MurMur Changes

Hello everyone!

First, if you missed previous posts, here are the links on that matter:

About rework - https://www.patreon.com/posts/64160075

Poll about changes - https://www.patreon.com/posts/64387028

The poll ended with 321 overall votes, of which 68.2% are for the change, and 31.8% against it. Thank you to those who participated.

It was a hard decision to make, but I agree with the majority's choice.

WHY THE GAME IS CHANGING

Until 0.6 update, MurMur had a render almost per each line of text. And while I love how the game looks with this. The purpose of which this feature serves is not worth it's many downsides. Most important of them is how long it takes for me to render so many renders. And to be honest, it's not very fun to render each emotion for each line. I can't say if I burned myself on it. But I'm getting frustrated just thinking that I need to render about 2000-3000 images per update. And I don't want this work to become something I wouldn't want to finish.

And yes, it's me who set this bar for myself, so I guess I became a victim of my ambitions. I want to avoid making updates smaller because it would make them unpleasantly short, and I also don't want the game to feel entirely different.

Lastly, I know that people come and go, everyone has their own lives. But it's sad for me to see that most players just forget about the game existing while I work on such long updates.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The ratio of renders per line of text will be reduced by three or slightly more times in a whole game. This will remove the need for such numerous renders in the future updates. But will somewhat keep lifelike feel of the game. And I think that this will give me more joy in my work, allowing me to not just focus on emotions, but also on poses, light, framing and other things more while I'm at it.

In this update, in addition to remaking renders from the first parts of the game, I want to bring other new features to make the game feel more alive and engaging. For example: sounds, new in-game notifications, save naming and other things to make the game friendlier for the players. If you have other suggestions, please leave them in the comments, in my discord server or just DM me.

I've read all of your comments on this matter. Thank you everyone for being so supportive. If you still have questions, feel free to ask me. And I hope that even those who liked a high number of renders in MurMur will be able to enjoy the new state of the game.

All it does is increase the readability of the text. The outline font puts a small border around the text, ie a black outline round white text. The high readability option sets the text to be white on a black background, less attractive, but undeniably effective. Anyway, thanks for considering it.

Can't say that this will be implemented for sure, but I'll see if it fits to the game.

Devil'sDad

I'm looking for best ways to implement it ;)

I read on Android and I have to say that the issue of text readability is one that is quite important to me. As such I would suggest looking at some of the ports estrada777 makes and how they often offer both an outline font option and a high readability option. The outline font is a more elegant solution, but there is no denying that the high readability option is also effective. Both allow even an older reader like me to turn off the text box completely and see much more of the renders. I dont know how hard it is to implement, but I wish more devs added these options to their games.

I find the best solution is to have an empty input field on the save page so it just uses the default when you leave it empty, but keeps what's currently in the input so you don't have to type your names every time you make a save. Reset on restart of course.

I thought that some people wouldn't need it, so it will be toggleable yes, and thank you for the kind words

Devil'sDad

I rarely see save naming talked about much. I think it's a good idea, however there are people (like myself) who don't use it in games that do have it and find the extra clicks annoying. I only ask that if you add it, you should also add the ability to toggle it on or off in the settings please. Thanks for all the awesome content and keep up the good work DD. 🙂
