel, which is an abrasive bonded on a metal wheel. They do not have to be dressed, but they do wear out.

Watch Wes Work

That bulldozer looked more like it belongs at Diesel Creek!

Sue Rollinson

He briefly considered it. It costs so much to move those large machines.

Watch Wes Work

Love the drawing! Always wondered with the Drill Doctor, or the Vevor one, how the wheel is actually kept to standard. As you pointed out in the last video, dressing the wheel is essential to keep it usable. Sharpening thick web, split point quality drills, not ones for drilling butter or at best cheese, does the Dill Doctor wear out after the first few?

Andrew Burton

Is your dad trying to buy a bulldozer?

Sue Rollinson

It was a great video, very informative. Thanks for the follow up, I had never heard of the drill doctor, but now know I will never own one.

Craig D Renwick

Good demo. Much rather pay more for something that works.
