Okay, post-watch addendum just because the coincidence of Mike sharing his story of playing 7th Edition in Germany of all places (where I grew up) and my name scrolling by at the same time is compelling me: in German, they chose to translate the creature type 'drake' as 'scaeda', a term which I never encountered anywhere before or since. It seemingly comes from a term used in Beowulf. If you do end up making that video about language and Magic I’d be thrilled to hear about more neat little quirks like that from across the globe as well.

Seeing that old 7th Edition game box again and remembering how it was the beginning of playing the game for my brother and I as well made me consider how much this little game had shaped who I am today as well. When I started just around the time Onslaught block was wrapping up I knew nothing about the sets that had come before, and we’d pick up hints and clues from assorted cards acquired from collections older kids were already selling on. Picking up Magic just around the time I was first learning English in school as well I’d soon end up knowing what a 'sorcery' was before learning words like 'hubcap' or 'refrigerator', making fast progress owing to having a collection made up of both English cards and those in my native language. To a young mind, this kind of game held so many mysteries and intriguing threads to follow, and it’s wonderful revisiting my own formative period with it now in this video. Thank you for choosing to make a video on this, Sam :)

The comic from the 7th edition starter is one of the most lasting impressions I have from this product. It was certainly a product of its time, with 4th wall breaks, and quippy host with center part and goatee. The cards coming to life after playing them helped cement that our imagination while gathering was the magic, and sticks in my brain after all these years. I can still see my opponent getting strangled by tentacles when I attack with giant octopus. Later the Magic Managa, Destroy all humans, would pick up on this same language, while also building off of years of japanese media like Yugioh playing in the space of a card game come to life. I’m very glad to see this video as a love letter to Donatos work showcased in 7th, especially now amidst his exit from working for magic. To get to appreciate it devoid of controversy keeps this timeless, and as something to look back on when we miss his work that defined a generation of the game. I’m inspired to attempt a commander deck with only hands/first person prospective in the art based on this. As a game store thats survived and grown off of $5-10 sol rings, was glad to see you glimpse into the tremors that shook up the reserved list that all started from the small rumblings of new card art. Lastly, I’ll take no personal offense to going through a whole 40 minute video of Seventh Edition with ZERO reference to Storm Crow, but i’m sure thats a whole video for another time to look forward to. Amazing video as always, best to you and your family, Sam
