Thank you for being so multifaceted in your coverage. This one hits close to home. I hope ya’ll continue to soar.

The asylum seeking process is a result of a federal law that was put in the 1980s!! It is not a “lax joe Biden policy”. Joe Biden tried to alter the process with an immigration bill during his time in office but trump told republicans to block the BILL!!! During the trump administration he put in the MPP bill which forced asylum seekers to remain in Mexico in dangerous conditions. Biden removed this which allowed them to stay in the US LEGALLY!!!. If you got into the country via asylum you are not illegal and are permitted to stay until your case is heard! However the asylum process is slow and inefficient. This is not BIDEN or TRUMPS fault but when BIDEN tried to fix it via a bill TRUMP got republicans to BLOCK IT!

22:36 They in fact ARE getting rounded up WITHOUT due process and deported, judge shopping ruins any semblance of legitimate asylum hearings - migrants that do see a judge will frequently be shipped to Louisiana to a judge that favors ICE 100%. I don't know why the person that runs the shelter isn't aware of that. Unless I misunderstood his intent and he meant the opposite

What is the guy at 2:31 talking about with 2000 deaths per week for 600 weeks? That's like 1.2 million dead in 12 years, not true right? Or is he just crazy

flaxweed

This was actually a really good rundown. Thanks Channel 5

#1 - All gas, no breaks lives forever in my head #2 - I am a Canadian and believe you are the best thing in Journalism since Hunter S Thompson. There are so many Fundamental problems with what is happening on all fronts (within the western hemisphere) and for you to find every hint of positivity between each topic you post, I think for some small second that we can make it through. Fuck the Western hemisphere, you even cover the shit behind the iron curtain. Regardless, this story will only progress and become the bain of how our countries survive/operate without investing in youth or reliable education. Why are there buttholes from Mizzu (male butthole) but no posts about how much you fuck with Canada? There are more pressing issues on these borders than these obese brown chocolate stars south of the mud line. Find something that brings North AND South together again!

Ruben Garcia was in fact very knowledgeable. He made very great points and answered them with no hesitation. As always thank you Andrew & Channel 5 for all that you guys do.

This was so enlightening. Channel Five is an inspiration. The only thing I object to is the lack of mentioning the US (also EU) sanctions on Venezuela in 2017 and 2019, and how this contributed to the migrant crisis there. I understand that Chavismo was a failed experiment and the reliance on oil and overspending despite economic downturn was the main cause, but Trump's sanctions did exacerbate the problem. Additionally, it lead to Venezuela relying on outside actors like China, Russia, and Iran. Simply showing cuts of Chavez and Maduro seems to understate the US influence on the migrant crisis there. Not saying the US was the primary cause, but I felt it should be mentioned.

I volunteered at the Annunciation House in 2019 after the first migrant caravan during Trump's last presidency. I was personally shocked to see during the time that as an Mexican-American that I was expecting mostly Mexican migrants. But I only encountered one Mexican family, while also meeting people from Russia to Brazil. I personally got to see many families try to use their children born in the USA, but used their children to make the journey up north through Mexico. I remember speaking to an Honduran family, with their son that they migrated knowing full english as he grew up in New York. It was eye-opening that the migrants were truly trying to game the system, and then try to seek asylum. But over the years I came to the conclusion that we should not be shaming families that want to cross for better economic opportunities, and if they are lying in their asylum process that they should not even have the ability to have to do that and just be honest for their intentions. And I am sure there were also people that did in fact struggle with political or cartel violence from their countries, and asylum should definitely be used for that. Annunciation House were helping them not necessarily gaming the system, but they are doing the right thing with treating these people with respect besides our failing government. We fed them, gave them a place to stay, and drove them to the airport or train/bus stop to get taken to whatever relative they have in the country. It is really frustrating that with the stop of asylum appeals and trying to stop all immigration that Trump is not even going to try to change our immigration system, so we will be right back here again soon. Even with old undocumented immigrants, especially people I grew up with (DACA recipients), their lives are stuck in hold it feels like. They are US citizens without their papers, they are active members of society, and it hurts to see that they might be sent back to Mexico where they know no one. Annunciation House and people like Ruben Garcia are people that actually really care, and I am glad as a Catholic organization that they actually act out what our faith is while other Catholic Bishops with online presence choose to ignore this human right crises because of fear of their politically right base.

