Māori March on Parliament (Hikoi) - PART 2/2 (DAVID SEYMOUR INTERVIEW)

Hey guys,

Here's our interview with David Seymour, a New Zealand politician who has been the Leader of ACT New Zealand and the Member of Parliament (MP), and recently proposed the controversial Treaty Principles Bill, which led to widespread protests led by Māori-aligned coalitions.

Enjoy

Comments

Always agreed with this but the patreon has been like this forever, and many people have raised this issue before to no avail

Todd Jensen

With respect. Y'all are cooked if you think he's representing Maori culture in any way shape or form. I didn't mention blood quantum, and many tribes here refuse to operate based on da quantum either, just genealogy. Sure, he might be a descendant, but that means nothing about his cultural values. Him essentially saying "LOL I'm technically Maori too" juxtaposed with his policy is just pathetic my guy. Hope your country gets this worked out, ours is even more fucked. Prayers

Zebulon Destroyer of Worlds

With respect. He is Maori. We do not do blood quantum here. Everyone is mixed race, maori is defined by whakapapa, not blood quantum. By law or by culture. This government is the most Maori representative government we have ever had by any definition

Dan Mladenov

the fact that they still act like being gay is legal is something that is something that shouldn't just be expected always annoys me yet I still think I might move there instead of staying in the US has crossed my mind TOO much

@Colorstormfur on Tiktok

too right bro. fuck a gentailer

Seatile

I notice he mentions wind farms not being built as an example of us not progressing as a country. This is patently disingenuous which is typical of Seymour, as there are a large number of wind farms already permitted to build for a while now. There is 675MW already secured a permit to build = 7.1% of NZs existing generation capacity, with ~50% total capacity in the pipeline or under various forms of investigation. See here: https://www.windenergy.org.nz/onshore-wind/onshore-windfarm-pipeline/ The reason these haven't been built yet isn't because of iwi bottlenecking the process or whatever reason he might give, it's because in 2014 the national government floated our power companies (which have combined control over retail and generation) as publicly listed, so they were incentivised to profit. The way this is done in the NZ energy industry is by not adding more generation capacity to artificially keep power prices high and turn a profit. Hope this helps refute at least one of his points for others reading this.

Fractal

Totally agree. I at least think there should be an easier way to keep track of them chronologically.

Aaron Parks

so true cuz

Seatile

Hey guys, I don't know if its an engagement thing, and I def support you doing what you need to do to maximize your reach and income to continue the fantastic reporting you do, BUT I find all the different parts, unsorted and scattered through the Patreon post list a bit of a frustrating viewer experience. I would love to see all the various parts collected into one full video once they're all released. So I don't have to scroll through to find each part. Just my 2 cents! Keep it up!!!

octopus

I was wrong on the projects, fair enough. I will stand by my opinion on how he answered those questions though. Many of his answers felt like they intentionally skirted around what Andrew was actually asking.

Nova

11 of the 149 listed projects are considered mining projects. 58 housing and land development, 43 infrastructure, 22 renewable energy. plenty of things we absolutely must get on with in aotearoa, sure. our consenting and planning practises need to constantly improve and adapt and we need as many new zealanders involved as possible. epic politics moment though, when this geeza convinces/confuses most of the country into believing this blanket, lazy, extractive, detached, janky ass bill is the best aotearoa can do. ppffffffft.

Seatile

its their land.

Holy Moomareb

corporate cuck

Holy Moomareb

Man what a fucking textbook example of politician speak. He talks for so long but says so little, and is apparently terrified of answering questions in an even vaguely direct way. There were parts of his answers I could swear were direct quotes from George Carlins language bit at the 99' national press club. Also wish you asked him for a breakdown of what most of those pending fast tracked projects were, would be telling if they were all mining

Nova

Andrew, you need to put this on YouTube without failure. From the perspective of a Chumash person Indigenous to California, this dipshit has no idea what he's talking about. Fucker isn't Maori and he's actively undermining the futures of indigenous families. Fuck this twat

Zebulon Destroyer of Worlds

The question is is “betterment of mankind” only defined by white western people? Because the point is the native people there, like in Canada, like in US, like in South America, have a different view of what bettering the world looks like. Sounds to me like these guys view of a more equal world is defined by “a forest only has value if you cut it down”.

Splinter

Nah, absolute nonsense- nonce-sense in the case of Seymour, to quote Brass Eye. Anything Seymour says is a lie, his only goal is to sell out NZ to alien foreigners.

Seth Aronovich

No offence but I couldn't disagree more. As a NZer I don't think Andrew did a brilliant job of highlighting the most critical and adversarial position around this issue, but Andrew is not really in a position to know anything more than he currently does. Running a hitpiece on a politician, and then actually reaching out to talk to them - that is the essence of good journalism. "Doesn't deserve platforming" is a cowardly position – look around the comments here, almost no one has taken seymour on face value. We are all here because we appreciate raw unbiased journalism. We can make up our own minds, and we don't want to be spoon fed correct opinions. Edit: My response is to the OP, I agree with Mark Walle completely. We were served propaganda from both sides.

