Arizona Border Crisis (Part 3/4)
Added 2024-01-14 02:04:09 +0000 UTCIn this episode, we consider the authenticity of many migrants' claim that 'the Cartel' is creating an unsafe living environment for average, non-criminal citizens in Mexico.
We also look through some of the discarded backpacks that were left behind in the Sonoran Desert and speak with migrants of Guinean and Guatemalan descent about their long journey into the United States.
In the concluding moments of this episode, we see hundreds of migrants load onto the now-infamous commuter buses with Texas license-plates that are alleged to have been dropping off busloads of migrants in New York City, Chicago, and Tucson with nothing but court dates and government-provided cellphones.
Part 4, which will release sometime next week, involves apprehension from Federal Law Enforcement agents who claimed we were breaking the law by 'following' the bus.
Enjoy,

2024-01-22 02:37:18 +0000 UTCThat's not correct. If they fail to show up to their hearing, the immigration judge enters a default judgment against them, and they are then under a deportation order, making their presence in the United States unlawful. This happens many times a day, yes, but none of this bears on whether their initial entry was lawful. I'm well aware of the times involved concerning how long it takes to get a hearing. And this video does not talk about coyotes coaching migrants to say certain things; there is merely some relatively unhinged dude, potentially the same guy from the Area-51 raid, lurking around federal land, who thinks a USB-C cord indicates that poverty doesn't exist, who thinks that similarity in migrants' stories mean the stories are made up or the migrants are being coached by coyotes. Does this happen in some cases? Probably. But these migrants just as well could have written these things down to remember how to testify about the real things that happened to them and exactly what to testify to when their hearing occurs, potentially two years down the line. Consistency is key in asylum case. And it's important they remember exactly what to say because what an immigrant says to a border patrol agent at the initial asylum screening will be referenced against their in-court testimony during their asylum hearing. It's not difficult to imagine an immigrant would write down the important things they want to remember to say.

2024-01-22 00:48:09 +0000 UTCthere's nothing racist about wanting to secure your borders from an unregulated amount of people entering illegally without knowing who they are, what their (criminal) history is, or what they're bringing with them (most of the illicit drugs and weapons in this country are smuggled over the border)
2024-01-20 21:03:31 +0000 UTCIt is illegal once they fail to show up for their asylum hearing. Did you miss the part where it takes up to 2 years to even get a hearing? They enter knowing they have years before even needing to worry if their claim is valid or not. The video even talks about coyotes coaching migrants in how to exploit the system. All these issues would go away if we could resolve asylum cases in a week instead of 2 years.

2024-01-16 07:42:17 +0000 UTCI agree. But just coming here doesn't help. Our obligation costs money, requires housing, which costs money, requires medical services which require money, the list goes on. It feels good to help everyone but where does the money come from? Who is going to decide whether they are contributing or nefarious? How will they know? How do you vet them to tell the difference? You can't just let everyone openly cross between borders. That is why borders were established. There is a process that needs to be maintained in order to make successful and safe immigration possible.

Regarding the porn-leaning stance though, you're right, it's the only social media where someone will edge their meat to "orenge man bad" headline rhetoric before nutting to a bukkake webm file, then proceed to laugh at cat videos within the same 30 minute time period because the userbase is in a perpetual state of MKUltra-tier brainrot. >Pick journalists with consistent, predictable biases that still go out there and do journalism instead of just commentating, and you'll be well served. This wasn't good journalism, it was pandering. I don't care if this sounds harsh, Andrew's stances are naive zoomer hot takes. His immigration sympathy POV is derived from his grandparents being immigrants, so were mine bud. My father's side were Jewish Holocaust survivors, my mother's side were Germans that were shelled throughout WW2 despite not being responsible for any of the atrocities committed in their nation that they were steadfastly in opposition to. It doesn't make me a reliable narrator to give commentary about f***ing immigration laws, or social justice, or economic migration, or anything else, and I'm just as informed about this stuff as Andrew is. That's the point. Give us reasonable coverage to world events and don't overlay partisan commentary regardless of personal background or preconceived notions, this is all I'm asking, and that's what good journalism is, whether you can fathom this or not.

