Hermione sat in her chair, furiously going over every book and notes she could get her hands on to try and figure out the answer. But no matter which book she read, which reference she followed and even all the notes she had borrowed from older students had yet to yield any solid answers. She had to figure it out though, her pride as a knowledgeable woman was on the line.
She knew if she were to ask the blonde sitting across from her, she would get the answer right away… after she admitted her precious books couldn’t help her.
She would die before she let that happen.
“I don’t think it’s in that one ma cherie.” Fleur said with a smirk as she flipped another page in her magazine. She was loving all the time she was able to spend with her mate, making her adorably frustrated was an added bonus. “Perhaps a different one?”
With a huff of annoyance, Hermione opted not to say anything. She knew no matter what she said she would likely get only a raised eyebrow or possibly even a knowing smirk. Hermione wanted to find her answer on her own without her girlfriends help.
“I’ll just go get another book.” Hermione said, she waved her wand to send the books to one of the return carts that were littered around the library. “I’ll be right back.”
Hermione moved quickly to move down another row of shelves that likely wouldn’t have the answer she wanted but at that point, she was really determined to figure it out on her own. She never thought the answer would have been so hard to figure out; especially given the easy question she had asked.
The two girls had been hanging out by the lake talking with each other, just getting to know each other better. It had been a little over a week since the first task where Hermione had nearly had a heart attack as she watch Fleur and the dragon. Hermione had never thought a person as young as herself could get a heart attack, but seeing Fleur surrounded by flames had made her heart nearly explode from how fast it was beating in worry.
Hermione decided, once Fleur had plenty of time to rest and Hermione was sufficiently caught up with her homework, she and Fleur would spend some time to get to know each other better. It just so happened that the first weekend they had was the perfect time. The each made a plate of food for lunch to eat with each other by the lake while also vigorously ignoring their own friends teasing them. Hermione had to hiss at Ginny no less than three times until her own girlfriend Luna got her to be quiet and to leave her be.
Their conversation had started like normal, it was easy and it flowed like no other conversation she typically held with people. The topics jumped around so much she almost felt like she was close to receiving whiplash from the sudden changes. And then she asked a question every first year asked all their new friends; it was the easiest question to ask when getting to know someone because it always gave away so much information about the person.
She asked what Fleur’s wand core was made of.
Then Fleur gave her the smirk she loved to hate and challenged Hermione to guess what it was and if she guessed right, Fleur would take her on a date.
So, in short, Hermione had to win.
She guessed her wand core first, a dragon heartstring, and then she guessed the other two options she knew Ollivander was fond of: unicorn hair and phoenix feather. When Fleur assured her none of those three were her core, Hermione guessed some others she had read about: Troll whisker, Kneazle whisker and even Basilisk horn and Kelpie hair. With those options out, Hermione dragged a laughing Fleur behind to the library to do research and find her answer.
Since the early afternoon after lunch, she had been looking through every book she could find about wands and how to make them. She found a few more possibilities that weren’t commonly used but Fleur had turned them all down. With each failure, Hermione grew more and more upset. She was trying her best to find the answer in any book she could get her hands on but nothing was working.
And Fleur was loving it.
The older blonde would drop the occasional hint, and ask if she gave up yet. Her questions only made Hermione that much more determined to figure it out herself. She had to get the answer, her books had never once failed her before.
Hermione found a book on creatures and their relationship with magic and hoped this book could lead her to the answer. She placed the book on the table, making a quick mental note that Fleur briefly glanced at what she grabbed and was likely about to tease her about her pick.
“I believe this may have to be the last book for the night and then I will tell you.” Fleur said with a smile. She was sure if her mate was left to her own devices she would likely be awake all night trying to find the answer when Fleur would be more than happy to just share. She secretly hoped it was because she was truly determined to get the date Fleur promised and not just the piece of secret information Fleur already knew wouldn’t be in any book. But her mate was practically starved for knowledge and since they were so newly coupled, Fleur hadn’t nearly enough time to know her mate inside and out to be sure which reason was driving Hermione’s force.
Hermione glared at the woman across from her, “No you will not.” Hermione said in the hautiest tone she had ever heard from a Slytherin. She would figure out the answer on her own, with her own books because she was confident there was no knowledge in the world that Hogwarts’ library didn’t at least touch upon. Her books wouldn’t fail her. “I will tell you what the core of your wand is, don’t you worry.” She promised to a grinning Fleur.
“I love how determined you are.” Fleur said as she gave her mate a studious stare, giving Hermione her full attention, dropping her magazine to the table. “I could watch your determined face for hours and never get bored.” Fleur complimented her now blushing mate. In fact, Fleur had just done that very thing as Hermione tried to get her answer and Fleur only wanted to stop so she could get her mate to eat a late dinner before the elves put away all the food in the hall. If her mate was too distracted to take care of herself, then Fleur would do it for her.
Hermione didn’t even bother with a response, she only kept flipping through her book. She could feel Fleur’s eyes on her and she was sure if she looked now, Hermione would only end up giving in to the champion’s demands. It wasn’t fair how easily Fleur got her way with just a look.
