Twilight One Shot

Bella looked across the field, assessing the real danger. All the Cullen’s were tense, apparently ready for anything to happen. Bella rolled her eyes, she already knew what was going to happen. She had thought about telling the others, but Rosalie told her not to and the wide grin Emmett had worn told Bella she should go along with it. Rosalie and Emmett had kept her safe thus far, especially with Edward getting so clingy with this whole ‘mate’ thing.

Bella looked at Rosalie who was somewhat crouched in front of her, only pretending to play along with the Cullen’s. Rosalie and Emmett had to protect their thoughts from Edward, there was only so much they could give away before Edward got wise to what was really going on. Bella had just wanted to have a normal last year of high school before moving in with her girlfriend, but no, she couldn’t catch a break.

With a huff, Bella crossed her arms over her chest and waited for who she knew was about to appear. It was very stupid for the Cullen’s to go on the defensive when they were supposed to be protecting a human. Didn’t Carlisle know that if his whole ‘family’ tensed up to protect someone it would only attract more attention to that person? Vampires were basically like cats, they were incredibly curious and knew how best to be naturally annoying.

“Don’t worry Bella, I’ll protect you.” Edward promised Bella in what he believed to be a romantic gesture he was sure Bella would swoon for. Edward couldn’t afford to even glance at her to get her reaction though as the nomads thoughts were too loud and dangerous for him not to pay attention to him. He would keep Bella safe, even if she didn’t believe they were mates, he would convince and in order to convince her, he had to keep her alive.

Bella was very tempted to tap her foot as she waited for the nomads to appear, knowing they were going slow to be dramatic; again, vampires were like cats. Especially the vampire she was waiting for.

“Just stay calm.” Carlisle whispered just loud enough for Bella hear, while she didn’t seem nervous, even her heartbeat was calm, Carlisle wanted her to know he and his family wouldn’t let these vampires hurt her.

Bella smirked as her friends appeared and she noticed Esme and Carlisle tense, even Jasper was tense but Bella wasn’t sure if that was because of what he was feeling or what he was thinking could happen.

With Rosalie and Emmett’s help, she moved past the Cullen’s with a wide smile and ran towards her friend. She hadn’t seen the redhead in what felt like years, Victoria was her best friend but had gone off to do whatever it was the redhead wanted and was only just returning to visit. Unfortunately she brought friends with her and from the looks of them, Bella didn’t like them. Victoria tended to meet a lot of shady people with the work she does for the Volturi, but the blonde she was with had to be the worst she had seen.

“Victoria, it’s been forever!” Bella yelled with a smile as she ran straight into her laughing best friend. She gripped Victoria in a tight hug as the redhead swung her around with a laugh, it had really been too long since she had seen her best friend.

“Bells! Long time no see.” Victoria said before putting Bella down onto her feet.

“I thought you were going to wait until after graduation to come visit?” Bella asked, acutely aware the Cullen’s were starting to line up behind her, likely with very confused faces.

“Well, work brought be here a little sooner than anticipated.” Victoria said with a smirk similar to a cat who caught the canary.

“Who’s your friend Vikki?” The blonde man asked with a sneer. Bella was sure the man thought she was going to be a meal for someone, the idiot.

“She’s actually with us,” Carlisle said as he put a hand on Bella’s shoulder, laying some sort of claim neither Victoria or Bella appreciated.

Victoria yanked Bella back to her, taking just a single side step to put themselves more to the side instead of in the middle of the two groups.

“Actually,” Victoria sneered, “She’s with me.” Victoria wrapped her arm around the human’s shoulders and sneered at both the Cullen’s and especially the vampires she showed up with, “If you touch a hair on her, I guarantee I’ll be the least of your worries after I kick your ass.” She threatened.

“Oh, come on, she’s just a human, a snack.” The blonde licked his lips as he thought about how delicious the good smelling human would be. He just needed to make sure the gold eyed vampires didn’t get in his way; he was sure Victoria was just pulling some sort of trick or playing some game he wasn’t aware of yet. As long as he got to eat the human in the end, he didn’t care what game the redhead played.

