Philly Streets (Part 4/4)
Added 2023-12-24 21:59:11 +0000 UTCHere's our final installment of 'Philly Streets,' which covers late-stage history, from the 1970s until now, with particular emphasis on the ongoing gentrification of North-Central Philly as a result of Temple University and its shell companies. We also speak to a pair of homeless women living together on K&A.
I hope you guys liked this series. I'm going to move on from drug/homeless coverage for a bit to focus on the ongoing migrant crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border.
If I'd estimate, I say that we'll drop a modified version of 'Philly Streets' on YouTube in mid-January .. so I'm curious - what parts did you guys like from this series? Was there any angles you think I forgot to cover? All of this feedback from you guys would be really helpful, because I want to make the final YouTube cut as impactful as possible.
Thanks for all your support. Don't shoot Tranq. Zines are on the way if you ordered one. Every single copy that was ordered was also signed by me!
Big Love,
Andrew C
P.S. - Big year ahead. Lotta new videos and other .. stuff .. dropping. I can't say much more, just trust that your support throughout 2023 will be rewarded tenfold.

2024-10-13 22:40:12 +0000 UTCNo it erases the culture that was there before and replaces it with the culture of the rich. That’s not moving culture forward, it’s homogenizing culture and removing places for the under represented to live and develop their own identities. How do rich people blend with a culture that was developed and maintained by people who are no longer there?

2024-04-01 01:31:26 +0000 UTCYeah it does. We spend more on Ukraine than our domestic problems. Just because you’re indoctrinated to believe that it’s our responsibility to police the world, doesn’t mean that everybody needs to believe that, how can you see this footage and think we’re doing enough?
Bigdickbandit
2024-04-01 01:28:56 +0000 UTCYou don’t get the point, do you? Money is basically fictional. The US Government doesn’t have the money for Ukraine. They created it. They could create funds to tackle this issue just the same way. It’s a matter of will, not ability.

2024-02-01 22:54:58 +0000 UTCThere isn't a single entity to blame for this problem. What we're seeing here is the result of capitalism, greed, racism, mental illness, poverty, lack of housing, lack of decent-paying work, etc. We as a nation can only keep applying bandaids to temporarily solve issues for so long before something disastrous occurs.

2024-01-27 00:14:28 +0000 UTCThe ice cream truck does put the last dark layer of sugar coated capitalism on top. But it punctuates the innocence, child like hope and inner child that still exists inside the addicts and by extension all of us. The anguish we feel is reality imo. It’s poetic af As for people feeling resignation or a type of way from the ending, I think beyond sleuthing, documentarians will take a point of view as a conclusion or bring everything together for a societal/otherwise solution based ending or further sleuthing to uncover an ultimate source or culprit, helping the viewer make actionable sense in their head for comfortability. But idk, shit be like this though, it feels true in the sense that the resignation or hopelessness we feel can be comparable to the addict and their situation.

