The Best Videos

Thanks for all the good feedback! I love reading through the suggestions.

Several people have asked what kind of videos I want to be making. The answer is the same as always, I want to make the kind of videos I want to watch. I like watching clever people figure out difficult problems without taking themselves or the situation too seriously.

It might be easier to make a list of video styles in my genre I don't like:

1) Machinist/maker videos where they have the skills and equipment to literally make anything, but all they make is little tools and attachments for their machines.

2) Science/tech videos designed to make engineering and science "exciting" by glossing over all the technical details and adding explosions or other gags. Mythbusters did a pretty good job in this regard.

3) Videos where the host does not know what he/she is doing and has no desire to learn or improve. I'm all for DIY and trying new things, but you need to have an open mind and desire to improve your skills.

4) Trying too hard to be funny. Boy that gets old fast.

5) Bloated videos that drag things out for run time. Brevity is the soul of wit. I have better things to do. This is certainly not a problem that is unique to YouTube.

It's very hard to find the sweet spot between entertainment, education, and mass appeal, and that target is always moving.

Just joined today (after your 2 part drill bit series). Just throwing out there the name if your channel is watching you work. It’s still a good one. My background is electrical/computer engineering and my full time city job offers me none of the opportunities guys like you have which I appreciate. I do truly appreciate your humor and sarcasm, but what keeps me around I’d think the most is how you’ve got a fairly decent academic understanding and mindset with a practical side of just getting stuff done. Thanks Wes

Steven Wells

I don't know how he handles buying all that stuff and never selling anything.

Great minds think alike ;)

Wes, as for many others as well, yours is my favorite channel. Your dry wit, sarcasm and lack of fear of saying something that might p!ss someone off matches my own, and it's good to know there's at least one more like me out there. I have not idea what makes the YouTube machine work, and while the longer the better/low content videos will likely irate your OCD, I have a fast forward button and will can guide myself through it. I like it all. Even the boring stuff, because for you, you may well do it blindfolded, but for a lot of us that have cut our teeth on your videos, there's valuable stuff to be gained. Thanks Wes, along with the entertainment, I think you've helped a lot more of us than you can imagine.

What you’re interested in is exactly what I’m interested in. Your channel also falls into the category of interesting content and interesting person. I’m here for both, and that’s what elevates your videos to a higher tier for me.

my mistake

Dont worry to much about the content. It would be fun to se some work done on the Hurco CNC mill. I would not mind at all if the videos were a little longer. You are the most interresting Youtube creator allready, so no need to change.

tommy bengtsson

"Aging Wheels" Robert Dunn had a "Unscripted and casual" series which were basically just hanging out together while doing stuff in the shop videos, with low video production effort. Maybe an idea for every other video or the second channel? I don't know, just an idea.

thedeafguitarist

To my eyes he is an example of tailoring content to the whims of YouTube algorithms. As a result I’ve gone from watching every second to skipping through his videos.

John Fowler

He makes his money from YouTube, no matter what he wants people to think.

always watch your content also Diesel Creek makes his money from flipping honest type not craiglist rebuild

Hello Wes. I found your channel during the first forest robot video. After watching this one video, I started watching all of your videos. After seeing probably all of them, I became a Patron. You have an extraordinary talent, a great personality with a distance to yourself and a head full of knowledge. I like watching you because you are natural, you don't have to change anything because you already have a great formula. Hang in there, do your thing and we'll watch everything you put out. Greetings from Poland

Krzysztof Smolec

Hey Wes. Other than, maybe, one, possibly two videos (and those are ones I've just liked) I've loved all your stuff. Heck, I really enjoyed the deer summer sausage and squirrel stuffed peppers on WWwingit....I could watch a WWW video of you watching paint dry as long as your dry wit and a hand drawn diagram explaining the process was included: plus a Mrs. Wes cameo in the same vein of Mrs. O. Perhaps if you could flex your muscle of machining and welding on repairing parts in a similar manner as to those demonstrated in videos similar shown by the PK Mechanical Solution or PK Process...nothing to get you in trouble with the DOT....

Curtis Coon

I really want you to continue to be you - not what you think the YouTube algorithm needs. Getting a problem vehicle, and diagnosing is the heart of what I like from your videos. Talking thru your thought process and using your background training and skills to fix things are at the heart of it.

Gene Balcomb

I think I joined you during lock-down. I'll enjoy anything you'd like to film. I left Michigan 21 years ago and love hearing your midwestern commentary. I once owned a '78 Volkswagen Diesel Rabbit. As a truck driver at the time, couldn't get over its 4000rpm engine speed at 70mph. Thank you for sharing your dream.

Russell Middleton

Quite the conundrum, to be thoughtful, honest and want to keep it real. Prevailing wisdom from sages over time seems to be keep it real and do what you are passionate about. I feel ya.

Matthew Thompson

The millennial vs the carburator is still one I watch over and over and chuckle through it every time. I went through the exact experience when I got my 78 f-150 a few years ago, it actually took me a yr and a half to get it to work properly. I felt for you, I knew the frustration.

