Sometimes a benign looking artifact will do something dangerous, or suck enough energy to give you heatstroke or make your channeling organs burn.

They are the Shell's eminient experts on artifacts' history and function, and other factions will pay dearly for their insight. The most valuable speciments are put to use. Famous examples are the divining sphere (a kind of channeling radar) and the tissue core (extrudes an intelligent tissue-replenishing goo). Less valuable artifacts are sold or filed away for further study.
