Dunkin' Donuts Workers Strike
Added 2024-12-06 22:01:19 +0000 UTCHey guys,
Here's our coverage of the Dunkin' Donuts Workers Strike at the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, which happened when their parent company HMS Host installed an automated kiosk in one their airport locations.
Many workers fear that robots will steal their jobs..
Watch to learn more.

Cant they just eliminate her job instead? If you never want to advance yourself into the white collar based on keeping your union protections-- wouldnt it just be easier for the company to eliminate your job via a machine replacement?

2025-02-08 21:58:22 +0000 UTCare you stupid? the entire point of a union is the ability to collectively bargain through the usage of strikes and work stoppages. Were you under the impression that joining a union is some sort of magical kryptonite to a corporation, where they just have to concede to your demands without any sort of pressure or effort from the workforce?

2024-12-19 05:23:52 +0000 UTC"Wage slave job" what an oxymoron. This person gets paid And gets to go home and can chose to leave their job without without any repercussions or having to pay any form of reparation stop the nonsense. If he wants another job he should go find one that's a better use pf time than protesting automation which actually makes his job easier.

2024-12-19 02:03:09 +0000 UTCThe last thing I want when I'm travelling is to have to deal with someone at a counter asking me questions about what I'm doing. Just give me the coffee and sandwich and let me get on the flight bro. I've already had carry a bunch of luggage around, stand in a long line, be hassled by the TSA, and now I just want to chill until it's time to squeeze into my shitty seat for the next 8 hours. Just let me relax. Wynona needs to grow up and figure out their priorities beyond slanging coffee for a living and then complain that the system is keeping them down.

2024-12-17 21:36:43 +0000 UTCOh wow yes your original comment was so sophisticated of an attempt to dunk on me, I never realized until you pointed it out! Wow. Super smart of you. I believe I replied "ironic comment" because YOU trying to spin your false beliefs by claiming you believe facts was hilarious and ironic. Spreading ignorance and hate = speaking obvious facts. I dont know why people decided to redefine "speaking facts" with the words "ignorance and hate" but since youre using that definition I guess all good, so long as you know it translates to "speaking simple facts".
trythinking
2024-12-17 21:35:06 +0000 UTCI mean, your comment is totally irrelevant to the story. You just want to spread your ignorance and hate, for not clear purpose. BTW if it is perfectly clear what someone has said, but instead of supporting your argument you attack their grammar, it shows that your original argument wasn't strong to begin with. I think you may have missed the joke in my comment though. It's obvious that your critical thinking skills are quite poor, so you should 'trythinking' yourself ;)

2024-12-17 20:35:40 +0000 UTCPeople that work unskilled jobs still need to eat food and have shelter buckaroo. Now a days many of them even need to provide for a child they weren't allowed to abort. 2024-12-14 16:01:41 +0000 UTCI bet this pisses of some billionaire shadow members of the nwo/world economic forum. The out comes will be this: the corporations will give you a mediocre compensation that will satisfy just enough but will also kick the can further down the road, they begin to look like they are willing to work but they are simultaneously, waiting you guys out and then when you throw the towel in, they then will not hire new workers. They will probably market you a good reason for doing it which will resonate with some and divide others, starting another micro culture war that will no doubt become top 3 culture wars in no time (by 2030), finally direct the blame from the original focal point. This is the outcome of you vs corp, they can play the long game, but we all need to work.

2024-12-13 23:32:42 +0000 UTCI'm sorry, was it your dream as a child to be a Dunkin' employee (or any Corpo fast food establishment) when you grew up? Do you have ZERO ability to learn and train yourself to do anything besides server coffee? Theres so many Amazon and fast food workers upset at automation. Except when you ask them how they like the job, as they did in the video, they'll tell you that they hate it and that it sucks, and that the only good thing is the people they work with. So why are they fighting against automation? Because they actually want the job? Or because automation is taking unskilled jobs, and these employees are faced with the fact that they are unskilled and unmotivated to do any jobs that are above entry level ones?

