Preventing the Next LA Wildfire: 5CAST with Andrew Callaghan (#3) Feat. Danielle Venton

Great convo, best I've watched yet on the topic

Lucas Stengl

one relatively important part of this issue, that both drives negative consequences of wildfires, and contributes to ecosystem instability on multiple levels, is the planting of non-native, fire-prone plants. At a larger scale, coniferous monocultures for timber/forestry ops (often) planted next to more resilient native forest types can increase the acreage of fires. At a smaller scale, fire prone species like tasmanian blue gum eucalyptus, aborvitae, cedars, & cypress, are often planted in the landscaping next to homes. Fire prone species have oily leaf tissue and produce heaps of dry bark, potentially exacerbating fires, increasing their intensity. You can make your home/neighborhood/etc a lot more fire-safe by simply removing, avoiding, or not planting this species, and choosing fire-safe native species, which also supports native biodiversity and local wildlife

loved this ep! super interesting stuff. loved the fish convo lol

Learned a lot today, thank you 5

5cast is my new meditation substitute. Rly great work. Even though the topics are kinda depressing, your clear stance gives hope. We need more "cut the bullshit"-attitude on the left

This made me think about the Hermit's Peak/Calf Canyon fire in NM, it was a federal prescribed burn that went wrong and there was a lot of pushback

PLEASE DO A PIECE ON THE NEW FOUND NEWS OF RICCI WYNNE!! Haha oh the irony

Justin Smith

Two family members of mine are active woodland firefighters. They do a lot of traveling across the Midwest and West coast - the experiences they share are extremely intense and I think they definitely deserve more recognition and eyes on their work and it's impact on their lives. Not to mention the impact their efforts have on the lives of society and lives around them! Thanks for shining a light on this 🙏 super important

"The leftist virus"? Wow.

who, me

Andrew These are so fucking good

Adam P Rozycki

People arent leaving CA just for cheaper costs and tax breaks. Rogan moved to Austin because of the insane leftist narrative and lies during the covid deal. Many people just realized how much the leftist virus sucks.

Im not compromised. I love the fish, and Alaskan Native People who have harvested them for thousands of years in symbiosis.

Dimitrios Alexiadis

Yo Andrew, reporting from Anchorage Alaska. There’s a big salmon story waiting for you here. Trawlers harvesting Pollock and taking the fish out of state and throwing away healthy Salmon as bycatch. Their fishery has ruined and is ruining different salmon stocks in Southwest Alaska. Most of the wealth from this trawling makes its way out of State to fishermen from the PNW, but there are CDQ groups that were established by the Magnuson Stevens Act that own their own boats that harvest pollock and “invest in the communities” only to pay their executives huge salaries and further decimate the salmon. NOAA and the NPFMC are basically tasked with regulating these commercial fisheries in the Bering Sea. NOAA has historically under emphasized trawlers impact on the fish stock and has pointed to climate change and the need for more research. The NPFMC is corrupt and typically those who serve on it do so and move on to lucrative fisheries lobbying jobs. Several of the NPFMC seats were chosen by Gov Dunleavy who receives campaign contributions from trawler businesses and trade groups. The tradeoff is, deplete an ecosystem to harvest one species while killing another because the catch per unit effort for catching pollock in the Bering Sea when you’re using nets that are miles long is the easiest way to generate food to feed us, which doesn’t mean its sustainable.

Dimitrios Alexiadis

She was awesome. Great cast.