2024-01-24 13:55:41 +0000 UTCYou say "no matter where you are on the political spectrum, we can all agree this needs to be solved, now" but that simply isn't true. Overwhelming numbers of people, primarily from the hardcore religious fundamentalists in our country, don't agree with that, in the slightest! Is it really that hard to comprehend that there are people out there that genuinely don't care for others? That see it as a moral failing and an indictment of character? So drop the naive presumption that this is some bipartisan issue, it's not, it's a cultural issue with people not caring enough for others. It's that simple. And unfortunately, you can't wave a wand and make that change, nor can you blame government for the failings of our socio-cultural teachings on ethics and morals regarding the vulnerable in our society.
James
2024-01-24 06:52:11 +0000 UTCThat is absurd. You think K&A are portals of death, go spend a week reporting from Kherson. Those people are being shelled daily by Russian munitions. Ukrainians in occupied territory are &&&&d, tortured, and murdered. Babies too. Think about that. What that lady said about her mother tricking her, that except its at gun point, sanctioned by an army. Soldiers &&&&&g little boys and girls in front of their mother and father. Then being executed. Then the same for the mother in front of the father. Then the father is liquidated as well. You think about that next time before you deign to express disgust about the life saving and changing work that we have done in Ukraine in helping them protect themselves. And to call it a proxy war is the height of ignorance. We can help nations around the world for .2% of our annual GDP and also help Americans, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. We could house every single homeless person in America for .1% of our annual BUDGET. Not even GDP, just the revenue from the federal government alone, not even including state and local governments. Instead of demonizing the good we've done around the world and implying, even unwittingly, that it is done at the expense of Americans, ask yourself this; why is it that we have the resources to deal with this problems, at least theoretically, but we don't? The uncomfortable truth that "blaming it on Ukraine and Israel" doesn't address is that there are significant portions of the population who don't see addicts as humans. They want them in misery so they pass away quicker. They want them out of sight. They don't want to help, they see themselves as superior, and that reinforces it in their minds. We spend 25 billion dollars, roughly, on the homeless every year. Year after year. Don't tell me that because we send old military equipment to Ukraine that we don't use represents valuing the lives of people around the world more than Americans. It's hard to put into words how infuriatingly offensive it is to question the work we are doing abroad that is literally keeping millions of people alive, safe and healthy, as a scapegoat for a problem that hasn't been solved because, at the end of the day, Americans as a whole don't want to have it solved, at least not in the positive ways that we think of when we talk about a solution. And that lack of will, that has nothing to do with us helping Ukraine. Absolutely nothing.
James
2024-01-24 06:47:23 +0000 UTCMakes no sense to say that gentrification erases the culture of the place. It creates a new culture, often that blends with the old. It's how culture develops.

2024-01-15 23:22:29 +0000 UTCThe ice cream truck at the end was a really deft move by Andrew and the documentarians (not to say it wasn't a genuine gesture of kindness). The music and scene of them all touching cones was harrowing, it's another consumer product that demonstrates the symbiosis of multiple 'wheelers and dealers' in these areas of society. Another business making money off of the degredation and destruction of others, all wrapped up in a cheerful jacket. Very dark. It reinforces the storytelling conveyed throughout the documentary, leaving me with a miserable sense of resignation about this devasting societal reality.

2024-01-13 01:55:36 +0000 UTCFascinating insight. I used to work in addiction treatment (videography) and heard the same story again and again. When the opioid crackdown happened, the time release was integrated into the pills instead of as a seal, they also got more expensive and more difficult to acquire, which moved many addicts to street drugs. I will take issue, with the Ukraine comparison. I do realize that it is difficult to see money going to foreign aid when there are such issues at home, but comparatively, I would look at the amount of money in foreign aid compared to what is spent domestically. I don't know that it's a problem that more money can solve. We can't even get people in the US to agree that addiction is a disease, and get insurance to pay for addiction treatment. And if they are covered, they're often sent to less than reputable places for treatment. Not to mention the people who don't want treatment, their hierarchy of needs is whack, and they continue a cycle of addiction. It's not a simple problem of enough money. There are many good people, including those in our current administration who work long and hard on these issues every day. There is also the fact that it's a human problem, maybe not the government's to solve. It's one of our society's biggest challenges, but it's a better comparison to say the fact that billionaires exist in our society, that there are people who have homes they don't even live in and there are homeless than to draw a comparison with a government sending aid to a country fighting and dying for their autonomy. That aside, Great reporting.

2024-01-08 06:15:00 +0000 UTCOne thing I would push back on is the idea that building new "homogenized" buildings is a bad thing. Cities cannot stay frozen in time. One of the biggest causes of the nationwide housing crisis is the fact that we've made it damn near impossible to tear down old housing and build newer, denser housing in its place, especially in suburban areas with some of the highest property values in the country. Cities have to change, including and especially in their physical form. It's the biggest way to prevent displacement when wealthier individuals start moving into an area. The culture of a place ultimately comes from it's people, not the buildings or the physical form a place. The only way to prevent displacement of the people is to build more housing than there is demand.

2023-12-31 03:59:49 +0000 UTCMan this is incredible work, and I hope you skyrocket even further. The last few mins with the women were heartbreaking, but it was endearing in a bittersweet way to see how happy they were to grab an ice cream together. Not for the sake of being seen as an angel or for ad revenue or whatnot, but to enjoy an ice cream. That warmth is something they so scarcely feel in the environment they're in every single day. This is some real ass shit, and I do hope Andrew realizes that he's a saint for how mindful he is of the humanity that everyone holds.

