5CAST #2 - opening reflections, Dear Kelly update, "Anti-ICE Rally" backlash

Comments

Forgive me for skipping parts of this, but pink Gucci sunglasses LA protester's voice was like nails on a chalkboard for me 😩

Pixx

Hey Andrew, HUGE fan. always seen you online but this recent return of Channel 5 has really won me over and I’ve been backlogging a lot of your content. Thanks for this coverage!!!!

OfficialHeir

these righteous people that deflect culpability of violence end up alienating others from their cause. they’re also pushing false or questionable narratives that Andrew addresses here. such a ridiculous position and attitude. viva mexico

Yanni P & Chissy D Eiffel Towering AOC til She's Not a Commie

I really enjoyed seeing your personal takes on what people were saying

Ryan Walker

I think I love the 5cast lol

Irvin

Really glad you've decided not to cover celebrity drama. Also just want to say that I always appreciate that you give background information on the topics you cover in these videos. Helps me understand the broader context of the situation. Love you, keep doing good journalism

Samuel Schindler

Don't worry much man about these guys lashing out about being white. Your heart and their heart are in the right place.

Ross Eppinette

Nitwit is an S-tier noun

Shawhin Layeghi

It depends, I'd say no, but you could say yes. You could take racism as the classical definition, prejudice on the grounds of race. Or you could take the modern definition, contributing to the systematic or societal oppression and suffering of marginalized races. I prefer the modern definition because racism against marginalized people is more harmful because it perpetuates marginalization. But eh. Feels weird to say, for example, Spanish people are not racist towards French people. People get really dogmatic about this shit though. Which is sad because both uses of the word are pretty useful

Shawhin Layeghi

I want to give you a big smooch big sloppy wet smooch this is so good

Adam Sandler

You are truly generous Andrew , you strengthened the argument of those attacking you!

Ernesto

Appreciate the takes, reflective of some of my own frustrations, and I appreciate the American history, that's useful information that I didn't have before this. This long form stuff is great Patreon content, hopefully not a massive time sink for you so you can still continue to privide the best of Channel 5 for free on YT. Thanks for the great work Channel 5 team.

Samuel Swinamer

i like when connect things to historic context, especially when it comes to north american history 🙏

Yacoub Q

Hell yeah. Celebrity nonsense is nonsense. Channel 5 knows wassup.

Gabriel Martinico

Great stuff. Your understanding seemingly without judgement mixed with critique and historical perspective is incredibly refreshing. Thank you!

Tony Schmidt

I like the rewatch of the ‘Anti-ICE rally’ video.

Adrian Millman

Andrew, you're the best. Thank you for what you do.

Julia M

This is like when you go to a party and are treated like shit and so shocked about it that you laugh and play along. Then when you get home you think of the best comebacks while shaking in the shower but no one will ever know except this time you have a podcast and can talk about it.

Bronos

This format is great for Patreon , I like the casual analysis and to see what your thought process is like for the channel and for the videos

Chuck

My chicano history class is really paying off right now

Nicholas Dipoalo

Hey Andrew, just want to express some gratitude for your news reporting and content creation these past few years. You touch on a lot of subjects that hit home for me, especially the ostracization that occurs in left wing spaces if you deviate from the accepted narrative. Not really feeling connected to the extreme left or extreme right can be pretty lonely. I believe the emotional challenges of being demonized by people who you once felt connected to plays a big role in suicide and violent actions, especially among men. I would love to do some investigative reporting into the connection between these things!

Luke

Yes! More of this. Really enjoy your commentary on your own video! I feel like this is the prefect type of content for Patreon.

Blake

incredible vid, articulates non partisan, real world, practical and ultimately humanist perspective. so much respect

Would it be fair to say those people were being racist towards Andrew?

We need to start producing the Precursor chemicals for the cartels in the US. Support American jobs! /s

Greg Johnson

Also, your take on the cartels is sobering. It's something that the left needs to hear if they ever want a chance or organizing.

B3RNi3

Thank god, please stay away from celebrity drama unless its REAL news (you know what that means).