“I just need a little more time and I’ll have your answer.” Hermione said with a victorious smirk but still staring at the book. She knew Fleur was right about needing to get food, so Hermione had to make sure to use all her time wisely and not waste any of it by doing silly things like getting distracted by Fleur.
Fleur watched Hermione pour over her book for twenty minutes before she decided it was late enough and if she wanted her evening stroll with her mate around the grounds, it was cold enough to force her mate to walk arm in arm for warmth, she had to stop her mate. Fleur was a very greedy person and while she enjoyed watching her mate doing what she loved, Fleur would love it even more if those studious eyes were studiously watching her instead.
“I’ve got it!” Hermione said as she jolted to her feet and then quickly looked around with a watchful eye, looking for Madame Pince to scold her for being so loud. Once she was sure she was safe from getting in trouble, she gave her girlfriend a victorious smile, “I know what your wand core is.” Hermione announced on a more subdued volume but no less enthusiastic.
Fleur looked at her mate, completely amused by how sure Hermione was. There was no way her mate had figured it out, she knew there was no book in the wizarding world that would hold the information her mate was seeking.
“And what is it mon amour?” Fleur asked, knowing this particular term of endearment always made her mate flush. Fleur loved seeing her mate blush, it always felt like such an accomplishment to make such a sturdy person embarrassed.
Hermione mentally shook her head so as to keep her focus and not turn into a pile of love sick mush. “It’s a Thunderbird tail feather.” Hermione revealed with a wide smile, “It’s not very much used in the UK, but it has been known to use throughout Europe, including in Spain, Italy and France.” Hermione explained her logic on the last passage she read. It hadn’t been a very big paragraph but it was still the best, and really just the last, option Hermione could think of. “Your wand core is a Thunderbird tail feather.”
Fleur stood from her seat, walked around the table and watched as her mate’s smile started to slowly dim as she remained quiet. Fleur wrapped Hermione in a hug and pulled her in close, “It is not.” Fleur said then kissed her mate’s cheek, earning another blush, and then pulled her mate by her hand towards the libraries exit. With a quick wave of Fleur’s wand, the last remaining books on the table were sent on their way to the return cart and Fleur focused on getting her mate to the dining hall to get some food.
“I’m sure if I had another day, I could find the answer.” Hermione insisted, not sure if her need to find the answer was greater than her desire for a date with Fleur. They called themselves girlfriends but thus far they had yet to have a date. Hermione was really looking forward to going on a date with her blonde girlfriend so they could officially be dating. She didn’t think they could properly say they were dating if they hadn’t actually gone on one.
The walked out of the library hand in hand and walked towards the hall.
“I’m sure Hermione.” Fleur said with a grin. Just before they entered the hall, Fleur pulled her mate back into her for a hug and dragged her to the corner so they were out of the way of passing students, “The wand core is my grand=mere’s hair.” She said as she nuzzled her mates neck, inhaling her scent. Feeling her mate so close brought such calmness and strength to Fleur that the veela felt she could accomplish anything if her mate wished it.
Hermione immediately jerked back and gave Hermione and non-too gentle push against her chest.
“That’s not possible.” Hermione said, annoyed her girlfriend would lie so blatantly. “Now you’re just being mean.” Hermione said with a pout, causing the blonde to laugh, making a few of the passing students to stare at the gorgeous blonde and bookworm in the corner.
Fleur once again started to pull her mate towards food, knowing she was about to upset her mate just a little more with what she was about to say; but she had to keep her mate on her toes.
“It’s a family tradition.” Fleur told her as she walked towards the Gryffindor table where the bright red hair of her mate’s friends stood out amongst the loudest table in the hall. If it wasn’t for the fact her mate was friends with all the loud children, Fleur would want nothing to do with them. “Some day, when we are much closer, I promise I’ll tell you.”
“That’s not fair.” Hermione said with a pout, upset about both losing out on her date and the knowledge.
Hermione kissed her mate’s cheek again, ignoring the jeers the redhead female was yelling at them. Did she really need to yell so loud everyone in the hall could hear her making fun of her Hermione? She felt it was entirely unnecessary.
“It wasn’t fair mon amour,” Fleur said with a smile as they took their seats, “Perhaps on our date next weekend, we can talk more about it?”
Fleur’s smile grew as Hermione uncharacteristically squealed for just a moment before hugging her girlfriend, happy for both the date and the promise of more information. In the meantime, she would have to do as much research as she could to figure out the answer before the blonde could tell her.
Fleur smiled fondly as she watched her mate turn back to her friends and start gathering food, what her mate didn’t know was that Fleur wouldn’t be able to tell her much of anything until they were at least engaged. Unless her mate figured out things on her own and if Fleur could help her along by dropping hints and clues to infuriate her mate into looking for information outside of the UK, then Fleur was okay with that. Her mate was smart and Fleur didn’t like keeping secrets from her.
Fleur was looking forward to leading Hermione into learning more about veela and their traditions. It would be a lovely little chase.