“If you get too close, I promise you death will be the only thing coming for you.” Victoria promised, more than aware the human had a shadow she wasn’t aware of. As smart as Bella was about how vampires acted, the human could be dense sometimes. Did she really think her mate would leave her alone to go to school for a year without her? Bella was an idiot to think her mate wasn’t close.

James smiled what he believed to be a charming smile, he would bid his time and not do anything too hasty. The longer he stayed with them and got more acquainted with her scent, not only would it be more satisfying when he finally got her, but it would also be better if he did in fact have to chase her because her scent would be more ingrained. It would be a quick but delicious hunt.

“Of course love.” James said as he put his hands in his pocket, he could wait. All great hunters had excellent patience.

“I don’t mean to interrupt anybody,” Esme cut in before Victoria could deliver a snide remark about the pet names; she hated being called those names he insisted on calling her, “But Bella, you know this woman?” Esme kindly asked, only concerned for the human. As far as Esme was concerned, any human who had connections with a red eyed vampire only meant that human was going to become food sooner rather than later.

“If she’s done anything to you Bella, I swear I’ll make her pay.” Edward vowed, worried about how close the redhead was to his Bella. Nothing good would come from those two being close.

“Oh calm down Edward,” Bella said, more than tired of his ‘pursing’ of her. She wanted nothing to do with him and the sooner she could graduate and leave, the better off she would be. “Victoria’s my best friend, I practically grew up with her always around.” She said with a roll of her eyes, “She wouldn’t hurt me if her life depended on it.” Bella confidently said with a wide grin.

“She has red eyes, there’s no way that’s true.” Edward said, doing his best to search out the thoughts of the nomads to figure out the truth. He could hear the blonde mans, James, thoughts about the woman and concluded they must be mates. The redhead’s thoughts though, it was like each time she started on a train of thought, her mind immediately switched thoughts. It was like her mind couldn’t settle on a thought, rendering Edward’s gift useless. It was frustrating to him. “Their mates, they’re working together to get to you Bella because you smell so sweet.”

Victoria immediately saw red, how dare this child say she was the mate of the blonde sociopath! Her real mate was so much more than he could ever hope to be! In fact, if wasn’t for the fact she was past her boiling point after having to spend so much time around the jackass, she was sure Heidi wouldn’t mind getting in a few hits on him. Her mate sure could be feisty when she wasn’t trying to flirt the pants off of someone to get her pissed at her for angry sex.

Victoria attacked Edward before Edward could read the intent in her thoughts. Emmett and Rosalie subtly let the redhead attack, knowing Victoria wouldn’t kill Edward just beat the crap out of him. Alice wanted to warn her mate about what she had seen but hadn’t had enough time to not only warn him but also keep her mind clear from Edward; she had only received the visions moments before Edward was in range after all, it was a miracle she hadn’t slipped thus far. Jasper moved to protect Edward, knowing the younger vampire had next to zero experience, but found the redhead was a lot more difficult to catch than he thought.

As Victoria lunged, pushing Bella away from the gaggle of vampires, James found his perfect opportunity. While Victoria’s hand gripped around Edward’s neck and his fellow coven mates attempted to help him, James lunged at Bella with a smile on his face. It was a lot easier to get to the human than he thought.

Bella hadn’t been able to register much with her slower human mind before the blonde male was withering in pain in front of her. She smiled wide as she turned around to find her protector and wasn’t disappointed when she saw a cloaked figure casually walking towards the group.

“I knew you couldn’t stand to be away from me for long.” Bella gloated with a wide smile.

“Please let go of my son, he meant no offense.” Carlisle said, trying to get to Victoria without the redhead tearing off Edward’s head. If Jasper hadn’t been able to catch her, then he doubted he would be able to.