2024-01-16 03:51:22 +0000 UTC>reddit is extremely left leaning sure, m8. Reddit is porn-leaning if anything. Anyway, journalists aren't expert witnesses going over their recollections in exacting detail. They are telling a story, and the story is biased by their own personal experience of what happened. Even deciding what to cover involves some bias on the journalist's part. It is unavoidable. Pick journalists with consistent, predictable biases that still go out there and do journalism instead of just commentating, and you'll be well served.

2024-01-16 00:57:00 +0000 UTClol reddit is extremely left leaning and likes as much slant as possible, pretty sure most of the commenters here are redditors. I avoid that website like the plague. Anything even slightly left-of-center gets deleted or downvoted to oblivion on the political subs, it's bad over there. Also media and specifically JOURNALISM can be un-biased, we just live in a contentious, highly divisive period of time. Saying "there is no world where media can be un-biased" is cynical at best. If everyone expects nothing better you'll never get anything better. At the very least, give alternative perspectives based on the same evidence reported. That's literally what good journalism is, weighing altering viewpoints without jumping to concrete conclusions and leaving it up to the audience to form their own opnions.

2024-01-15 22:27:31 +0000 UTC@loli Good journalism is the dissemination of accurate information without slant, or relaying a range of opinions in a manner which fulfills the informational need of all persons without bias. Journalists are supposed to be objective and neutral even with issues that are complex and divisive. Activism journalism and slanted journalism is the reason why journalism is a dying artform and the Cronkite era, or Vice News era, is extinct. Opinions and solutions should be left up to the viewers' interpretation and the journalist should assume that the viewers are intelligent enough to form their own perspectives, not imposing narratives that may or may not be correct in the first place. I like to be shown different perspectives, or learn something new about an important issue in our own society or throughout our world. That's why I subscribed to this patreon. I don't need commentary inserted that attempts to make up my own mind for me through the narrator. It alienates the adult users and even the people who might agree with his viewpoints do not welcome the annotations. It echoes 2010s and 2020s journalism, the worst kind which assumes that all of my worldviews need to be molded because my knowledge base is too barren to contextualize new information in the first place. Andrew is a good journalist, he has a ton of potential to be one of the greats, the likes of which we've not seen in decades now. But those greats didn't interject world views, they left interpretation up to the listeners and viewers.

2024-01-15 19:56:21 +0000 UTCI've also seen some other comments about these migrants entering illegally. If they are entering to claim asylum, however legit their claim is, their entry is not illegal. Asylum is international law that the US abides by, not just a US law. Per asylum law, a person does not have to enter at a port of entry in order to claim asylum. In such case, there is nothing illegal about these migrants' entries.
Mark Anderson
2024-01-15 19:45:09 +0000 UTCAndrew, I wish you would have spoken on what types of Asylum claims are successful. For example, Asylum claims based on gang violence are routinely denied. Even being shot at, having family members killed, being kidnapped, or extorted are not enough to support a successful Asylum claim. The persecution (kidnapping, killing, etc.) must be because of a protected characteristic (think religion, political beliefs, etc.). Mere gang violence, while sad, does not allow someone to successfully seek asylum.

2024-01-15 19:40:58 +0000 UTCWell actually immigrants send $800billion/year to home countries - remittances, I think the average is about 15-20 percent of earnings. But I’m not worried about that, it’s probably a more effective infusion than foreign aid. And agree with all that is said about the structural issues, Income distribution, etc - I’m a Bernie Sanders supporter after all. And the immigration process and system is absurdly problematic. Yes if we could fix the immigration system and laws, if we could redistribute resources away from military and waste, if we could get rich people to pay a fair share of taxes…:there would be plenty of resources for everything. But those things aren’t going to change anytime soon, if ever. And today, right now, There are hundreds of thousands of migrants who need food clothes medical care education shelter, with an additional 5-10k per day crossing the border. Civil entities can’t, in this immediate time frame, provide necessary resources without financial consequences. Speaking of nuance…..I argue that - it is possible to view the current migrant spike as a crisis and not be a trumper xenophobe racist. It is possible to hold philosophical views of more open borders, celebrate the richness of ethnic and cultural diversity, Etc….and also see the scale of current migration pressure as an immediate crisis that needs both immediate measures for relief and long term sweeping changes.