2023-12-30 23:51:18 +0000 UTCLiving in Levittown pa the part you did on there was really cool. Everything else was amazing. Getting the male & female addicts point of view of living on the streets, to the 2 brothers who cut all the drugs, to the point of view on the people who have lived there forever. You really got all angles of what’s going on in k&a. The only thing I wish you would do in these videos that could make it better is doing a background on the city how you mentioned Michael Vick. Doing a few sports stories on cities you go to or just like history of the cities like how Philly has a long history with independence hall and all the politics we have I just feel it could add a nice touch to these videos. Regardless the videos are amazing and only have room to grow

2023-12-30 19:24:41 +0000 UTCThe city's answer to fixing the problem is importing rich white people? Wow, what a sad solution that multiple ivy league educated white men came up with. It's no wonder they get paid so much yearly and are so highly valued by society. And to the imported rich white people who move into these new homes that replaced a neighborhood market, or 50 year old family home, shame on you, go somewhere else, you're apart of the problem as well!!!!!

2023-12-30 06:48:08 +0000 UTCI thought it was weird to paint the city as evil bad guys taking away their childhood memories. What do you want. They were mad about all the crack houses so the city found funding to rehab them into student housing. They can't just magically fix everything. The government is normal ass people playing wack a mole with problem areas. Andrew really can't understand the "unsafe" aspects surrounding the drug trade? And finally of coarse they arrest dealers before users. I don't even understand what they are mad about with that one.

2023-12-30 02:38:41 +0000 UTCI think what's missing from this series vs. the san francisco series is the harm reduction angle. A friend of mine runs Savage Sisters and is doing amazing work in Kensington. But also, your San Francisco series paints a really clear picture of how the tech bubble totally fucked the city. The Temple angle here feels a little iffy? (I'm one of the caucasians on the other side of lehigh)

2023-12-26 16:06:48 +0000 UTCAs an aside, I believe the commentary made on the US military's poor spending habits is a very human, emotional conclusion to reach. Whether it be factually correct or otherwise, our friends and families are being consistently exposed to mundane horror with little to no assistance (and often recognition) from the powers that be. It's only logical that we're aware of the moral discrepancy in that.

2023-12-26 14:53:13 +0000 UTCI've followed this topic very closely online for years, seen all the graphic content I can find to get an understanding of the reality people are experiencing - and what I would probably also be experiencing if my circumstances were any less fortunate. 2023-12-26 06:28:58 +0000 UTCI think it would be good for Andrew to actually explain how this kind of funds allocation works. Not as simple as take the funds from one place and send it to another. For example with the Ukraine stuff. The $113 billion isn’t cash it’s $113 billion worth of existing weapons, much of which is slated to be decommissioned which only costs more money. It’s like when a bagel place has the option to throw away the bagels leftover from the day or donate it. In this case we “donate” the weapons to Ukraine. That being said understanding the system is important if we seek to change it. We’re clearly not doing the best for our own citizens

2023-12-26 00:28:23 +0000 UTCThis is one of the greatest reports on some issues of the cities and general urban development in the US right now I've seen in a long time! This reminds me more and more of the apartheid like in south africa, which originated in colonialism. Except this time, however, it seems more subtly rooted in general econonomic (instead of purely racist) interests to justify this kind of segregation. Really terrifying to see this happening so unrestrained. I'm really worried that this kind of development will also take place in Europe within the next few decades, if there won't be a drastic change in politics.

