“How are you feeling?” I asked Maddy as we watched her parents drive away.
“I’m okay,” she said. “I mean… I’ve been better, but at least I feel like I can finally relax now. Wait, except I said I’d email them about gender stuff when they got home. Fuck. I gotta write that. Welp, I have immediately returned to being stressed.”
I gave her a hug. “I can help you write it, if you want.”
She sighed. “It’s fine. I feel like I should do this myself. I’ll just write something short and get it over with. Here, I’ll do it now.” She pulled at her phone and started tapping away at Gmail.
I could see that her hands were trembling as she typed. I put a hand on her shoulder to help steady her, and a minute or so later she finished up the email to her parents.
“C-can you take a look at it? Just make sure it seems reasonable and whatever.”
“Sure,” I said. I took the proffered phone and quickly read the email. “Yeah, it seems fine. Should I hit send?”
“No!” Maddy said. “No, I… I should do it.” She took her phone back and, visibly shaking, tapped the send button.

“Well, I think that’s all my energy for the day,” I said. “How would you feel about cuddling with me on the couch and watching me play Hades?”
“Sounds good to me!” Steve said. “Oh, I might get some kind of snack for us. Shouldn’t take too long. Feel free to start without me, if you want.”
“Nah, I think I’ll follow you around and annoy you,” I said. “You can’t escape me, regardless of what room you flee to.”
“I’m pretty happy with that arrangement,” Steve said, “except maybe don’t follow me into the bathroom.”