2024-01-15 14:29:43 +0000 UTCThis is a keynesian monetary policy issue. Fractional reserve banking and targeted inflation in perpetuity is literally borrowing from the future. It was a massive mistake to implement this economic model expecting a different outcome when it inherently comes with an eventual expiration date as growth inevitably becomes stagnation. And if deflation occurs rather than inflation, the entire system breaks. We can thank central banking and the Federal Reserve cartel for this.

2024-01-15 13:59:48 +0000 UTCYou've been paying taxes your entire life because you have the option to work, pay taxes and receive said benefits from your taxes - while illegal immigrants work, pay taxes and are not eligible for most of those benefits. Essentially every dollar earned by illegal immigrants is immediately used on goods and services, further supporting the economy. While it is difficult to see exactly how much they contribute and take from the economy, a blanket statement that they come here totally depending on the US to "take care of them" doesn't give any kind of picture of the reality, including the nuance. Focusing on stopping people from coming to the US is not going to help any of our actual structural issues such as wage gaps, unaffordable housing, inflation, healthcare and overall cost of living. It's a red herring that gets people riled up and worried about "the others" somehow taking what is ours or stressing our system. When we see billions suddenly made available for geopolitical positioning globally, but then have the government turn around and say free healthcare is a dream and student debt is the students' problem, I think we can start to see and agree that there actually is enough for everyone - it's just concentrated in the hands of very few people and corporations. Constant never ending growth of GDP and productivity is what's really not sustainable here.

2024-01-15 13:12:24 +0000 UTCRead between the lines... My process was a lot harder and took many years by the way. If anyone can come through the border with the caravan, get a bus ticket to sanctuary after crossing, whose to say some of these people aren't criminals. 2024-01-15 06:25:18 +0000 UTCThis series is devolving into less journalism and more grifting by filming current partisan crises with shallow interviews and interjecting with hot takes when it's convenient and plays to heartstrings. Part 1 and 2 were good. I didn't learn jack from this one, at least any more than I'd see by just scrolling twitter. I'm not hating, it's just a critique and I haven't felt this way about either the SF or Kensington series (although the political interjections were much more frequent in the latter). I can't put my finger on it, this episode lacked anything that might have resembled depth or nuance. The interview with the Guatemalan felt hasty, the interview with the guy from Guinea felt disingenuous and you were just trying to "bro up" with the guy. It didn't feel like journalism. Just my 2 cents and I'm not hating, just giving my thoughts as a viewer. Hope it's at least constructive.

2024-01-15 05:07:45 +0000 UTCHe just struck me as cautious - trying to present himself how he thinks the yanks expect him to. His demeanor changed once he had a drink and started opening up. He doesn't know who this guy is, but he knows that hes on a road where he might encounter people that want to hurt him so it makes sense that he wouldn't want to give too much away. It also sounded to me like he didn't really have any specific goals beyond a better life - his last words on the matter were essentially 'I'll take whatever god gives me'.

2024-01-15 03:18:28 +0000 UTCMy heart literally freaking breaks for Miguel and so many others. It's America's duty and obligation to help those who are less fortunate. “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore, Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” The USA has also directly caused most of the south american, central america economic problems too. Of course with the added bonus of France, Spain, Portugal, and England.
2024-01-15 03:05:22 +0000 UTCThem Zaza slides would go hard af!!
2024-01-15 02:39:42 +0000 UTCI believe directly, it starts with a lack of education. As many studies show that better educated countries have better understanding and use of birth control and family planning. But it also related to the general state of Guatemala and other 3rd world countries. I heard a good quote that places like that are not underdeveloped but rather over-exploited. I did a quick search on Wikipedia and it said: In the 16th century, most of this area was conquered by the Spanish and claimed as part of the viceroyalty of New Spain. Guatemala attained independence in 1821 from Spain and Mexico. In 1823, it became part of the Federal Republic of Central America, which dissolved by 1841. From the mid- to late 19th century, Guatemala suffered chronic instability and civil strife. Beginning in the early 20th century, it was ruled by a series of dictators backed by the United Fruit Company and the United States government. If country is just used for it's resources by imperialistic governments like Spain and the U.S. and allows corporations like the United Fruit Company to start wars and prop up dictators, it is not a good thing and leads to problems like this.

