I'm very excited to say that I've had a video essay published in Monstrum, a peer-reviewed journal of horror studies. The essay, "We’re All Scrolling Through the World’s Fair", is about We're All Going to the World's Fair, the first film by Jane Schoenbrun, who also directed I Saw the TV Glow. This entire issue consists of video essays exploring queer horror. I'm traveling at the moment but I'm looking forward to watching the other essays soon.
The academic video essay world is kind of different from YouTube. Unlike my YouTube videos, this essay doesn't have any voice-over, although it does have a brief my-face jumpscare. But the main thing is, I coded a Twitter clone and filled it with a bunch of fake tweets about being queer, being a kid, identifying with horror narratives, and seeing weird things in the dark, along with several clips from the film. Twitter is kind of like an unintentional Soviet montage—seeing two things next to each other changes how you would interpret them individually. So hopefully this essay taps into that feeling of finding meaning in-between social media posts.