Luke Woods

I think seymour speaks well in this interview – but as a NZer I know about his awkward nature and slimey history. he seems to focus entirely on the bottleneck of appeasing local iwi (which I don't necessarily agree or disagree with – I think this is a fair conversation). But he doesn't mention anything else in the fast-track bill, which in my understanding also bypasses a number of environmental laws and protections, such as the wildlife act, the conservation act, and the norms of public consultation. In the end he's trying to make this out as some kind of populist "all equal under the law" bill – but I don't trust him. He's says he's in it for all New Zealanders, but it sure seems like there's going to be a small number of business leaders which are going to be taking the lions share of these exploits.

Luke Woods

Just curious how come at least part one isn’t available on YouTube? Cause YouTube?

eri edwards

Thanks Andrew and team for the NZ ways!! Just gotta say he won the local electoral vote where I flatted in Auckland. Very much wanted to egg boy him.

William Jackman

How does letting big corporations dig up a dolphin and whale sanctuary to mine gold and generate profit for shareholders raise up the working class?

Ben

He's Based: everyone is the same, the real struggle is globally; decreasing wages and a decreasing middle class. Don't get caught up in tribalism-- it's the wrong cause, the right cause is the betterment of mankind, decreased corporate greed, less control by governments and their funders(the rich, corporations), and more money for the working class, as well as protecting the environment reasonably. Too much environmentalism leads to poverty as well as cost of living and energy cost increases. So the balance between environmentalism and progress is the issue, not old contracts and separation of people into groups with conflicting interests.

Journalists are supposed to ask hard questions, otherwise you’re just listening to the propaganda from both sides; propaganda that each side is respectively very practiced in delivering. Challenging preconceptions is how the fourth unearths the truth; which is the main objective of objective of journalism. Maintaining true objectivity is impossible; furthermore, the expectation that journalism must maintain objectivity has been weaponized by nefarious political forces to undermine trust in the press, control narratives, and deflect accountability. They use the impossibility of objectivity by human journalists to paint them as fools, and that has effectively rotted the fourth estate. In this whole two-parter, neither interviewer asked questions that challenged their subjects preconceived notions or made efforts to unearth the truth from the messaging. I was disappointed. This is not Channel 5’s strong suit -yet-, but I think Andrew and C5 earnestly tries and has potential. I just think with this they kinda called it in, as more of a “hey, America; the rest of the world has stuff going on too y’know?” Type of effort.

Mark Walle

The point of objective journalism is to present information about an issue from both sides and allow the viewer to form their own opinion. I think its clear that many people see through his bullshit and in essence he is digging his own grave. Id rather hear the lies he has to say to condemn him further than get fed the narrative of one side only.

Mattie!

I wish you would have asked him how the fast track bill is problematic in terms of damaging the environment and ecosystems. This guy claims to be part of NZ’s culture of environmentalism yet that bill seems to have very little protection for the oceans and environment in general. I would like to see this dude pushed on that to defend it or tell us something we may not know. Anyways, this is why I pay for Channel 5 and happy to do it. You get both sides and you get the facts. Thank you.

Sebastian

0 respect for this dick sucker...sorry. WTF is he even talking bout just BS the entire time

OnederB71 NLN

I dunno I don't trust this guy is authentic...

OnederB71 NLN

Andrew I usually appreciate your content but this is the first time I'm concerned you have helped to validate and provide legitimacy to someone who doesn't deserve platforming. As a New Zealander it sickens me that David is allowed to conflate ethical with non-ethical while working for large lobbyists. He's leaving his mark on this country by acting high and mighty when he talks to you and disparaging real efforts and people in the name of "healthy debate". He suggested bombing the Ministry for Pacific peoples, consider this interview with a re-framing, what if this was the future Benjamin Netanyahu, do you feel like you pushed hard enough when you had the chance now? I appreciate trying to leave bias out of things but when you are given the opportunity to talk to him directly while our entire country has to march on the street to even get noticed it feels wrong to see him leaving thinking he's helped his cause.

Ross Leitch

both sides of the story understood, I think equal rights not family rights is a good thing especially if less than 20% have more say than the other 80%

hogofwar

Oh shit! ...guess I've been doing it wrong this whole time.

DW

Yes, the only reason the zionist entity and its puppets like Seymour exist is to rape, torture, and murder the innocent.

Seth Aronovich

More importantly, nobody profiting from the mining will be New Zealanders. Seymour is an enemy of our nation and the entire human race.

