A ghostly moodboard

Hi there!

I'm finally diving into a project that's been on my mind for at least a year, and which I started working on in March when I was looking for a dress design. The costume has finally arrived (I'll be posting a photo set soon!) and I'm now working on the script for what will be my ‘spooky’ video of the year.
And, yes, this time I intend to go a little darker than I usually do, by tackling the subject of spiritualism / seance in a roleplay set in the 1840s, some parts of which will be filmed outdoors. My inspirations come from a variety of sources and I'm still researching the rise of spiritualism in the 19th century (although it really began in the 1850s).
I'm also rewatching movies with strong ghostly / gothic atmospheres or inspiring ambiences & lighting. Do you have any favourite?
I'm also looking for older movies about these themes, suggestions are always welcome (but I don't like horror/gory movies 😅).

This roleplay will be released at the end of October, and for those who don't like spooky videos, I'm planning lighter/funnier projects for the end of the year! 😀

Moodboard movie pictures from:
- Jane Eyre (2011)
- The Others (2001)
- Lady MacBetch (2016)
- Crimson Peak (2015)
- Personal Shopper (2016)

I easily get afraid too, I'll keep jumpscares out of the video :p

This is going to be absolutely amazing!! I can feel it already! I get afraid too easily so I never watch horror or spooky stuff 🤭 but I do love moody and magic/supernatural themes. Everything you’ve done so far for spooky season has been fantastic, but I have the feeling this will be EPIC!!!! 🤎

Ah yes, Dracula was one of my favourite movies for years! I've never watched Coraline, I'll have a look, thanks :)

Moonlight Cottage ASMR

Not sure it’s what you are looking for but Bram Stoker’s Dracula is a very atmospheric film, not horrid and the costumes and settings are breathtaking. Book published 1897 so a bit later than you want, maybe. Coraline?

Elsita Cacahuete

Yes I'm planning to watch this one, thanks! :)

Super excited about this! A Haunting in Venice seems like something right up the alley for this, hopefully it helps ♥

Simsiloquy

Very excited!

Laura Roberts

Thank you Barbara, I'll have a look at these :)

Moonlight Cottage ASMR

Ah yes I read that story too! Very sad for her indeed, she tried for many years without any result...

Moonlight Cottage ASMR

Thanks! yes I've watched a few clips but I don't think a whole episode would be for me ^^

I love the suggestions in the other comments, but I don't want to repeat what they've said. The first season of the show Carnival Row (Victorian fantasy London) is wonderfully moody and gorgeous with some séance/dark magic rituals. Other shows like The Alienist, Ripper Street, Miss Scarlet and the Duke, The Nevers, and The Frankenstein Chronicles, portray a dark Victorian era very well, too. Some of them might be too late 19th Century for your target.

I love intrigue & mystery… And I’ve loved some of the dark places that you’ve gone especially because you’re such a good storyteller. But like you, I don’t like horror or gory movies. In fact, I don’t really care for being scared too much lol. Mysterious…yes….dark…yes….but playing on the edge. I know that whatever you come up with the set and the costumes and the story will be amazing, so I’m really looking forward to this! And I love that you’re branching out into different areas and pushing your limits. It’s the best way to grow, and as a fan, I’m thrilled to be taken along for the ride! Anticipation makes for even more excitement!!

Marge Ramsey

I love the little dark touches in your videos so I am so looking forward to the end result xx

Jake Field

It's much more horror than the other movies you have mentioned, but the tv show Penny Dreadful has some beautiful Victorian era aesthetics.

You're so welcome! If you only have time for one, stick with Rebecca! Can't wait to see what you create in your next video! :)

Interesting subject. Spooky indeed. The great magician Harry Houdini researched deeply into seance's and also psychics and mediums. Before Houdini died, he and his wife agreed that if Houdini found it possible to communicate after death, he would communicate the message "Rosabelle believe", a secret code which they agreed to use. Rosabelle" was their favorite song. The tradition of holding a séance for Houdini continues, held by magicians throughout the world. To this day, all have been unsuccessful.

Thank you! I read "Rebecca" years ago and I loved it, but never watched the movie, I will definitely watch it! :) However I tried to watch The illusionist shortly after it was released but didn't get into it, maybe I'l try again.

Moonlight Cottage ASMR

Oh! And The Illusionist (2006) has some supernatural elements to it as well. The story takes place in 1900's Vienna.

I recommend watching Rebecca (1940), directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Great cast and the atmospheric vibe you're looking for in the set designs! Based on a novel by Daphne du Maurier. Wikipedia describes her works as, "moody and resonant with overtones of the paranormal." Enjoy! 🍿

This is going to be EPIC!

En effet, je pensais plus à l’épique du film qu’au sujet...

I forgot about Sleepy Hollow. DEFINITELY an outstanding example of spookiness!

Un film que j'ai beaucoup regardé à une époque, même si on s'éloigne du spiritisme, l'atmosphère et l'histoire sont superbes !

Moonlight Cottage ASMR

Ah, thank you! Nice shot indeed, which reminds me of another one from "personal shopper" I was going to use as inspiration :)

Thanks!

Angel Heart (1987) comes to mind. In terms of some of the imagery. Although it's been a long time since I last saw that one. Might be closer to the hardboiled detective style. Dark City (1998) also. With respect to atmosphere and lighting.

Morganna

Great movies. I am already getting the chills.

There’s a great Dr Who episode called “Hide” that is about ghosts. Quite spooky. 7th season, with Matt Smith as the Doctor.

Martha Brody

I'm really looking forward to that! I love the atmopsheres of Sleepy Hollow and Corpse Bride.

I'm excited to see this new video, Diane! My whole house resembles your mood board, because I decorate in the Dark Academia style, which is moody, gothic, and spooky. I got my ideas by searcing Dark Academia online and from Netflix's "Lockwood and Co", the Harry Potter movies, and sets like Holmes and Watson's sitting room in the Benedict Cumberbatch TV series. That said...maybe THIS movie is along the lines of what you have in mind: The Woman in Black. Watch the trailer all the way to the end (shiver). ;) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnY0fEV30Wk
