Props to Andrew and his team for showing the harsh reality, compassion of others and questioning the system by which we operate.

2024-01-06 06:16:17 +0000 UTCThe intro to this reminds me of a quote from Socrates that says "No one knowingly does evil", and he goes on to argue that evil doers think that they are achieving some good by their evil acts. Whenever I'm confronted with evil behavior that I just can't understand I think back on this and instead of giving into righteous indignation I try to see what good they could think their actions bring about. It really helps re-center me and process the emotional reaction I have to what I see as evil acts, and can even give me a way to start a discussion with the "evil doer".

2023-12-31 15:18:49 +0000 UTCThe fact that andrew and his team took the time to step back, analyze their own content, and ask "whats the real story here?" and change this from exploitation of the disenfranchised into a true documentary on the causes and effects of the drug epidemic. This is a hallmark of a great journalist and documentarian.

If only they were in the best country in the world with welfare programs, food banks, social programs, etc. Oh wait this is in the USA? Ohhh. Come on get real. Plenty of ex-addicts will tell you the solution is not giving people syringes and passing the blame to others.

2023-12-26 19:51:15 +0000 UTCI wouldn't say your coverage is unethical- you treat everyone you interview with respect and your approach is clearly intended to illuminate rather than exploit. 2023-12-24 13:50:36 +0000 UTCI like where this is headed. Culture isn't as simple as day to day choices. Ideologies permeate through cities, and people throughout time. Decisions made today, especially ones regarding the welfare of citizens in a community, will have consequences for years to come. One of the curses of human nature is to look at your immediate surroundings to explain the circumstances. However, we rarely consider how the systemic lack of support can have a ripple effect on the outcome of an area and a community. The only caveat is that drugs don't discriminate, they will ruin anyones lives, but if you look a little closer at the communities that are suffering the worst, you will find a safe haven for illness that has been created by contempt and greed.
John
2023-12-24 04:30:16 +0000 UTCMy parents think the same way as you. In their view (informed by their evangelical worldview) the causes of problems are sinful choices by others. To them, and it appears to you, people are poor and get into drugs because they are bad people and make bad choices. If you listen to what the people are saying in this series and the San Francisco series most people say they want to quit but they’re hopeless because the social safety net is more primed to punish them instead of help them. People often steal because they are desperate and there is nothing left for them. Help and don’t judge, that’s the best way to assist people in getting back up on their feet.

2023-12-23 18:41:48 +0000 UTCGood journalism as always. I dont think it is fair to blame everything on white people. That is getting tiresome to hear. People can choose to NOT do a bunch of terrible drugs regardless of their situation. I do have sympathy for addiction. I blame feminism for basically every economic and political turmoil we have today. The break down of the family structure has hurt black people in a worse way than white people even. Men have no incentive and more competition with women in job markets. Leads to single mom houses, which leads to kids who end up committing more crimes.

2023-12-23 13:52:08 +0000 UTCYou might be the only journalist actually digging into the multivariate and messy backgrounds of social ills. I lived in San Francisco for 5+ years, including through the pandemic, and it is so refreshing to hear a public figure talk about *all* angles of the issues instead of just beating a particular political drum. You should get the goddamn Pulitzer (you won't though, sorry -- that's reserved for people who are more obedient and more boring). But I'll support this sort of work in any way I can. What you are doing is more important than the output of entire papers of record at this particular time in human history. Thanks for being you. Keep doing it. I'll keep supporting you.

