Biden's Apology to Native Americans (Full Episode)

Hey guys,

Here's our coverage of President Biden's formal apology for the federal government's Indian Residential School Program, a cultural assimilation program implemented from 1879 to 1978. The apology was delivered on the Gila River Reservation just south of Phoenix a week before Election Day.

Our main host for this episode is friend-of-the-show Jaque Fragua, a native artist from the Pueblo of Jemez tribe in New Mexico, who spoke to enthusiastic attendees, tribal leaders, and pro-Palestine demonstrators who crashed the event. The episode also features an interview with an elder from the Navajo Nation who attended federal boarding school in the 1950s, conducted by Andrew.

Shout-out to Jaque for getting this done and we plan to continue our Native coverage indefinitely..

Very great video on the coverage of all native tribes. I just hated that a different protest group had to interject on a important day for native people and make it about them. It would be like talking about your broken leg during a baby shower or wedding. Very rude for everyone involved

Chiefahleaf

The moment when you asked her grandmother's name was so wonderful to watch. You could see from her smile how meaningful that was.

Brooke Terry

Great video, the included context is so important

Marshall Bender

This was so good. Thanks so much for coveing this! I wanna see more from Jaque Fragua!

Most Mexicans are not indigenous. Mexico is a settler colonial state. Chicanismo is white supremacy

Kenneth Baker

Mexicans especially from the North and Chicanos in general have a very hard time admitting their indigenous heritage because of White supremacy and colonialism. Colorism is very prevalent in Mexican culture.

this guy saw a reddit post once

Andrew, man. look up the keywords "right to repair john deere" and throw that hoody in the trash. OR... maybe a some video report on that shit they do? peace

Ajfel

The government is just trying to go in chronological order with their apologies.

Tyler

Amazing video Andrew and channel 5 crew!!!

Ryese

Yall should cover Armenia as well, man.

Kyle Chennault

Yeah fair enough, definitely not trying to defend Biden here, and yeah it's ridiculous he can't spend an hour or so to meet with these people, never-mind 30 seconds.

Apologies for what ended up being a long response. I'll push back on a few things: I think the phrase "treated poorly by people who came later on" is a vague understatement. Change "treated poorly" to "discriminated against as an inferior race" and "people who came later on" to "the US government", and we get closer to the heart of the issue. Of course they weren't a single, homogeneous people, I didn't suggest that. They were a collection of tribal nations, each with their own distinct social and political structures. Yes, occasionally they did go to war with each other, and yes occasionally they did enter into power struggles over territory. But it was not "just as brutal", not even close. In the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries, everywhere that white Europeans landed in the "undiscovered" world, they brought with them a brutality and a blood-lust that shocked the native people. Here's one historical example: Myles Standish was an English military officer who was hired by the Pilgrims, and he sailed with them on the Mayflower for Plymouth. In the first year of the colony's existence there were some tense interactions with the native people, but the colonists built relationships with local tribes and peace treaties were signed. Things were going well, until... Myles heard a rumor that a certain tribe was planning to attack a new colony just north of Plymouth, so he organized a militia to go and defend it. When no threat appeared, Standish decided to take matters into his own hands. He invited a few military leaders from the Massachusett tribe to dinner, and while they were eating, Standish's men locked the doors and executed the natives. All the tribes that had been previously aligned with the people of Plymouth were shocked and horrified by what they saw as a completely unprecedented and brutal attack. They fled their villages and moved to put some distance between them and the colonists, and the relationship between English settlers and native peoples was forever changed. They were the ones disgusted by our brutality. Sorry, I didn't mean to write an essay, but I think the idea that pre-colonial America was a brutal place where people were already slaughtering each other is not entirely true, and ultimately the future horrors they would have to suffer at the hands of our government go beyond anything that was happening on the continent before.

this was beautifully done, thank you for giving us ndns a platform, ahiiyeh

Yadira

South Dakota Reppin! Thank you to these strong brave women spotlighting these hard subjects happening in the 605.

Native tribes were indeed treated poorly by people who came later on. But its important to remember that those natives also came here from foreign lands. And there were many tribes, not just one homogenous group called "native americans", and those tribes slaughtered each other for the entire time until new settlers came in. It is not like it was all peace and love until white people came here. It was just as brutal.

trythinking

Awesome video I really enjoy when you mention historic connections to modern day issues.

Robert

Bah, excuses. Those ladies who traveled to meet with Biden are elders too, and didnt travel to AZ on AirForce. Trump stayed up pretty late last night for a 78 year old.

Zachary Nagle

Remember, we are dealing with some elderly men. I imagine a younger Biden would have worked the room, embracing everyone - that was his whole political identity. Just too old to do the job, and now the other elderly white guy gets his seat.