B3RNi3

"BUT, dude you still get swayed by some of the leftist talking points, many of them you said that you know were wrong in retrospect. Nobody is cutting benefits and firing park rangers for no reason. They are trying to identify like a thousand social security recipients who are over age 100. Thats not cutting benefits, thats finding fraud and waste." This is completely untrue and has been debunked by multiple sources. People that are in the social security database that are over 150 years old is a data anomaly where there isn't enough information about that individuals death and individuals are flagged once they reach 115+ years old, payments to stop. There is also a behavior with COBOL where if their birthday is missing or incomplete the default value is filled with May 20, 1875. Now I am not saying that there hasn't been anyone in history to fraud this system but it's not as large scale as the nitwits of DOGE would like you to believe.

kasten

We need a shen yun vid

Nadir

Glad you mentioned hiring more immigration judges and putting more money into immigration court system. One thing you are incorrect about is asylum seekers being required to stay in Mexico to pursue their asylum case up until the Biden admin. Refugee admissions have always existed, allowing asylum applicants to pursue their case in the US rather than from across the border. Also, you should 100% explore Shen Yun. There's an interesting connection between Shen Yun, asylum, and the falun gong.

Mark Anderson

do more of these!!!

Lrthegod

In my opinion, it's a shame Andrew and the Channel 5 team are getting any backlash for the anti-ice rally video. I thought that it was well made with a lot of information and opinions from all kinds of people. I still respect the anti-ice rally protesters for taking any action to voice their opinions, and I do not think it's their fault they don't have any talking points about the cartels. It's a shame though, because I believe the solution to the cartels' smuggling situation is to improve the immigration process and document immigrants. Regarding the drug smuggling, I also think having addiction centers where people who are drug addicts can safely use would also hurt the cartel's ability to make money. Obviously, I don't think these two acts alone would solve the problem, but it might make an impact. I think there are other problems in the USA right now that are creating addicts.

Deifnas

Tyler Barton

I wouldn’t mind if you did commentary on all the new releases. A little context and fact checking gives the report way different vibes. BTS stuff/ extended cuts is part of the most of the reason I’m here. Reminds me of the dear Kelly screening.

Joseph H Craft

This was a fantastic format that was delivered very well and very real. I cant wait for more

Shoogazer

Hey man love your work. Need more like you. Keep on showing what the people on the ground are actually like. Never knew the need before I found you my guy.

Michael Monette

I am definitely anti-leftist and pro Trump, but I always appreciate that you show all sides and show the crazies that are on either side of issues. I always push back on people who comment how Channel 5 is liberal exclusively and people ask “why are you watching this channel then if you like Trump”….because Channel 5 does good content! And it is way more neutral than anything that shows leftist ideals. Usually the left only stick to their given script, which we know happens because we now know they pay all these leftist influencers and give them talking points that match the leftist mainstream news cycles. BUT, dude you still get swayed by some of the leftist talking points, many of them you said that you know were wrong in retrospect. Nobody is cutting benefits and firing park rangers for no reason. They are trying to identify like a thousand social security recipients who are over age 100. Thats not cutting benefits, thats finding fraud and waste.

trythinking

A fun non-serious fact I learned about andrew is that despite being a famous youtube figure he still won't pay for youtube premium :D

Michael

The part at 36:13 is soo important. I wish that segment was a short and every left-leaning person in the US could be forced to watch it. If you don't follow the left script, the judgment is palpable. It absolutely drives people to the right.

Michael

So proud of your arc Andrew. #C54L

WetFlapjacks

I learn so much with every video. Andrew does something so fucking important. Speaking as someone who is a leftist, you’re clearly illustrating the sheer amount of important grey area there is between the left and the right. We’re all losing to the wealthy because all we think is that if you’re not for one side—you’re for the other. Thanks for exploring the grey area 🤝 TAX WEALTH NOT WORK

Very great vid! I can’t imagine all weekly vids can include this level of explanation and detail but I’m excited to see the next few week’s installments now. Wasn’t a fan of last week’s episode and deeply respect your open ear and commitment to change.

