BONUS: Even Jesus Had a Girlfriend w/ Henry J. Wallis

In Part II, Henry discusses the New International article Erasing the Pregnant as a way into talking about religious politics and secularism in regards to issues like abortion, death with dignity, Zionism, and sex.

My onpopular opinion is Henry stimulates great lines of thinking and discussion. The previous ep. with him talking about France Unbowed and the strategic difference between that movement and the DSA was among my favorite in a long time.

We need an Alex Jones but for the left

Was not expect this. Not for me. He lost me right away with the pro life stuff. I'm not against christians but this is so hugely discrediting for me.

Harper

Archons in the comments. Henry gets it.

WHOA this one went off the rails.

Heather Lynn

When he admitted to believing in satan, I almost turned off the show.

52:27 Anyone who considers sexuality a “weakness” is a reactionary misanthrope. Communism is the irruption of proletarian desire. This is non-negotiable.

Henry now one of the more divisive guests on the show lol

Cole

Henry is a fucking loser lol

The conversation got close to it at one point, but never explicitly stated the queerphobic foundation of the Christian view of sex and sexuality, which should invalidate the whole project. Someone raised in this stuff can hear the dog whistles, but for anyone who can't, even the most "progressive" Christians believe that heterosexual couples get to marry and have sex, and everyone else has to be ascetic or their eternal soul will be agonizingly tortured forever. And that's the absolute best version of it you're going to get from anyone in that religion who actually engages with the text. For a while there—unironically thanks to years of annoying epic internet atheism—it was at least gauche for Christians to admit to some of the more plainly retrograde views the Bible espouses about women, homosexuality, etc., but now for some reason we have to let these people back in because they preach the same trash a little more nicely? Quick edit: some folks in the Christian faith will try to say that the Bible never actually says X/Y/Z is a sin, or twist themselves into mild acceptance by adopting some more lenient stance on what is meant by repentance, but those interpretations were not popular among the biblical scholars back when I was struggling with this stuff (though maybe that's changed since I left the faith). Lots of it just strikes me as a coping mechanism from people who are unable to resolve the ethical contradictions but still want to be taken seriously in polite society.

What a ride

Actually having listened fully I think Henry was pretty reasonable throughout, much love to Andy but he was pretty hyperbolic himself/joking around so Henry responded well I think. Again big fan of the show no hate

Cole

If you take Marxism to be your entire worldview then it’s a bit incongruous but historically and up to the present day there is no real hang up between religious belief and the practice of bringing socialism about in your community’s life and the political sphere. It’s not like a mistake or strange coincidence that there have been so many religiously inspired socialists and communists over the past 200 years

Cole

I stick by not liking his demeanor and style of argumentation but I can concede that I’d still call the guy a comrade and that I probably have sticking points on religious topics (raised a pastors son) I felt a lot of obvious contradictions between religious belief and political practice that I think you were poking at that can’t really be reconciled…

Josh Ruston

that's not how i felt about the discussion at all. henry's thoughtful and a friend

The Antifada

Man… Im not usually one to say this kind of thing but Henry sucks… his argumentative style is obnoxious and unnecesarily combative… Andy was punching holes and my guy was just dancing around them by utilizing a hostile tone and hyperbolic counter questioning

Josh Ruston

youre right though

The Antifada

i read most of it, and the parts i didnt read were irrelevant to the discussion

The Antifada

Andy, mate, if you're going to launch into a critique of an article you HAVE to read it first

Jim

Hold up. So the body without organs was originally Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden?

I'm a Sentient Lichen - and so can YOU!!