2023-12-22 17:40:30 +0000 UTCAs someone who works in the school system, specifically in kensington. Would you mind sharing a bit about your experiences in the school system? Specifically how were your experiences learning subjects such as science and social studies? retention of teachers? If you dont feel comfortable going into detail, understood completely. I have experience in north philly, but im interested in hearing more from south.
norina cobb
2023-12-22 17:30:55 +0000 UTC"A person has no power in changing or influencing the trajectory of a doomed society" when I think about my students in Kensington and philly, it starts young. They see their parents, uncles, aunts, with the same ideologies or they see their relatives suffering with addiction. The children of Kensington have enough awareness, they know what this shit is, they need resources and ACTUAL change besides shiesty bans and CURFEWS. The average age a student goes into drug crime in philly is around 14-15 years old from my understanding. Our school systems are projecting a deficit in the 700 millions by 2027, not to mention the amount of lawsuits and malpractice. Im not saying school systems are the solvent to everything philly is facing, but how can we expect them to see value in education when we dont see the value in supplying the funding for quality education. HOW CAN WE EXPECT STUDENTS TO BELIEVE THEY CAN MAKE CHANGE WHEN THE PEOPLE WHO CAN HAVE FAILED THEM EVERY-TIME. Alot of parents send their kids to charter schools not knowing that they barely teach about subjects like science and social studies because it isnt monitored by the state like a public school is, they care about their math and reading scores, because thats what they are required to show. Ive seen a charter school go through 4 different social studies teachers in 5 months and not even bat an eye. That isnt to say that all charter schools are like this, but its an active concern of educators. Not to mention the fact that none of us can get in touch with a parent when something is wrong, which I believe is deep rooted in their own personal experience of disappointment and betrayal in the school system. Its a cycle of our school systems, not have the funding to supply the resources. The funding that we do obtain goes to the large, excessive amount of higher ups that are being paid larger amounts. While teachers in philly are still being paid shit, and it shows in the retention rates. Im done LMAO enough social media for the day

2023-12-22 15:25:28 +0000 UTCI understand it’s hard to get a candid opinion from a plug in a trap house. That being said I think you missed whole perspective that is pertinent to a valid take on the situation. Socioeconomic and educational disadvantages are important take into consideration in regards to the outlook of the plug. I wish you touched on the effects of encroaching gentrification on the heads in the K&A, because that is the modern day language of redlining. (Ps I’m not a tranq apologist) I grew up outside Philly in Delco when I was a kid, then moved in with my Dad, in Southwest. The K&A is undoubtedly the epicenter in Philly. The truth is this shit is everywhere, it’s just not always as pervasive. (In regards to fent not tranq) Out of highschool I moved to Portland, and pretty much more of the same in regards to drug-use. The point is, it’s indicative of a greater systemic problem and these are the aftershocks. The pharmaceutical industrial complex created the problem, lied about the efficacy, and cashed out. bada bing bada boom. Now the whole country is left with the human collateral damage. Keep up the goodwork, I’m glad to see to taking a more serious route. I will get off my soapbox now.

2023-12-22 03:42:21 +0000 UTCHi Andrew and team, thanks for all the new content recently! I didn't enjoy this video as much as other recent ones- I hope that part 4 connects this all back to the current situation in Philly pretty hard. I think lots of the content of this video has already been well documented by others, with countless other videos on YouTube alone for these topics (Jim Crowe america, redlining, how suburbs came to be, etc) in general. What's much more interesting, to me, is to see your perspective on what's going on now. I would love to watch you dive deep into the factors that cause a situation like Kensington to arise, but go for the throat! Whether property developers, cops, local officials, university representatives, or whatever- see if any of these folks will spill the beans! You seem to imply that Kensington isn't a "typical" gentrification situation (l agree), and that it's a coordinated and corrupt effort. I hope part 4 sheds some light on more evidence for these claims, rather than more distant and less specific-to-Philly history. Check out some of Charlie LeDuff's older work to see what I mean. Just wanted to share my 2 cents in case you read this. Keep doing your thing. ✌️

2023-12-21 15:54:35 +0000 UTCThe native American culture isn't even from here. There is only one other place in the world that uses teepees home structures and they aren't American. American culture starts with simple things like the milpa planting system of braiding the roots of corn squash and bean plants. Funny how only one culture uses those same herbs in America. Southern American cooking is known for this not native American. You cannot have a foreigner come to a new country and plant. It takes great understanding of the land. What native American farmers do you know? My people been farming this land since before we were forced to.