Niklas Lang

Love the improvement from the first video to the second. Great pivot. One suggestion: could be cool to have your live-reaction cam in 5cast studio overlayed in the corner while you are reviewing previous footage. Love the director's commentary on the new videos though! So interesting to learn more context and see behind the scenes.

swellpunk

love this dude keep it up!

I didn't understand shit from the first episode, no idea about celebrities 😅. Second ep is lit! Keep it up! Cheers from australia 🦘

Alex Llewellyn

Thank you Andrew. I really appreciated your honesty and insight about how you interviewed and edited the anti-ICE raid video. As always, I think you are the master of making me feel great empathy for your subjects who are so unlike me. That empathy persists even when I disagree with them - you still let the humanity comes through.

Another difference between Spanish colonization and British colonization was segregation. Spanish colonists would have children (sometimes consensual though not always) with Indigenous and African people which created a caste system. People of European descent were at the top of this system and the people of color were below them depending on each mix. British colonists did not encourage race mixing. It would happen occasionally but it was far less common. They preferred segregation.

Russell Ramirez

is it just me or is andrew's camera just slightly out of focus? like it his shirt is sharp af but then his face is a tiny bit blurred. throws me off. content-wise amazing stuff bra

Rafael

Yeah, its true that most people r focusing on the wrong things ; celebrity drama, gossip, etc. but, hopefully that small % that doesnt focus solely on it, understand that and choose to financially back these channels like yours (and the Majority Report*) that decide to do the right thing rather than taking the easy grifty way.

Jonah Jameson

This is amazing so far, love how real youre being without coming off as pretentious like most.

Jonah Jameson

congrats on some sober time dude. check out alcoholics anonymous if you haven’t already. it’s works if u work it

Thanks Andrew for sharing more of your perspective. This is how minds come together. I did have trouble finding credible sources on the Hanhong and Wuhan connection. I appreciate your journalistic curiosity very much, and know you're someone who cares about integrity - so if you have links or references I'd love to read further.

Mike Amorello

Glad to see Andrew finished his DEI course

Adam Dev

Much better

Donald

Also this is incredible.

Gotta make the connection that they can’t have it both ways. Are the people fleeing, fleeing from something that horrifically terrible or are the cartels “just doing what they have to do”. It’s one of 4 that just totally dismantle the leg they are trying to stand on. It’s like Slavoj Žižek says “the liberals are the saddest ones. Because If they put their stupid ideals out of the way. They could actually make a change.” Thats a very rough paraphrasing but you get it.

Al

Loving these 5 Cast videos! Thank you for your reporting Channel 5 Team! I think how you broke down your previous video was really informative and you guys are truly the best journalists out there, thank you for all that you guys do! Looking forward to the next 5 Cast Vid

Oscar Romero

Good shit

Angel Gomez

I'm sorry but we have to get rid of this wokescolding shit on the left before the next election. If you are not for inclusion (meaning white men), then you are not moving the left forward and will continue to lose to fascists that promise white men their return to dominance in society. It's that simple.

Wiley H

Fuck the haters, someone has to cut through the fog around us all & these videos help that! Channel 5!

CosmicTrashPanda

Andrew, if you wanted to make another cartel piece you should have titled it as such. It's sad to see the sensationalist direction channel 5 is taking.

Joshua Duplaa

where does one get that shirt, that shits fire

Forest Mickelsen

Your insight at 38 minutes in is spot on. I think destiny or some other online streamer put it similarly, essentially the left will drop you if you disagree on a single point but agree on 99 others while the right will gladly take you in if you agree on a single point and disagree on the others. I find myself coming back to the Moral Foundations Theory for the explanation of this (and explanation of most of the explanations of right/left). I think the left (with moral emphasis on fairness) are theory based on their idea of a perfect worldview that they struggle to imagine accepting someone with what they view as a stain in their beliefs (even if just on a single point) because they believe they have the moral high ground on those points, and they value justice/fairness so feel betrayed if you disagree (even on a single point). At the same time, the right, who care about loyalty look for a single common ground item and say "hey brother, join up" and are able to completely ignore other views because if you join their team they have a number and one more person who agrees on a single point they just brush the other stuff off. Obviously it is not this black/white, but I find your insight into it to be pointing all of this out in a more succinct way. Thanks for all you do, love seeing your perspective. Don't stop.