Hahah

I prefer it when you make customer work where somebody pays for 'real' work or when you make or buy sth that will make customer work more efficient i.e. the new office. I didn't like the rabbit videos for example, that I watched only 3 times instead of 7-8 times as usual...lol.I live for the day the yard will be empty from unfinished personal projects.Just my feedback. Also it's not a big deal when you skip a week, whenever and as many times you want to.My congratulations again for your struggle up to now.

boubaros

You are now obviously challenged with making a parody video with all these elements.

Jeff Richardson

I enjoy all of your videos. I like the mix. I stopped watching a lot of YouTubers. However you and Curtis from CEE I will always watch.

Christopher

I watch WES work! You're my #1 favorite! You know why? You! Your personality! Quit trying to find the 'right' formula or product. Sell the product that got you here. YOU!

Sammy Fender

So the question is. Do you want to make videos you like or feed the algorithm for the sake of the channel?

Anthony deFreitas

My wife and I are owners of a Chihuahua-Yorkie mix. She won't lie in her nice little "condo" but insists to rest on my lap. On the other hand, she enjoys the meal my better half gives her.

Jeffry Blackmon

100% accurate...I thought they were a high energy breed? Mine didn't get the memo 😂

Thomas Kyle Scarborough

Max likes the shop unless mom is home, then he'd 100X rather sit on the couch with her.

Good: CEE Inheritance Machining Vanover Customs (Old) This Old Tony Blondihacks TPAI Etc. Not Good: Large bald shill machinist in FL Artisan Makes Topper Machine shop

James Riordan

As I have said before if you don't enjoy making the video, I won't enjoy watching it. Take a leaf from the Low Buck Garage notebook, when the fun stops, stop.

Tim Allan

Honesty, I will watch you regardless of the content and pay you with this subscription. You seem to have some sort of imposter syndrome which is absolutely crazy since you're so talented. I think you're asking the wrong questions... I want you to make videos that make YOU happy and want. It weirdly translates in your tone in the video and motivates me to learn more. At this point. I just want to see you happy and successful. Much Love! ❤️ 💙 💜

Nima Ostadkar

Same here about the humor I like his dry sense of humor.

Eric Corse

One thing I love about your videos is the fact that you do dive into the weeds when necessary and you genuinely show your process as you work through things. Alot of YouTubers get caught up in being perfect and all you see is the polished finish product. If that means it's a longer video that's fine with me, I love the long form content. Short videos just feel like tease! Lol Ps....I had never seen another GSP that looked even remotely close to ours until I saw Max on your videos! Lol except mines a chicken and would never come out in the shop with me 😂

Thomas Kyle Scarborough

Your humor is 50% of why I watch you and the 50% is the things you fix is a little bit out of the ordinary. I really loved the Forrest machine and hope your not finished with it. Orr go more down the road of weirder machines 🤩

Martin Pedersen

I will add one more personal preference. I like videos 20 minutes or shorter. I often have time to consume a video of this Length. If they are much longer I need to schedule time to watch and often don't.

Dale Marthaller

This could be my list.

Steve Walker

I have the same set of dislike. I don't think your videos fall foul of them at all and would just like more of same, tight, interesting and authentic. Regarding length, I've stopped watching some channels I really liked, because I cant bring myself to commit to 1+ hrs theyre putting out now. I watch too much youtube as it is, and a lot of those ones are very thinned out gruel indeed.

Martin McNickle

I like to watch videos where problem solving is involved. This can be troubleshooting, fighting back against the power of time or mother nature, or reverse engineering a mechanical contraption. Additionally I love watching highly intelligent people tackle these problem. So for me the vast majority of the videos you create fit the bill exactly. I follow about a dozen channels but I'm only a patreon of your channel. Just do what you enjoy doing and we will come along for the ride.

Dale Marthaller

Wes...I liked your choices. Especially #4... 4) Trying too hard to be funny. Boy that gets old fast. Not to throw anyone under-the-bus, but unfortunately I'm having a hard time watching VGG just because of this one. Derek used to be funny being Derek...now he's trying hard to be funny beyond just being Derek, which is making him hard to watch now. I hope he sees this and does some introspection. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Doug McCusker

Nice self inventory. How the host truly feels about the content comes across and influences the quality of the end product.

Michael Belt

Reading through what you don't like shows you have a pretty good handle on what makes a good video. I like watching your videos because you are a true mechanic and not just a parts changer like so many others. Of course the reason is that for a lot of the work brought to you there are no readily available parts! Which means like in the old days you fix what you have. We all needed to be a little McGiver but what we repaired worked and many times left the shop in better shape than the original. You always have a good mix of projects and I always find you interesting. 👍👍

Robert Gibbons

It's easy for me to say just keep doing what your doing, but that is why I watch. I like the variety of things you work on and the length is good for me. If you change to much trying to please the algorithm you may lose the chemistry that makes your channel great. At the same time, I know it's a lot of work and commitment. I like the weekly videos but maybe every two weeks allows you to keep the quality but not lose your sanity?

Curtis Roberts

As long you're making videos to that standard, you'll have viewers. As they say, "Real recognize real"

Martin lewis

I’d watch them all! Yours, loyal viewer.🤓
