The Internet Archive is holding a video remix contest centered around works that entered the public domain on January 1, 2024. I made this short video montage combining the American film The Cameraman (1928; dir. Buster Keaton & Edward Sedgwick) and the Soviet classic Man with a Movie Camera (1929; dir. Dziga Vertov). I also wrote a little song for the video.
You can check out all of the entries here but here are a couple of interesting ones I've watched so far:
I've also spotted a couple that use AI-generated images, which probably raises some interesting questions about whether all AI-generated works belong in the public domain, and if not, who has the rights to licensing them. It appears that the current legal status in the US is that a work generated by AI cannot be copyrighted, which is probably for the best, but I'm curious to see if that might change over the coming years. or at least how skeezy AI bros will try to get around it.
While we're all here together, a quick update on YouTube: there should be a new video about Michael Mann's Manhunter out by the end of the month. If you are currently giving me $5 then your name will be in there too! wild!