2024-12-13 23:28:56 +0000 UTCFor me , ai can save people so much time they can afford to lose some customers to it — in some disciplines — for now at least. I met up with a guy to work on his logo and he told me he tried AI logo generators but didn’t like them. I would not hesitate AI for an asset for him — IE generic van image to mockup car decals. Whether thats leveraging your passions to become an illustrator, learning/creating a way to leverage your skills, etc. Thinking thats impossible is part of the mentality that will keep them working for near minimum wage forever.
Carlos
2024-12-13 18:43:33 +0000 UTCSo if entry-level jobs (+ benefits) go away there seems like a 0% chance that there won't be a rise in crime and violence. Support unions wherever they are left. 2024-12-12 06:51:15 +0000 UTCAlso, his point that for every job you lose to automation, you gain jobs on the other end is wrong. Automation only succeeds if it scales. Not only does it have to replace more jobs than it takes to create, but you create it once, and it can replace more and more jobs over time.

Perhaps with the encroachment of AI it could get more difficult. But if you are remotely good at marketing yourself, and you have talent and work ethic, you can definitely make a living doing it. You can become well off even. This person hopefully meets more people with different perspectives. Respect to Andrew for throwing them some tentative suggestions at the end there.

2024-12-10 00:32:06 +0000 UTCWhile I want to be understanding, I find it difficult to sympathize with these striking Dunkin' employees. Their presentation isn't helping the labor movement's cause. The shift toward AI and automation seems inevitable if both management and customers are open to it. Speaking as someone who frequents corporate fast-food chains like Dunkin', I'm indifferent between using a kiosk or interacting with staff – I just want my order to be accurate. Their argument about preserving the customer experience isn't persuasive to me. Additionally, having a self-proclaimed anarchist who shows no interest in workplace improvement and openly dislikes their job undermines their message. This is simply market evolution at work, much like how we didn't preserve horse-and-buggy manufacturing in the face of automobiles.

2024-12-09 17:07:14 +0000 UTCYou're not immune to helplessness my friend. Even skilled labor jobs are replaced in the name of efficiency. 20 years ago, data sorting was a "skilled labor" job that required a degree and now its entirely automated. People who spent 4 years studying, and countless hours sorting through boxes of xerox papers had to be retrained and relocated. Cutting Keys used to be "skilled labor". Shoemakers, metalsmiths, carpenters, the list goes on and on. The ruling class sees people as disposable and has a vested interest in keeping alive the narrative that "nobody wants to work anymore" because it keeps the working class fighting amongst ourselves rather than awakening to the reality of the problem. But hey, if shitting all over people less fortunate than yourself is your thing that's between you and god. Have fun being a miserable prick <3
Azrec
2024-12-09 14:00:46 +0000 UTCthe mentality of some of these people will never fail to make me laugh. throw any of them in a time machine and they wouldn’t survive in a single other generation. unskilled labor has never been better compensated than it is right now. if you don’t want to be automated, maybe learn a skill that is in demand that can’t be done by a robot. OR humanize your service to the point where you cannot be replaced. i couldn’t care less if i speak to a human while ordering a number 1 combo, and majority of the time the person taking my order doesn’t want to be talking to me either. seriously, i see why my generation gets clowned by everyone else. if this was ancient times, these types of people would probably complain about how hard it is to forage for food and just starve to death.

2024-12-08 03:27:15 +0000 UTCSad to see Winona has been so beaten down by the realities of modern living that being an illustrator feels so unachievable and non-viable. Living in a much smaller country than the US, the sense of hopelessness in the working class over there is palpable in clips like this; it's really sad. Everyone deserves a fair shot to do what they're passionate about but there are as many people in LA as there are in my entire country (of roughly the same landmass as the continental USA), there are simply not enough meaningful opportunities for that amount of people. Separating passion and work is a lovely sentiment but when you need to work 40+ hours a week to survive, spending time on your passion can start to sound exhausting pretty quickly

