Evil Dead (2013) - WATCH ALONG

This movie was so gory! I was expecting nothing less from an Evil Dead movie. As a remake I thought it was interesting and enjoyable, silly at some moments. Felt like it was missing that comedic value though which I love so much about Evil Dead and that may very well be because Ash Williams was absent. Would've killed to see a Bruce Campbell appearance, but nonetheless still enjoyed this one. Interested to hear your guys' thoughts on this one!

Is this the regular version, or the unrated version?

So, I actually like this movie a lot. Of the five films released it easily lands in the top 3 along with Evil Dead 2, and Evil Dead Rise. The original film is solid, but pretty dated, and Army of Darkness feels a little out of place in this horror franchise, as it's not at all a horror film. Actually, I belive there's a good, even split as to whether people think this is better or worse than the original. As for the rape scene... I thought this version was far tamer than the original. It was nowhere near as long, and (in my opinion) was nowhere near as brutal or visceral. They just put the vine snake up the coochie and boom, over. The first film had like a 5 minute long sequence slowly removing Cheryl's clothes, slowly breaking her defenses, and then shoving a giant branch in her. This was quick. Still uncomfortable, but not to the same extent. Of course, nobody has ever liked the rape scenes, but while Raimi says he went a little overboard, his intention nonetheless was to make the audience uncomfortable, as it was a horror movie. And he succeeded. This movie, taking heavy inspiration from the original, "upated" the scene, I guess, and toned it down heavily. I'm not sure why Fedé included it, but he did. And it does its job of making the audience uncomfortable. And while one could easily argue neither scene is needed for either movie, both of them are intended to show how the evil gets into people, which is by impregnating a woman with a forest, I guess. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but it's Evil Dead. Making sense is not its strong suit. As for this movie not needing to be made, as you so eloquently put it, I heavily disagree. But then again, it is in my top three Evil Dead films. So I'm biased. It's also one of the few pure horror films I've seen that actually works. Most other horror films need other elements like comedy or drama. In the case of Child's Play, a LOT of comedy as the series progressed. And in the case of The Exorcist, a LOT of drama. Like, a lot.