Matt M

I loved hearing your genuine thoughts about the anti ice organizers. I'm also very sympathetic to their views and wanted to support them fully but their disrespect of the Caucasian folk and lack of nuance can be so irritating. It felt like an honest portrait, and thank you for doing the tough work of calling out this bs. CHANNEL 5 WORLDWIDE 🌐

Alex Murray

And yes race is a social construct that is meant to divide us, but many people's lived experiences force them to engage with how they are racialized. Some people have had their entire cultures stripped from them, so they have had to reconstruct/rebirth their culture, and may identify with how they are racialized (think black pride). This isn't the same as "white pride" because white folks have the privilege of knowing their countries of origin. It's perfectly fine to have Irish pride or be proud of having rich Polish roots, but whiteness is a lie. It's actually stripped a lot of folks racialized as white of their own damn cultures as well. Me included!

Travis

While we can probably agree that wealth is privilege and that class disparity is the main division in this country, being racialized as "white" the majority of the time puts you in a more privileged position. Cops are way more likely to arrest and/or brutalize someone who is racialized as black or brown than someone who's white, no matter their class status. It's generally more difficult to get mortgages as a black or brown person. Doctors have this racist notion that people with brown eyes or skin feel less pain, black mothers have a significantly higher rate of infant mortality than white folks of the same class status. Obviously the poorer you are, no matter what you will be less privileged. Perceived race does have a lot to do with this as well. The way one is criminalized and treated changes drastically based on how law enforcement and the medical industry racializes a person.

Travis

Your coverage is always a breath of fresh air. I know it doesn't it need to be said, but.... keep doing your thing!!! You're certified in every way.

Max

Noob question here: Is there a Channel 5 discord for patreon and if so, how do I get in? Prob. some obvious shit, but I am pretty slow...

I'm so down for these director's cut versions of the interviews/reporting. It ads a whole new perspective for me; and highlighted several things I didn't even consider.

cool shit cuh. my first channel 5 video was abt gentrification on mexico city n i got ur patreon cz of this anti ice rally stuff. yr videos on mexico are pretty sick and im saying this in a biased way cz mexico and esp mexico city are lit asf!!!! but i also deeply appreciate the moments u captured on borders and immigration shit it shows mexico in a more complex way and not in a yellow breaking bad filtered way. thats the mexico i know cz i visit my fam there annually n shi so i see effects on both sides of da americas...huge fan of Mexican and American patriotism boiiii

Yes sirrrr

Hugo Villa

Hey dude thanks for putting this out and switchin up after feedback. You're fighting the good fight! I would have still watched the 5cast either way but that's dope you read comments and put up clips and decided to stay true to yourself. You have a great way of explaining complex topics. Lookin forward to what you come out with down the line. Stay up big dawg

Love this format. Id watch a break down like this of every video.

L

wealth gives you privilege. race is a social construct and an excuse to isolate groups of people. and you know what else has roots (in this case tubers) in the soil, potatoes which was the primary source of nourishment for irish folk prior to the great famine. english blokes refused to aid in this crisis due to their perception of ireland, as an inept group of people despite sending their agricultural products to england. perhaps most people do not understand the treasure that is the unseasoned potato. it was a breaking point for the irish to escape to "the land of the free" , despite the vehement discrimination they would be faced with upon arrival, and assist in constructing the modern world today. it does not matter what shade of wheat you are, each person is steeped in a "culture" that has contributed to the melting pot that is america. cheers channel 5 for the grand work!

irishmutt

Thank you for your integrity and elaborating on the context of your coverage. Keep it up!

I'd watch this instead of the Daily show & Jon Oliver

This is so much better love the commentary

Huge improvement over e1. Good job Andrew.

My grandma liked the first episode she said it was funny

ILoveMyDogPIckles

Really appreciate the behind the scenes look. I'd say just tighten up the video a bit. Edits could be improved so there's not much fluff in between your talking points and the source video... Might I suggest an ad blocker?