I wish the Rubin Garcia interview was public so I could send it to some MAGA acquaintances. This perspective directly addresses many of the problems with the current political agendas on both sides.

hey! im not on much social media so I do tend to let all my thoughts out in Patreon comment sections. to answer ur question, extra judicial punishment against a large group of people as a scapegoat for crime or other political issues w/n a country tends to be looked back on very negatively, whether that's ww1 ottoman empire, ww2 germany, or one of the other many examples throughout history. i think conflating the average immigrant with dangerous drug cartels and using that rhetoric to justify a general disdain for immigrants, especially from latam, is not going to be a good look for us now or in the future, especially now that mass deportations to unsavory prison camps are underway. it is going to be very interesting to see how the degradation of due process rights for immigrants will impact first amendment and due process rights for citizens— we are witnessing a major overton window shift away from "innocent until proven guilty" and "censorship is bad" toward "if the government says you are a terrorist or gang member they can effectively disappear you extrajudiciously" and "censorship is good as long as it is in the interest of the US military/government." all of that is very, very politically interesting and we are already witnessing the law of the US be used and interpreted in ways it never has before. All of that has so many implications in, not only American life, but in the global status quo at this point that I think it is/will be a super defining issue of our time.

soph

Hmm, could be. But I understood it as such: with guns, we're willing to say that there's no evil gun, that the murder is caused by a human not by the tool they use. With drugs, when something goes wrong (addiction or OD) we blame the tool itself, rather than what the tool is serving. Interesting point and I agree. Like how 2A'ers blame mental illness and not guns, I think the same applies to drugs – drugs aren't killing people; homelessness, depression, poverty, illness, lack of services, and ignorance are.

Shawhin Layeghi

Yo I see you in every comment section so wassup. What historical precedent do u mean? Why do you think this will be so defining?

Shawhin Layeghi

Man, Ruben Garcia sounds exactly like Noam Chomsky.

B3RNi3

It’s a little hard to hear Ruben Garcia, once the background track was removed I could hear it better. Great piece, I learned a lot.

This is next on my Queue, just saw the Anti -ICE rally vid went up on YT. Recently found out about an illegal crematorium found in Teuchitlan, Jalisco, connected to the disappearance of 400 people. (*Correct me if im wrong, but i believe these 400 people are the result of culling during the Cartel's process of kidnapping common Mexican citizens, and threatening to kill their families, with the end result being, to turn them into hitmen or Sicarios) There were ashes/bones/clothing found at the scene by a group of local mothers and others calling themselves "Guerreros Buscadores de Jalisco" AFTER the State Attorney of Jalisco, Salvador Gonzalez, reported that after searching, they found nothing.. This was brought up to my attention because of an altar in Mexico City where they lit 400 candles in 400 shoes to represent the missing family members. It'd be cool to see more stories like these. Recently had an argument where I honestly wasnt sure if i was right to stand where i did; I have been 100% against the US going into Mexico to put an end to the cartels because its not their country and shouldnt be allowed to meddle. "Sovereignty" (the authority of a state to govern itself) as the Mexican President puts it. But it's been brought up to my attention that the Mexican Goverment might be using sovereignty as straw man argument; because of the fact the Mexican government has been working along side the cartels. With the past Mexican president, Lopez Obrador making sure to make a public statement, saying that the Mexican government had nothing to do with the detainment of 'El Mayo.' Im a normal person, born in Mexico, now living in the US. and Channel 5 just inspires me to keep informed and to simply look out for one another. Much love & keep up the good work everyone.

jesse merkelson

Fantastic journalism guys. Keep up the good work. I seriously appreciate the levels you guys go to to get the facts. That's sadly the exception in normal media today.

David A

I truly believe based on historical precedent that this issue is going to be the most defining one of the US in our time. Thank you to everyone at C5 for your commitment to covering this issue and giving a voice to immigrants and native peoples alike on the issues that affect them. I also want to say a huge THANK YOU for drawing a distinction between individual immigrants/immigrant families and drug cartels. We DO need to solve a lot of serious issues with cartels/mafia violence on both sides of the US border, but scapegoating random immigrant families is certainly not the solution.

Let's goooo Channel Cinco!!!

Kimi

Im Pooping. 💩

Loop scoop pooper

amazing work

Ruben Garcia

Thank you Andrew and Channel 5 team. I appreciate the way you lead with compassion for the challenges facing the migrands, and also accept the real challenges and threats that America faces due to immigration. Fuck fentanyl.

Henry G

OG made a good point about the guns and Purdue pharma. Think he wasn’t saying that Purdue shouldn’t be blamed but that when it comes to one issue Americans find it easier to go after everyone involved including the manufacturers, producers, sellers, etc. when it comes to guns it’s like we go after the corner dealer and that’s it

Theo Hinson

Thank you for your videos Channel 5 Team, you guys are the top tier journalists our country needs

Oscar Romero

This really gave me a whole new perspective. I truly appreciate your boots on the ground approach and always bringing the facts and views from both sides.
