I get where he’s coming from, and I’m not trying to hate on him at all — but I genuinely don’t see this as a sign of intelligence. He’s basically holding on to an idea he first had as a kid, and after all these years he’s had plenty of time to rethink it, look at history, look at real-world examples, and notice why it doesn’t work. The whole “split the country in two” thing isn’t exactly new — it shows up in every sitcom as a joke where someone draws a line through a room, and it *always* falls apart. And historically it’s even worse: Germany literally tried the “two halves” model and it was a disaster. With the amount of time he’s had to reflect, you’d expect him to see that by now. So I’m not saying he’s a bad person, but I honestly don’t know how much of this is actually grounded in serious or intelligent thought.

This guy is genuinely dangerous and I can see why they made him the spokesperson for the group. When most white-supremacists speak they immediately come off as: 1) uneducated; 2) hate-filled; and 3) creepy/weird. He looks normal and is sufficiently well informed about political theory, history, philosophy, and economics to speak at length about them to Andrew without stumbling over a word. The majority of the things that he says are not even strictly speaking "inaccurate", just framed in a deceptive way and used to justify a racist conclusion. Also notice how calculated the language he's using is, to the point that he is even careful to correct himself when he says "the blacks". He does an excellent job of making his beliefs, which are based on batshit insane premises, sound perfectly reasonable and not necessarily threatening to non-white people. I think that Andrew came underprepared to interview Eric and the pushback that he gave throughout most of the interview was extremely weak. I can't even really blame him because Eric is rhetorically extremely slick. The truth of the matter is though that he's full of shit. There is no version of white supremacy that doesn't seek to impose its will on whatever its conceptualization of the "other" is. The moment a perspective like this became a majoritarian opinion, this same soft-spoken guy would be hopped up on amphetamines and storming the Polish border. He likes the idea of small, insulated communities of Neo-Nazis because that's the only framework that he images will help to keep his backwards ideology alive in light of demographic change.

this guy has a very incomplete understanding of history. if you study chinese history, you know that there is an agricultural dividing line between the north and northwest and the south and south east of china. and that line is the wheat - rice line. don't get me wrong, everyone enjoys rice and wheat, and everyone probably traded it for a long time, but if you pay attention to regional cuisine, most of the wheat noodle and dumpling dishes are from the north whereas the rice and rice noodle based dishes usually come from the south/southeast.

I have been saying for awhile- I think ‘white people’ do need some cultural grounding. I was lucky enough to grow up dancing around a may pole every year and celebrating the solstices. Among other traditions, within my community. We included everyone and people from other backgrounds also shared their traditions. The village I lived in started celebrating Chinese new year because we had a few Chinese classmates that felt if we celebrated solstice we should also celebrate their traditions. Their parents would come in every year and help us make a dragon to parade around town, educating us on the history of the tradition. It wasn’t a big deal or controversy. It was like of course we can all participate and teach each other. I do feel connected in ways to culture beyond what the typical ‘white person’ in America feels. The assimilation of various European cultures into the wider culture of America is not a good thing, there is a reason other ethnicities resist total assimilation. I think it creates a lack people don’t know how to fill. To jump from a longing to feel connected to your ancestors to getting into white supremacy is so odd to me. What confuses me about his perspective is why, when he's building a community that seems more focused around morals, principles, and ethics, race needs to be a component of that. I think we do need stronger communities, but drawing lines around race or ancestry is not a good way to achieve that for our country. I also wonder if the way he views building communities in America is influenced at all by being raised with the Internet, as I see many parallels between having small communities and the small communities that have formed on places like Reddit, etc.