“Please, he means no harm.” Esme pleaded with a worried look on her face.

“He may not have meant any harm, but that doesn’t mean his words don’t cause harm.” Rosalie retorted as she and Emmett started to walk towards the cloaked figure. “Consider us no longer part of the Cullen’s, we’re returning to our coven.”

“Yeah, doing high school over and over again sucks, I don’t want to do it anymore.” Emmett said with a childish grin, “I’m way too cool to be contained in a high school.”

“You’re an idiot.” Rosalie said as she wrapped herself in Emmett’s arms, more amused than anything of what was happening. With Jane making her presence clear, she couldn’t believe the Cullen’s never figured out she had been hanging around town this entire time, Rosalie and Emmett’s job was done. “Now be quiet, let’s see what happens.”

“Sure thing babe.” Emmett said as he pulled his mate into him, more than happy to do what she says.

“You’re not even going to hug me?” Bella asked in shock as her mate walked right past her towards James. “I’m offended.”

“No, you’re an idiot.” Jane said then quicky tore the head off of the tracker Victoria had been sent to study. James had been a possible candidate to join the guard because of his tracking abilities so they sent the redhead to get an assessment on him. From the reports, Jane knew the blonde was as good as dead with how careless he conducted his hunts with unnecessary brutality. “You’re my idiot, but an idiot none-the-less and I’m sick of watching this boy fawn over you. Victoria!” Jane yelled as she tossed the head of the tracker at the redhead to get her attention off the boy. “Why in the hell did you let the tracker out of your control, he could have hurt my mate.” Jane growled, tempted to use her power on the redhead but refrained because it would upset Bella.

“He insulted me!” Victoria yelled as she pushed the man child into his coven leader. “What the hell did you expect me to do? Let him get away with that?” She groused. “I’m going home, I’m done with these vampires, they couldn’t be more boring.”

“You haven’t even spent that much time with them, imagine how I feel.” Rosalie grumbled, “Come on Emmett, we’ll go with her, it’ll be nice to be home after being away for so long.”

“Rosalie, you can’t really be leaving can you?” Esme asked, upset two of her pseudo children were leaving her.

“Esme, you are very nice, but we technically have no ties with you two outside of our diet.” Rosalie responded.

“You knew we were visiting for a little bit, our maker wanted us back as soon as our mission was done, since Jane broke cover, we’re done.” Emmett said with a shrug, “But I promise we’ll keep in touch, it was nice to be here while we were.” Emmett promised, knowing his mate hadn’t entirely enjoyed this mission. They both zoomed off towards the airport to make preparations to return home.

“I’m sorry, but I think we’re missing something here.” Jasper said as he warily watched the feared guard member.

“Don’t worry about Jasper, let’s go home and I’ll tell you everything.” Alice said and then dragged Jasper off with her. She had seen it already, everything was fine; Edward may be a bit emotional afterwards, but her coven would be fine.

“What are you doing here Jane, is there something the Volturi needs with my family?” Carlisle said, struggling to keep up with what was happening. His family was dwindling before his eyes and while he knew two of the members were technically temporary, he hadn’t expected them to leave so abruptly. With a single glare, he kept Edward’s mouth shut, thankfully his makers’ bond with was still strong and affective, otherwise they would be in much bigger trouble as there was no way his son would take to hearing Bella was mated to Jane. He mentally sighed, he and Esme would have to do a lot of talking with him about everything that had transpired; a very, very long talk.

“I’m here to protect my mate.” Jane growled, “Burn this man, he is not someone you want to wake up again.” She walked back towards her mate who eagerly accepted the hug Jane wrapped her to pull Bella into her, “Now, we are more than capable of finishing your schooling at the castle, let’s go home.” Jane said before pulling her mate into a long overdue welcome kiss. To hell with the Cullen’s, if they wanted answers they could try to get in touch with Rosalie or more likely Emmett to get them. All Jane wanted was to get her mate with her where she belonged.