Alex

This is miles better than the first 5cast, love that we are getting more patreon exclusive content too!

Avery Parker

another 5CAST banger, didnt even feel like an hour went by, crazy. Great balance, continue being yourself <3

Kody

Hey I'm sure you've considered it but I'd love to buy a dvd/blu-ray of Dear Kelly because the people I want to watch it don't pay for any streaming service at all so it'd be the only way they'd watch it. Thanks a ton team

Ben Masters

I think the guy who was talking about the richness of his culture was saying that you benefit from colonization. Sure your ancestors were Irish, but we live in a country where whiteness and proximity to it give you privilege. He said that you don't know about tacos, not literally meaning your mom never made tacos, but that this is his daily lived experience, he is steeped in a culture which has roots in the soil and the land.

Travis

I think the way you address fentanyl is misguided. Yes, many people get laced and/or OD, yes, many people are addicted. But taking out fentanyl won't end our problems. People are still gonna do drugs, people are still gonna be in awful psychological circumstances. People will still find other really potent drugs. People will still do opioids. Suppliers and dealers will still lace shit for profit. With addiction, shit, even if all we had was alcohol and cigs, we'd still have people intoxicated out of their minds on the street, lying in their own fluids, drinking till they die. Taking out the cartel would leave a vacuum that will be filled by clandestine labs in the US, China, god knows who/where. Even if it doesn't get replaced by another giant entity, people will still do drugs and OD and all that. I think the solution is massive scale programs: free drug testing facilities, safe-injection sites, needle pipe and narcan distribution, housing programs, cheap healthcare including therapy, and decriminalization. Won't solve addiction but will offset a ton of the negative consequences, especially overdose deaths. Ok these would be massive changes in our society. Almost impossible to imagine this shit on a country wide scale. Fair. What I wanna say is that fent isn't the problem. I don't blame you or anyone for being so angry at fent. It's a result of personal pain from losing people. and from news stories in a feedback echo chamber with a particular narrative (Sacchler family -> opiate addicts -> fentanyl enters –> fentanyl crisis). Which is partially true but it misses the larger problems at hand

Shawhin Layeghi

So sick, make this a normal thing if you have time. This is rad.

Zac

Worth the watch. This is banging

Sara

Really dig this one 🫡

Jeff Johns

Tight and loose format. I think yall kinda nailed it

I really like the deep dives, please continue being extra. The frenetic energy in the first one was fun but it did have a very pilot feel. This one's better, keep going.

This one was great, love hearing the long-form behind the scenes of the public stuff. Congrats on your sobriety! I've had some nice long sober streaks and I love how life feels when you're like several weeks sober and exercising regularly

Andrew, make an exception and talk about Shane Victorino getting thrown out from the outfield by the home plate ump for arguing balls and strikes?

DW

nice follow-up Andrew! With regards to the Anti-ICE video responses: sorry, but there's no two ways about it, the people you interviewed were cringe. You and your team didn't "make them look bad" they did that themselves. And honestly as someone sympathetic to what they were trying to do I had so much second-hand embarrassment. As an organizer if you don't want your shit to look foolish then don't say foolish shit; really nail down what you're advocating for and know what the fuck you're talking about!

Alyn

Omg shen yun. That one’s gonna be a trip

C L

The decision to not do celebrity drama is awesome, thanks

Ernie Rowoldt

Yeah.. No kidding about Jill Stein. She is straight up a Russian asset. Every time she opens her mouth, diarrhea spews forth and the stench cannot ever be fully cleansed. The best we can all do is try to forget she and the Green Party exist. Mock them into oblivion if forced to engage. Edit: She makes Trump look like a patriotic, loving American Edit2: fuck jill stein

Great pivot man, I think all your reflections are awesome and align to the type of content I'm keen to watch from you, excited to see where these go

So happy for the long form! Glad you kept with it, saw a lot of hate on the first one which I didn't think was totally justified, especially being the first episode of a series, but happy to see an openness to constructive criticism anyways!

Gonna be honest read the 5cast as something else lol
