One Shot- Bella/Kate

Bella had been feeling off for a few days. It wasn’t anything more than her recent lack of sleep couldn’t explain. It was final’s time and as soon as she finished the one she was currently doing, she would be done with finals and would be able to finally get her degree. Getting this degree was the last thing she wanted to do before being turned. It helped that getting the degree not only gave her a chance to do something in her free time but it also gave her a chance to get closer in age to Kate. She was given lenience from the Volturi leaders to wait on being turned until she was closer in age to her mate. It also helped that Marcus and Didyme were found to be her bonded parents and when both of the other kings were afraid to piss off Marcus and get on his bad, she ended up getting what she wanted.

Bella would never admit it, but she was very thankful for the Cullen’s interference in her life. It was because of their making her love them and then them abandoning her, and then Alice begging her to help save Edward. Bella hadn’t hesitated in wanting to help, but for all the wrong reasons. When she walked into the throne room, her entire life changed. Looking at Marcus, she felt like she had come home. And then when Didyme burst through the doors from a summons Bella hadn’t heard, Bella couldn’t imagine going back to Forks.

After a long and drawn out, and entirely too dramatic thanks to Didyme and Sulpicia and their flare of the dramatics, plan of getting ‘killed’ in Italy from her impromptu trip worked perfectly. Bella had been sad to do that to Charlie, but honestly, as great of a dad as he had potential to be, the truth was she had never grown that close to him. She probably could have, likely as soon as she got back from Italy they would have bonded more. But it wasn’t meant to be and Bella couldn’t be happier for it.

Barely a year after I was first ‘adopted’ into the Volturi family, Bella decided since her parents wanted her to grow a little more before being changed, she wanted to go to school. At least for a little while. Bella wanted to get just one degree before Didyme bites her to turn her into a vampire. It was the last thing Bella wanted to do before she wasn’t human any longer. Bella wanted to see what all the hype was about with pulling all nights, stressing over final exams and research papers and everything else involved with being in college.

In her freshman year at Anchorage University, Bella met the Denali’s. Well, she met Kate. Because of who Bella was in the vampire world, thanks to her parents, Bella had Jane, Felix and Demetri with her as guards. Once the guards learned about Kate being in town, they steered Bella away from her. The guards job while Bella was in school was to protect the human and to keep other vampires away from her. They hadn’t anticipated Kate being Bella’s mate.

Through Kate’s stalkerish tendencies and her pure puppy excitability, it was only a matter of time before Kate was able to slip into one of Bella’s classes and profess her love for the brunette. Then it only took a few weeks for Bella to stop giving Kate a hard time about her sudden declaration and for the guards to stop glaring at the woman and making threats. After their disastrous meeting, the pair eventually fell into a pattern of just always being around each other and causing Bella’s guard’s and Kate’s family headaches. Bella and Kate were a pair of trouble maker’s that seemed to only feed into each other and make their antics worse than originally planned.

So on Bella’s last day of finals that would end her human college career, she had made grand plans with her girlfriend about how to celebrate. Bella and Kate were to go out and both of them were going to hit the wildlife, see if there were any glaciers for Kate and try and get Bella to stand on, find wildlife that normally Bella wouldn’t be able to close up view of but with Kate there they could until the animal decided Kate was too dangerous to be around. They were planning on having plan fun in the wild with Bella’s human eyes and abilities to get a few random things crossed off on her human bucket list before ending the night at the Denali cabin bonding with the family. It was going to be an amazing time.

At least, that was the plan before Bella woke up that morning feeling like shit. Thankfully, since Bella had A’s in the classes and could afford to fail her final’s and still graduate, she decided to just not show up. She wasn’t depending on her grades to do anything after graduating, she just wanted a diploma as a human. So, when her alarm went off for her to get ready for class, so turned off her phone and buried herself under the blankets and fell back asleep. She didn’t even think about the vampires that were waiting for her to go to class, how well memorized her routine was and that everyone was waiting on her.

When she eventually heard pounding on her door, Bella groaned in annoyance. She knew it had to be one of the vampires she hung out with, but she didn’t want to socialize. She didn’t have the energy for it.

“Go away.” Bella said as she buried herself deeper into her blankets to try and block out the pounding and try to go back to sleep.

In what felt like seconds later, Bella heard her door being unlocked and was briefly annoyed the person, or vampire, didn’t use the key in the first place and had opted to bang on the door. In less than a second, she felt a weight on her bed, pulling her to the side.

“Hey babe, what’s wrong?” She heard Kate asked and thankfully answered her silent questions. It was probably on of her guards that banged on her door and when she didn’t answer, they got Kate, whom Bella had given a key to her apartment and made sure her guards didn’t have to try and keep her privacy, to go into her apartment to check on her.

Bella immediately turned into her mate and did her best to melt into her. There was nothing as nice as cuddling with Kate and thankfully, her mate seemed to love to cuddle as much as she did. Bella didn’t bother to answer Kate, she just wanted to sleep whatever bug she had off.

Kate felt, heard and saw her mate go back to sleep and Kate couldn’t help but have a panic attack. She had no idea what was wrong with her mate. She could tell her mate was sick, but what was the illness? Was it a cold? Was it the flu? Was it tuberculosis? Was it appendicitis? Could it be the first signs of cancer?

Kate had never bothered to go to school like her cousins did to learn all these things that ail humans. She had never had a reason to. But at that moment, staring at her mate that seemed to be harboring a fever, she regrated her lack of foresight. Shouldn’t Alice have been able to warn her of this impending tragedy of her mate needing medical attention and Kate not being able to do anything?

Kate hugged her mate to her as she called her sister. She didn’t even give Tanya a chance to say anything before giving her orders.

“I need every cold remedy you can think of. This is not a drill Tanya, Bella needs anything and everything we can get.” Kate ordered and then quickly hung up as she heard her mate’s guards walk into the apartment. Kate had purposefully left the door unlocked, not because she was so concerned and focused on getting to her mate that she had forgotten to lock, but because she knew her mate’s guards would want to know what was going on.

“Have you called Mistress Didyme? She is Bella’s mother, she would know what to do.” Jane asked with a stoic and pensive look. She supposed she could have mentioned to Kate that before Bella had moved from Italy, the human had fallen ill there.

Jane vividly recalled both Mistress Didyme and Master Marcus panicking themselves when Bella had been sick, thankfully the human was still awake enough to talk her parents through how humans could fall ill every so often. Bella also explained what was needed for her to get better and what to look out for in case she got worse. Jane had been given all that information once again before she followed Bella to Alaska for the human to attend school.

Jane would allow Kate and her sisters to panic for just a little longer. She could easily tell Bella would be fine with fluids and sleep, perhaps some over the counter medication may help her feel better sooner, but since Tanya was apparently already working on it and that was just as well.

“No, do you think I should?” Kate asked with just a slightly panicked look. “Would they be pissed that I allowed their daughter to get hurt? Shit, would they ban me from Volterra for not taking care of their daughter properly?”

Jane allowed the other blonde to have her panic attack. She would explain everything when the coven leader showed up with the medication. Once the older Denali was there, Jane would explain there was nothing to worry about. But for the time being, Jane would allow Kate to panic.

Perhaps in the future Kate would do well to remember not to hide her cloak when Jane was set to go on a hunt. Jane was tired of Kate’s, really both Kate’s and Bella’s but Jane would only ever blame Kate, antics and tendency to pull of pranks. Perhaps this panic would be a wake up call for the Denali to take life more seriously; especially since she was mate to the Volturi Princess. If she didn’t, well, Jane wasn’t above doing something else to cause Kate to panic and perhaps learn something in the future if needed.
