Give Into Us Chapter 17

As soon as they couldn’t hear Bella’s truck any longer, the two vampires left the house and headed towards the woods. As soon as they were under cover of the trees and safe from prying neighborly eyes and ears, the two faced each other. They knew what the other wanted to do and they also knew the risks involved.

So, who was in the right?

“If we stick as close to Bella as possible, on this side of the treaty, when something does happen to her we will be close enough to get in and out without the wolves being able to do much of anything.” Jane reasoned.

Jane wanted to stick to the border and the second her bond told her, her mate was in trouble, she would race to Bella to save her. Jane was positive her mate would be hurt by the shifters, it was really only a matter of time. They were much too young to not impulsively shift. Jane was just hopeful that when her mate was hurt, the wolves would be so ashamed they wouldn’t be near her when Jane would run to her rescue and risk one of them shifting too close to her again. It was the best Jane could do in her situation, she just had to be at the ready to run when she was needed.

“I think it would be better to get rid of Victoria now.” Heidi argued. The seductress felt so out of character. She was acting for too serious for her liking but she couldn’t be anything but with her mate’s safety at stake.

She knew if she were to get Victoria out of the picture, it would be one less thing for her mate to be stressed about and one less thing for them to worry about when her mate visited her friends or wasn’t with them at school or with her dad. It made sense to Heidi to get rid of the easiest threat to her mates happiness and that was Victoria. She was a big obstacle and while Heidi understood Jane’s point of view, she knew they weren’t about to change Bella’s mind about visiting her shifter friends anytime soon. The best they could do, instead of waiting around doing nothing while hopefully nothing happened to Bella on the reservation, Heidi wanted to actually be productive and destroy a threat to her mate. No matter how much it hurt her to do so.

Jane knew it was a good idea to kill Victoria, she was sure even her mate would agree and it seemed her mate was into saving everyone who had ever done anything wrong to her. But Jane couldn’t make herself get farther away from her mate only to end up being too far to actually be of any help when the shifters inevitably hurt her.

“So, you want to go gallivanting around in Seattle when our mate could very well be seriously injured around those mutts?” Jane had no qualms calling those shifters what she really thought about them; at least when she wasn’t around Bella.

“I’m not going there to have a night out on the town with Victoria, I’m going there to kill her.” Heidi said, greatly offended that Jane would assume such a thing about her. She knew the blonde was only speaking out of anger of the situation but Jane had a habit of biting people’s heads off and Heidi was tired of it. This time, she could fight back without fear of the blonde using her gift on her because she knew she was protected since she was Bella’s other mate. Heidi was confident Jane would never use her gift again on someone Bella didn’t want her to and Heidi was second on that list behind Bella herself.

“Can you?” Jane asked with a sneer. She was more than aware of Heidi’s past with the redhead and that the former coven members used to be very close. At least they were until Heidi’s coven was disbanded and Heidi joined the Volturi. “I don’t think you actually could. If you were able to, why wait until now to do something about Victoria? I will admit you are the best person to go after Victoria since you would know how to avoid her gift the best, but why do you want to go now all of a sudden?” Jane questioned, mostly just to get a rise out of the women and to let off some anger she had about being separate from Bella.

Heidi had to fight back a growl at the assumption that she wouldn’t be able to protect her mate from a very real threat. Truthfully, Victoria stopped being her friend when the redhead acted the way she did when their coven was disbanded; long before she was mated to James and became even more sadistic. As far as Heidi was concerned, the Victoria she was best friends with and the Victoria who lived now, were two very different people. The Victoria Heidi knew was long dead. Heidi would have no problems killing the redhead. The Victoria she was close to had been dead for centuries already.

“I’m going to kill Victoria and destroy the biggest threat our mate has and the entire time I’m doing my job, protecting our mate, you’ll be standing here looking like an idiot waiting for something that may very well never happen.” Heidi honestly didn’t have faith that the wolves wouldn’t hurt Bella but she figured they wouldn’t be stupid enough to do anything the first time Bella goes to visit them. She figured they would be on their best possible behavior so she and Jane wouldn’t be able to try and start a war with them so soon.

Jane growled at the insult and growled louder with her assumption that Jane wouldn’t be doing anything. It was like Heidi was insinuating she wasn’t capable of protecting their mate, like Jane wasn’t ableto protect their mate! The audacity of the woman to stand there and say Jane wasn’t doing anything to keep their mate safe! Jane would be there when Bella is attacked and in harms way and where will Heidi be? In another city, miles away and of absolutely no real help!

“You better watch yourself.” Jane warned in a gravely voice, letting Heidi know just how close Jane was to getting royally pissed off at the woman. Jane may not be willing to use her gift on the other vampire, but there were other things she could do. If Heidi didn’t watch herself, Jane may not be able to stop herself from proving to Heidi just how capable she was of protecting Bella; even if she was protecting her from Heidi.

“Watch myself?” Heidi asked incredulously, biting back a snarky remark she knew would set Jane off sooner rather than later. “From what? You’re just standing there watching the clouds roll by while I’m going to actually be doing something. I think you’ll be doing more than enough ‘watching’ for the both of us.” Well, Heidi tried to hold back all her snarky remarks but she wouldn’t be Heidi if she didn’t tease/make fun of the woman when it wasn’t the best time to do so.

Jane grit her teeth, counted to hundred as fast as she could in her head, multiple times and in several different languages. But the smirk Heidi had on her fact was too much for Jane to be able to completely let go.

Jane lunged at Heidi, pushing the taller woman into a tree, nearly causing the tree to snap from the force. Jane snarled at the woman, hands grasping Heidi’s shoulders, fingers dangerously digging into the woman’s shoulders. Heidi growled in response, only using her hands to brace herself against the tree, waiting to see what exactly Jane planned to do before attempting either her gift or her hands to make Jane let go of her.

“Don’t think you’re better than me.” Jane finally said, just barely managing to not do some very serious damage to the woman. If it wasn’t for the fact she knew Bella would be upset with her in some way or another for hurting Heidi, Jane would have already either physically hurt the woman or have used her gift on her. Probably both if she were to be honest to herself.

Before Heidi could respond, Jane shoved Heidi hard enough to push the woman through the tree and then bolted out of the area in the direction of what she was originally heading. She didn’t care what Heidi thought, her fear of Bella being hurt and not be able to be there for her was too great to even entertain the idea Heidi might be right. Because as much as Jane had argued against it, she knew the other woman was right. Taking out Victoria would be the smartest thing to do and with Heidi, it was a guaranteed win. She just couldn’t admit that the other was right, she couldn’t get her fear under enough control to even in a super round-about and convoluted way say Heidi was right. Jane couldn’t take the ego hit and her vampire self couldn’t let go of the fact her mate could likely get hurt with her chosen company; so she would do what would give her the most instant relief, she would stand guard over her mate from as close as she dared to get.

“You owe me a new shirt!” Heidi yelled as she felt her shirt was likely ruined from the tree bark. Oh well, she would just steal one of Bella’s shirts later when she would tell her mate of the harrowing fight she was about to have with Victoria. She would just leave out the fact that Heidi’s gift actually made Victoria’s gift mute because Heidi’s gift was able to trick Victoria’s gift as well as Victoria’s mind. It would be an easy fight if not a bit emotionally draining.

At least Heidi would be able to look forward to asking her mate for a kiss for being her knight in shining armor by destroying the vampire that was hunting her down. Surely, she could get a few kisses in thanks for that. If she could get Bella to do so while she was in the shower washing the tree bark and other possible fight residue off her, even better. That would definitely show Jane she should have kept her mouth shut and let her ego take a hit or two.