2024-12-07 19:06:44 +0000 UTCAll I read from this comment is complaining and not offering a solution. You even admit yourself there is no money to be made in making art so why risk your livelihoods to be a homeless artist? To that point also I am sure she has this job for one, to live, and two, to provide and income for her hobbies and things of interest. She also mentions at the end of the video how she is apart of a union so I would quite down about her not offering a solution. She is working class apart of a working class movement if anything she as more in common with you than any big wigged CEO. My great grandfather used to be a pump boy, had pension and everything, it was a simple and easy job though so did he not deserve it? Stop using the really lazy argument of "Just work harder" and pull your head out of you ass and realize people like Winona are on your team and the system is collapsing and failing.
Gaige Cooper
2024-12-07 18:52:20 +0000 UTCOk cool. I don't even disagree with your sentiment. But I think that's totally irrelevant to the point made in the video, which is if you're unhappy with your station in life maybe explore other opportunities or avenues to make money.

2024-12-07 18:46:08 +0000 UTCThat would be awesome if our system wasn't literally built on the back bone of greed and a piece of paper. You are not truly free when you do not know where your next meal is coming for or if you'll have enough hours to survive the next two weeks. When you are not free you are also creatively not free. I make music, is it my full time job? No, and it would be unrealistic for me to drop everything for it. Being an artist is an oxymoron in a capitalist society.
Gaige Cooper
2024-12-07 18:44:30 +0000 UTCI agree. I've heard it's extremely competitive as well. I'm not suggesting they should stop their job to become an artist. I'm saying if she's so unhappy with her state of life/income maybe she should entertain other ideas and see what that looks like

2024-12-07 17:24:23 +0000 UTCDavid, kind of feels like they were just trying to show what they're wearing. Trying to give you a stronger vibe of what kind of person they are. I didn't feel that bit was out of place at all... But that's just IMO

2024-12-07 17:24:03 +0000 UTCI hope she figures her stuff out... But shutting down any mention of doing something different and getting a career is really short sited

2024-12-07 08:15:24 +0000 UTCthis is really interesting to me as i live in australia and work at mcdonald’s. We’ve had self serve kiosk machines for 8+ years now depending on the state. The “goal” of the kiosks are to make the orders bigger, quicker and labour efficient. however there still is the same amount of crew on as there would be if we didn’t have those kiosks. depending on the store, you might be cutting a couple people max

2024-12-07 08:14:04 +0000 UTCThe first step out of a hole is often the most expensive one. That is the catch 22. It creates a working class - which are needed to keep the price of products low - for that of people of a higher class. There never really has been such a thing as racism per se, it's been classism under a different name. 'Sucking the blood of those less economically privileged'.

2024-12-07 07:58:24 +0000 UTCMaybe just let them be androgynous? You don't have to stick labels on people.

2024-12-07 06:58:49 +0000 UTCWinona sounds like the most entitled person ever. One hand, expects pension from a job that takes the lowest form of ability to do and yet hates the job. Why would anyone want to employee or purchase anything from you? I get it. I worked those jobs too. But if you’re working service jobs as a career that’s on you. You can move on to something else. Clearly though this person has no interest when confronted with this opportunity. Andrew basically asks/advises Winona to work as an artist which does not provide a lucrative income most of the time but at least you can try and do something that might bring you some joy. But no, like most people in this world Winona rejects this opportunity in favor of complaining and offering no solution.

2024-12-07 06:12:26 +0000 UTCKinda sounds like none of them actually understand what they're talking about. Every single one of them is completely self interested and ignorant of the more objective reality of the situation. Just a bunch of victims that are all convinced they have it worse and are entitled to equal outcomes.

2024-12-07 03:57:17 +0000 UTCIt’s crazy how out of touch some people can be, 7:50 wouldn’t mind starting a new job as a carpenter or plumber at 50$ an hour. Not even most engineers would start at that.

2024-12-07 03:48:55 +0000 UTCWe're living in a world where oligarchy is further gripping our necks, strangling the working class - yet you care about how someone is dressed. You've fallen for the grift my friend. Get your head out of the dirt.

2024-12-07 03:04:32 +0000 UTCIt’s pretty interesting how a person could have a mindset like that. I don’t understand it

2024-12-07 01:44:27 +0000 UTCApparently there IS some confusion here. This story (titled: "Dunkin' Donuts Workers Strike") is about Dunkin' Donuts workers who are going on strike. Hope that clears things up.
