I am a massive fan of this film for so many reasons but I've also found Baudrillard's comments on the film to be kinda narrow minded. I'm not really sure he understood the film, or at the very least, film analysis was outside of his wheelhouse. The question of meaning and what the Matrix symbolizes, falls precisely within the scope of Simulacra and Simulation to me. Can you truly live authentically if your entire perception of the world is built on distorted echos of the past? Does that existence still have meaning? What does it mean that there are people that would fight to maintain fiction over truth? Isn't that the real danger, to prioritize fiction over truth because we've assigned meaning to something that doesn't exist? The Matrix suggests its choice that gives life meaning, and its choosing to accept truth and embodying it that you gain true meaning and purpose. Baudrillard seems to interpret the entire "simulation" as a heavy handed attempt at adapting his work, and falls more inline with Plato's cave... Kinda, but I think he missed what the film was saying. Neo works at a software company, he goes to work in a cubicle, he's drowning in quiet desperation for something real, but he can't find that meaning because he can't see the world for what it really is. Is the movie an academic paper? No, it's cinema. It's to entertain and for what it is, I think it's excellent.