Lori Walking Eagle poses an interesting question about "sovereignty". I suppose being a "Sovereign Nation" implies dominion over one's homeland, complete authority within their borders - and of course that's not the case on the reservation. The native peoples did not choose this land, they were moved here by force or otherwise eliminated in acts of brutality, all sanctioned by the US gvt. Then the buffalo were killed, then the people starved and their children were taken, and when they danced and cried too loud they were threatened with guns. Their entire way of life was interrupted. Still the family endures, traditions continue, a legacy survives. And still the United States has a responsibility to these people, and the reservations fall short. What if the tribal nations had statehood, or something like it? Representatives in congress, votes in the electoral college, and an equitable share of the resources allotted to all states? Feels like an acknowledgment of their right to self governance, and also a step towards fair reparations.

DontGetExcitedDude

the Unicorn metaphor at the end was a perfect way to describe native sovereignty. fantastic video as always!

Ryan Jordan

What’s the name of the movie/show used in the beginning with what looks like Keith Carradine?

Rib clone

Thank you for using an indigenous voice to tell indigenous stories 🖤

Maya Gayler

Good watch, very interesting report. People’s actions are the truth, not their words. It’s very rude to schedule 30 seconds with the tribal leaders (who traveled very far), and then cancel on them.

Zachary Nagle

Trump is more lenient on Israeli aggression than Harris. Both support genocide. Feel free to search something like 'trump iran israel' to see israeli news outlets underscoring how a Trump victory would lead to more israeli aggression. Be honest with yourself. Neither candidate will bring peace, and both support the American empire.

Niklas Lang

As if they got medals for their massacre

Hope Shrives

I guess that think he should have just froze up and said nothing, which would have taken away the whole point of the ceremony. Instead, he chose to not ridicule her.

Bobby Guilly

Crazy how that lady said she’s not indigenous and then calls herself Chicano. Chicanismo is a white supremacist settler ideology very similar to zionism

Kenneth Baker

The protestors colonizing the apology lol.

Carlos

Shes not implying one atrocity cancels out another one shes protesting the shameless act of apologizing for one atrocity to buy good faith for the one your administration is currently participating in

Michael Pelletier

Holy shit I think leonard pelletier is a relative lol crazy

Michael Pelletier

“I never forgot my grandmothers name… it was fat lady” Okay… kind of a weird direction for that sentimental moment to go. My great grandmother was a member of a Navajo tribe but our family doesn’t have much info on it.

Michael Pelletier

Two things that caught me off-guard: the Navajo elder conversation ending with "fat lady" and the pro-Pal demonstrator saying "A-Rab"

DW

Thank you for covering this! Important stuff that not enough media talks about

The Ders

I am a very happy patron

Eric Piggot

Sick what’s the name?

Channel 5

I understand not wanting to support Israel at this point its not longer defending themselves. But lady its not like one atrocity cancels out another one. Realistically the biden admin probably wanted to do things sooner but unfortunately they had to look at the bigger picture and focus elsewhere. Its a good start that they apologized but its going to take decades for the government to try to make things right. Especially since changes of presidents can delay the process.

Joseph Meyer

crazy how the lady doesnt want war but doesnt want trump who didnt want war but doesnt like biden who wants war wtf lady you dont have to be a dem

Ty B

Piano is a bit loud at 12:42 amazing coverage amidst this election shit, great work

Babbitt

Thank you for your commitment and faithfulness. What is the name of your tribe?

Rowan Gaelen

Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't, right? How would you prefer he have handled it?

Eric Burbeck

Dude that part of Biden's speech at 7:00 is Orwellian as hell !! He says "Let her talk" knowing DAMN WELL things are set up so she's automatically getting escorted off premises. And when she is it doesn't bother him. Just trying to make himself look good lmaoooo

cloudy

Why did that squad car pull up at 12:42?? Lol

cloudy

That does sound pretty cool. Plus it sounds like a job that comes with a serious sense of gratification, and that's hard to find. Appreciate the work you're doing.

bigchiefcrazysmoke

how long do you think joe had to rehearse that speech for

avery

I haven’t even watched it yet, but I am SO excited that someone I like is actually going to be covering native news. I live on my Rez, work for my tribe, essentially in a vacuum… it’s crazy to me all the amazing things we do and hardly any of my state even realizes we exist… aside from our casino. We’re cleaning the Willamette, restoring salmon and lamprey populations, doing prescribed burns, and that’s just the surface of our environmental efforts. We’ve revitalized lost languages, we have our own fashion, and idk… we’re just pretty cool. lol. You think more people would be interested in the first people.

Shayla

11:13 didnt expect Fousey lol, fousey on 25% speed

Brad

Thank you, good work

Micheal

Well done! I like that you covered a lot of different perspectives and feelings from the community.

Sebastian

Fucked up history. Thank you for sharing this.
