Give Into Us Chapter 14

The wolves were keeping a very close eye on all the vampires. While the elders had wanted the wolves to fight and to get rid of all the very real threats to their people, Sam knew better. The alpha knew his pack wasn’t prepared to take on the vampires that were there, much less the vampires that would come over if the threat Heidi gave was real. Sam did take advantage of the Cullen’s side of the treaty line being opened to his pack though. He had his wolves practically breathing down the vampires’ necks. If they made even one wrong move, he would know and they would act. Even if it cost him wolves, they would do what they needed to in order to protect the people of their tribe that couldn’t protect themselves from these vampires.

The vampires, at least the Volturi, were more than a little annoyed by the invasion of privacy. While they were used to not having any privacy while living with not only vampires but vampires with gifts, their queen was known to touch people because of how nosy she was, but they didn’t like the wolves watching them from the shadows. Normally, in the days of olde, they would just kill the whole pack and be done with it. But they couldn’t do that anymore with all the new technology the humans have. It was too annoying to hide their tracks and to not draw unwanted attention since news could travel so quickly these days. They also had to be on their best behavior with where they hunted and who they hunted. Carlisle had suggested to try and hunt humans that didn’t seem to have any connections to others, like the homeless, so not only would there be less police involvement but the wolves wouldn’t take as much notice to where they were hunting. They didn’t care what the wolves thought who they hunted, they just wanted to make sure a wolf wasn’t near enough when they did hunt and risk their inner vampire retaliating against the wolf to protect their prey. It was a natural instinct all the Volturi had very good control over, but the queens didn’t want to take any risks.

Thankfully, unlike the animal drinkers, they didn’t need to hunt nearly as often as the Cullen’s needed to. So Heidi and Jane were able to stay near their mate that much more. They were very reluctant to leave their mates’ side when she went to school. They stayed in the tree line, hidden behind a tree in case any bored student decided to study the tree line instead of their course work. They were more than able to listen closely enough to hear their mate to make sure she was safe.

Most of what they heard was the youngest Cullen trying her best to make up to their mate for her abandoning her. Jane was especially pleased that her human wasn’t going to make accepting Alice back into her life as easy as the little pixie vampire apparently thought it was going to be. Heidi had to restrain herself from making rude comments to the pixie to point out just how much the woman had screwed up but she didn’t think her mate would appreciate it, especially since it was clear Bella wanted to fix her relationship with the Cullen’s, no matter how hard she was finding it to be. Heidi and Jane were both hoping they would remain at an arm’s length with their mate; their mate was clearly having trouble rebuilding the trust she had in them and it would be nice not to have any bunny muncher’s in the castle when they eventually returned. In the meantime, they were forced to put up with them for as long as Bella wanted to remain in Forks.

“Bella!” Alice shouted from across the hall full of students trying to make their way out of the building to go home.

Bella rolled her eyes but she really didn’t expect anything else from the smallest vampire. She said goodbye to her human friends and waited for the vampire to catch up to her. Thankfully it didn’t take long, even with all the bodies in the way because they all seemed to subconsciously get out of the way as Alice got closer to them.

“Want to come over today?” Alice asked with a wide smile, confident in her question. Although, Alice was always confident when she asked a question because she always knew the answer.

Bella wanted to say yes, in fact she almost did. But she was also still so very hurt by them being able to leave her so easily after something went wrong. They were nice enough to get rid of James for her, but beyond that, they seemed to want nothing more with her after they realized she would require help with the supernatural. It was like once they were truly faced with her immortality and weakness as a human, it was decided she was too much work to keep around.

Bella didn’t trust them to not leave her again. She was afraid that she would get as close as she used to be with them and as soon as she felt everything was okay again, they would leave. She didn’t want to feel the way she had when they first left again. They hadn’t been back for that long and Charlie still had her practically under house arrest to make up for worrying him so much and leaving the country without even so much as a heads up. It was as good of an excuse as any to give Alice to not go over.

“I can’t Alice.” Bella said as they started to walk towards the parking lot. “Charlie has me under lock and key. I’m pretty sure he would only barely let go to work if I hadn’t lost my job.” She was fighting the urge to beg Mike to get her job back, she was sure he would easily agree. But she didn’t want to work there again because she was sure the Mike’s parents wouldn’t trust her nearly as much as they used to. It likely wouldn’t be a comfortable place to work anymore and even if that was the only thing she could use at the moment to get out of the house, it wasn’t worth it.

Alice’s smile dropped, but not enough to be called frowning. It made Bella think that Alice had already known the answer but has still hoped for a different answer.

“That sucks.” Alice said, and for just a moment Bella actually felt bad. She used to always to hang out with Alice, not only to be closer to Edward, but because she genuinely liked Alice. She felt Alice was the exact type of sister she would want to have if she got to pick. Bella was about to offer to hang out as soon as she was allowed to, but the slight tilt of Alice’s head let her know she was listening to something humans couldn’t hear. After a few seconds of walking in silence, Alice finally gave her attention to their conversation. “It seems your mates need to talk with you.” Alice said with a worried look. “You should go home and they’ll meet you in your room.” Alice said before giving her a quick hug goodbye and skipped away towards her own car.

Bella watched as Alice skipped to her car, seemingly nonplussed about the ominous message she had just given. Bella felt her heart speed up in worry. She had no idea what could be so important that she would need to get sooner than the leisurely pace she normally went home. It wasn’t like she lived all that far away in first place, so to be told to rush home didn’t bode well. Once Bella was in her truck, she quickly left the school to go home; well, she left as quickly as the slow moving traffic would let her. She couldn’t get home fast enough, she needed to hear what the important news that made her vampire guards need her to get home quickly.