2023-12-21 08:52:36 +0000 UTCI am not confused. How about you actually learn something. 2023-12-21 04:37:19 +0000 UTCAre the Kensington city officials supposed to have an answer on the evils of drug dealers and the potato famine? Do you really think when faced with honest questions, that dishonest people will rise to the occasion and call out the evils of a society that they derive their profits from? Is anyone really this naive, the legacy of red lining is established historical fact across many major U.S. cities and its affects on non-white populations isn't really up for debate. Arguing for a burden of proof on events that are decades old is just a wildly ignorant thing to be doing.
James Bell
2023-12-21 03:37:19 +0000 UTCLove you guys, but some constructive criticism: I appreciate channel 5 for its ability to be a mirror to the world and how complex it is. You lose a bit of that when you try to shape a subjective narrative, especially a moral one. Saying these dealers are evil, or that the city of Kensington is allowing open drug markets to flourish to lower land prices, or that the british committed genocide against the irish via the potato famine, or white flight-- these are complex issues, multipolar and something you can't just wrap up in a nice bow. There's a burden of proof if you want to make those claims. So maybe interview some Kensington city officials and ask them about commercial developers, and vice versa

2023-12-20 08:37:05 +0000 UTCBeautiful analysis. As a Taoist I agree with you, and believe people have different values and goals. I always encourage Buddha’s eightfold path, which includes “right occupation”. It’s my understanding this would not include occupations which lead to others’ suffering. God bless and amen. 🇬🇧

2023-12-20 05:37:43 +0000 UTCTruly appreciate this series, very legitimate reporting, high levels of awareness, and without a doubt worth reporting on. When I watch channel 5 pieces it leads to reflection, a sense of understanding, and less judgment of those who are suffering at all levels. Keep up the good work Andrew and Crew!

2023-12-20 05:28:32 +0000 UTCAndrew, I had no idea you were from Philly! Everyone I've ever met from there is easy to talk to (myself included). Your piece is an excellent primer on the complicated history of Philly. Way way back my family moved to Philly from Virginia. My grandfather's brother lived to be 101 years old, and one of his lasting memories was being able to buy a home in Elkins Park, just north of the city. Looking forward to more of your coverage of a very overlooked and underrated city! Keep it up!

2023-12-20 03:57:20 +0000 UTCFeedback: I don't know how I feel about that stock footage of the child abduction. It's kinda funny in theory, but I thought it was regular B roll at first, so I found it shocking when he grabbed the girl.

Alex
2023-12-20 03:28:19 +0000 UTCI tend to agree. The analysis comes close to the truth though. Most likely people like this simply don't care; or if they even think about it at all, recognize, unfortunately rightly I think, that good and evil aren't real. That, plus a lack of empathy, equals some extremely destructive behavior.

2023-12-20 02:55:01 +0000 UTCIt's a liberal city. Mass incarceration of drug addicts won't be popular, and neither will involuntary drug treatment. Also, taking down the kingpins will only make room for another. We're also plagued by gun violence, and the cops have their hands full (they're arguably corrupt and lazy). K&A is the least of their worries. People don't care about the poor. But yeah, I think Kensington is a real estate scheme. Northern Liberties was first, then Fishtown, and now Kensington. Have you driven down Front Street going north, then turned onto Kensington Ave? They are really building that area. It's nice and then randomly turns into the hood. Eventually, it won't be the hood either. We are one of the last major cities that is still fairly affordable. Investors see that and are building. Once money starts flooding the area, the city will ensure it's policed well. What will happen to the addicts? Who knows? They'll probably get pushed out further into the Northeast eventually.

2023-12-20 02:50:32 +0000 UTCThis is great. I’m from the Jersey side I’m from one of the former Levittowns, it’s called Willingboro now. It’s unique compared to others bc it’s the only one that’s predominantly black today. Would be dope to get a shout out. Love your work.

2023-12-20 02:39:19 +0000 UTCI believe you are educating and raising awareness in a respectful way bro. Actively questioning ones own actions is a decent indicator one has a decent moral compass. So I have heard...
Daniel Carroll
2023-12-20 02:31:50 +0000 UTCYou know ive lived in philly my entire life and never thought that K&A was a real estate scheme. I always just thought the police decided to just contain all the addicts over there so nobody else would have to deal with them. Did you do more research into why the police seem to never do shit? I feel like it has to do with the fraternal order of police.

2023-12-20 02:00:41 +0000 UTCthe pop psychology analysis of the dealers is terrible. You're reading what they say to you, a representative of the public, as what they really think. Not a very intelligent reading given the obvious motive for them to dissimulate during the interview

2023-12-20 01:58:15 +0000 UTCWow, that is an awesome deep dive into the 20th century history of Philly. I didn't know suburbs were invented at that time, very interesting to see the thread of how redlining has a sort of domino effect on an entire area like that. Keep it up, AC, awesome reporting.