2023-12-25 20:31:17 +0000 UTCAbsolutely chilling story. There seems to be a clear pattern of events in every major American city and it’s only getting worse. I think a lot of young Americans who are going to these city colleges become so unaware of the environment around them and perhaps there in lies the solution. For profit university powerhouses need to be held accountable for the way they are shaping the city and inciting gentrification, they most certainly know what they are doing. Perhaps by interviewing some professors, who tend to live in the city as well and questioning them on these hard topics can lead to some change, or at the very least expose the inequality that their institution is providing. Idk tho

2023-12-25 15:51:14 +0000 UTC?? I value life and I'm afraid of when people in power decide that the best way to eradicate addiction and homelessness is to control the gene pool. 2023-12-25 15:38:02 +0000 UTCExactly, the oversimplified concept of "we are doing thing A so we cannot do thing B" does not work in politics, especially in an economic behemoth like the the US. The current drug crisis is not characterized by lack of material resources to fight it, but rather a lack of will and interest in doing so. I mean, as we saw with what's going on with gentrification at this point someone may even argue that there is more interest in keeping social degradation as it is rather than find a solution.
DokHome
2023-12-25 15:16:38 +0000 UTCSo legit. What you said about gentrification schemes "empowering hyperlocal criminal gangs" really hit me. And when you said there's no way to stop gentrification, that was so real. This ain't some CBS fantasy news. I wish you could have gotten an interview with Krasner or some law enforcement. The fact that you are tracing this same gentrification pattern across the U.S. is what I feel Channel 5 has been about, is telling the story of what America is. When you bring American points of view together that legacy media keep separate, you guys are at the peak of your game. Thank you so much - we need this, before they tear us apart for good.

2023-12-25 12:56:06 +0000 UTCAs an American from a place similarly broken and forgotten. I agree with them completely. Attempting to police the world from a point of moral authority we don’t have is hurting the public. Our military can’t even disclose its budget because of how in excess they are. They basically go to congress and say “we failed to keep track well enough to tell you where the money went”. We’re being robbed. I don’t care at all about Russia v Ukraine. I just see my people and place hurting, and people living in squaller in the one of the richest nations there has ever been. My high school had daily fights and a cop. It was built like a prison, and the education we received there was extremely inadequate. Also local infrastructure is crumbling or being privatized. Every generation is less prosperous than the last. We don’t see a dime of the war profit as every day Americans. All it does is raise the price of scrap metal and lower the price of gas. I’d like to see a little money spent to improve our homeland to make it worth defending. Hopefully I have helped you to understand the kind of place these sentiments come from if you have not been to America and seen how it is here.

2023-12-25 10:28:39 +0000 UTCUnsubscribing (used to be a huge fan since „all gas no brakes“ and used to idolize Andrew and his team for achieving the seemingly impossible neutral stance on the topics covered) after hearing the RIDICULOUS argument of military aid (which is not actually cash and mostly armaments and storage stuff anyway, which when shipped off, creates jobs opportunities cause it needs to be replenished) to countries defending themselves being in way of ending deep-rooted drug problems. Not denying the fact that the whole US military complex has to be gradually shrunk, but why for Christ sake would you want to stop the one actual good thing it has started doing since, I‘m just guessing here, WW2. Have fun with the Trump presidency and with an actual boots on the ground situation which might come to pass after moving borders in Europe gets normalized. Ex-fan, Ukraine-born, writing from Germany

2023-12-25 04:23:08 +0000 UTCDude, this is the best standard of journalism that I have ever encountered. It’s like the exact right balance of hunter thompson’s immersing himself in the world of the subject and theroux’s endless empathy and encouraging of the subject but, without baiting with leading questions to evoke the answers necessary for an engaging documentary, if that makes sense? Your point about how raising awareness of gentrification (plus all the other points) is probably futile seems true to me. But regardless, I think these films will be important at some point in the future. Please, keep doing what you are doing. Also- the point where the guy at the cross of A & K, says that him and his friend have college degrees, but point out that they are not the people targeted by the price fixing/gouging of gentrification because of their skin colour “no offence”, directed towards you really highlighted your authenticity to me. I could not have more respect for what you are doing.

2023-12-25 01:39:55 +0000 UTCThis was great. People have been talking about drugs and Kensington since the 90s and I’d wager nothing like this has been produced by any media outlet. To answer your question directly, if there is footage touching more on the shift from K&A Gang in 70s/80s to what it is today starting in the 90s. White flight by a criminal element isn’t really explored in these sort of stories. Props on the Schmidt jersey. One of the best mustaches in the business.