Seth Aronovich

I think treating everyone as human beings is exactly how you prevent genocide

SkullzCrew

Back in the day I managed to get a scholarship to a private school in Auckland and he frequented visits to our school assemblies, in an attempt to recruit young teens from affluent families into his "young ACT" party. He often added teen girls (and boys like myself) from my school on snapchat, and some of his snap replies were borderline creepy (many many screenshots from 2018/2019 to prove it). Also he refused to attend one of my mum's "NZ Women in Medicine" conferences (she's a GP) because she wanted to press him with very reasonable questions about the current state of our health system. He went on to say that she was "too much of a snarky liberal" and made some very mean comments in an email (HE SOMEHOW IS THE LITERAL MINISTER FOR REGULATION + ASSOCIATE MINISTER OF HEALTH FOR NZ). The man is a gutless bonifide dickhead standing up for the richest 1%, we all know it here.

kensnark

Thank you Channel 5 for reporting on this! If you have the opportunity I think a story on the Atlas network and David's involvement with them would be very interesting. There's been some strong accusations against David on this.

Davis Cooper

Thank you as always for showing both sides of this!

Blake

He didn't even say kaiakitanga right

Guy

While the questions you asked I feel are fair to ensure that both sides of a subject are given equal measure, I think you let him sit too comfortable without any real pressing questions that the Maori are frustrated with. For example, he expressed a desire to bring jobs to NZ that incorporate mining, and he's funded by the wealthy, but he mentioned that NZ is a very heavy country on nature conservation. Would pushing for fast track mining within NZ overwrite the nature conservation he mentioned like we do in the US with mining contracts and how they pollute and destroy local habitats? Additionally, from the video you guys did recently on the AZ mining happening in the Canyon, would the indigenous people of Maori also be placed at the wayside and given zero equity in it?

Matthew Bourgoine

Not sure how you got to that point from what is being said here

Joel Panther

I respect you guys gave this cunt a platform because his bigotry speaks for its self, especially after the last video. This dog will never and can never represent this country and its culture. He's funded by a lot of powerful people though, so we have to fight hard. ANYONE WHO SEES THIS PLEASE SUPPORT THE CAUSE FIGHT THIS BILL!!!

Ollie Warren

MERRY CHRISTMAS ALL AND BLESSINGS. AS SOMEONE WHO KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT THIS TOPIC IM READING ALL THE COMMENTS & CLICKING LINKS. 1ST VIEWING SEEMS LIKE TRANSPARENT REPORTING WITH THIS DUDE MAKING SOME VALID/INTERESTEING POINTS/DANCEMOVES. EXCITED FOR ANOTHER YEAR OF CHANNEL 5 NEWS

Jamesdean00

This guy can go fuck himself right off

ARagingChipmunk

Just checking in. The post I saw about it was super dramatic like "we're posting this tomorrow come hell or high water because that's how we roll!" ... that's the only reason I ask

rainbowdark

There is so much that he is leaving out.

Glenn Sandoval

@Seth Aronovich if I support Israel's right to exist then I'm also responsible for genocide in Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen AND New Zealand? Are there any more countries I should add to the list?

DW

Nah, treating zionists (as David Seymour is) like human beings is how you get the genocide being carried out against the people of Palestine (and Lebanon, Yemen, and Syria).

Seth Aronovich

I think it's only fair to provide complete coverage, but I would have liked to see his feet held to the fire more. Feels as though it might be difficult to do so given that Andrew isn't from your country and this is at least made out to be a hyper-complicated economic topic.

Nathan Taylor

Homie, editing takes time

Nathan Taylor

i think everyone should be treated as human being or you get a situation like what is going on in israel. if you don’t do it you will just continue the trend. this is why i support channel 5 because they don’t judge people no matter how fucked up shit they say. and they showed both sides of the coin here so you can decide what’s is your own opinion on the matter

Alan Nakari

bro you staunchly promised coverage of the free luigi protest at WSP a day or two ago. saw footage, know you did it. you been silenced?

rainbowdark

This is basically the equivalent of doing a puff piece with Jeffrey Epstein. I mean, they did interview 'israelis' and treat them like human beings recently, which was bad enough, but this is almost worse.

Seth Aronovich

As a New Zealander, David Seymour is a VERY curious individual well worth looking into. He is known for sending Snapchat messages to teenage girls. A little while back, Seymour's good friend Timothy Jago, who he hung out with a lot in social situations because of their similar interests, the chap who ran things behind the scenes at his political party, unexpectedly resigned. Seymour's 'Treaty Principles Bill' is just him attempting to racebait white New Zealanders and make us think we're getting one over on the Maoris, when everything in it is just intended to sell out our country to the foreign usurers who pay him to subvert our nation. Here's a totally unrelated link: https://www.parliament.nz/mi/pb/hansard-debates/rhr/document/HansS_20230822_058680000/4-question-no-4-prime-minister/

Seth Aronovich

build baby build

ted

Selling out unbelievably cheap. Not even a nz vacation, just remote propaganda

DonettaTrump

Such an insane comparison he made at the end there...

Brooke Terry

As a NZ born, I really can’t believe you guys gave this POS a platform.

Joel Panther

all I want for Christmas is a new Channel5 drop!
