Dev Notes: SVGA 3D issues

tldr: some tech info for VmWare users. If you're a regular player, there's nothing interesting for you.


Hi guys. I can confirm there's a strange "infinite loop" loading issue that happens under certain circumstances:

1. You're using VmWare Workstation.

(and) 2. you're using Windows 10 as guest VM.

(and) 3. you have no GPU-passthrough enabled.

(and) 4. you're trying to apply some specific PoE modifications.


There're no issues if you use real GPU. It looks like VmWare SVGA 3D adapter doesn't have some required capabilities for new "optimizations" that GGG have added in 3.14.1.6.3 patch but I'm not sure because "infinite loop" is a very old and common PoE bug: https://i.imgur.com/b46oleD.png . So maybe it will be fixed soon.


There're no issues playing on Windows 7 at all. It was a surprise for me to know a lot of people use Win10 as guest systems with all these user32.GetCurrentInputMessageSource()-kind functions, increased resource requirements, mass built-in telemetry, continual unstable updates & "optimizations" and other MS [s]services[/s] malwares. Well, now we have one more issue with this OS.


/edit (21-05-28): Ok, we have more questions than answers. Right now we know it's not possible to play PoE with VmWare+Svga3d+Win10 setup.

Win7 still works fine.