2024-01-14 21:37:17 +0000 UTCOmar Elhassan you are arguing that illegal immigration is justified because the current legalization system is inefficient and…anyone legal or not, citizen or not, have the same rights in the US. That is a difficult sell. I am not buying. ( For one thing I’ve been paying taxes for my entire life.. plus it just makes no sense). Yes I am a citizen by luck, did not do anything to earn my good fortune. But that is irrelevant to deciding how to interpret existing laws and manage real time social problems like millions of illegal citizens who are totally dependent on the US to care for them: yes they want to work and the rules that delay that are a problem but the reality today is that it will cost hundreds of billions, just for basic needs. Not sustainable. Can the economy eventually absorb everyone? I don’t know, maybe: I said not a word about jobs, nor do I deny benefitting in some ways from underground economy, tho there are also big costs to that. Regardless of political philosophy, the problems created by the scale of illegal immigration are real, real-time, and probably cannot be mitigated without a change of policy that changes incentives.

2024-01-14 20:49:02 +0000 UTCI understand how you would interpret the questions. I know the journey is hard for many people. Other people do indeed fly/bus into a place like Mexicali, according to people who work on the border. But I don't know percentages. Yes I do have a sense of how long it takes to get citizenship and green card etc. It should be faster. Meantime however the inefficiency of the system doesn't mean the law can be ignored - the scale of illegal crossers moving into the temporary asylum system is unsustainable. New York, Chicago, Denver, among other places - don't have the resources to feed, house, educate, provide medical care to hundreds of thousands. The homeless population and poverty already a huge issue.
Kristi Brennan
2024-01-14 20:48:55 +0000 UTCWe should be spending our military on ridding our north and south continents of the cartels instead of funding Israel and ukraine. That way migrants can go back and build a life.

2024-01-14 20:04:07 +0000 UTCYou would have a hard time coming up with the money but if you had no better options you would find a way no matter how long it took... you make zero note of how long it can take people to save up this amount of money. if the process was easier, more straightforward and better to be able to be here legally more people would do so as well. you also benefit from the underground economy through agriculture, food service, waste management, cleaners etc basically all these jobs "they are taking from us" are the jobs you wouldn't want for yourself or anyone you know. Some basic human empathy would go a long way, and remembering that you only have your opportunities, rights and passport just by virtue of pure luck of being born on US soil - you didn't work for or earn that in any way shape or form. Every person who comes legally or illegally has 100% just as much right and are just as worthy of what the US has to offer as you.
2024-01-14 19:56:51 +0000 UTCbasic android smartphones are everywhere and easier to get than most other things, and almost everyone has a phone... having a usb c charger and knockoffs doesn't in any way shape or form mean they have a lot of money. buying a stolen phone in a black market is quite cheap and one of the most useful things to have
2024-01-14 19:54:17 +0000 UTCYou act like they're flying first class. The journey is unbearable and they make the journey in hopes of a better life. If they don't pay it's not like the cartel is empathetic to that. Are you aware the amount of time it takes to finalize a citizenship let alone renew a green card?? "What percent actually apply" to " why would they even apply if they're most likely to fail?" Which stance is it? Oh they NEED to be confined?

2024-01-14 17:29:50 +0000 UTCI have questions: 1. FINANCING: The people are too poor to own a house and are escaping poverty but can afford to fly and bus from Africa? And can pay cartels 5-10K for a single person crossing? I would have a hard time coming up with that kind of money. Yes they pay half up front and owe the rest, But that is still a lot of money. 2. LEGITIMACY OF ASYLUM "Credible Fear" CLAIMS: I have also seen interviews of border people who also confirm that migrants are being being coached to say the buzz words re gangs cartels kidnappings etc. I know there is high levels of violence, but every single migrant says the same thing. 3. WHAT PERCENT OF MIGRANTS WHO ARE RELEASED INTO THE COUNTRY ACTUALLY APPLY FOR ASYLUM vs disappear into the underground economy. Of the people who do apply I think a high percentage show up for their hearing, but the success rate is something like 30% or less. Since most migrants probably don't have legitimate asylum claims in the first place, why would they even apply, knowing they will get deported if they fail, which 70% will. Its the stupid asylum rules the Catch and Release policy -that is creating the insane migrant incentive. If entering illegally, they should be screened more rigorously to determine asylum claim legitimacy. then either: a. deported, or b. have a U.S. citizen/group sponsor that is responsible for taking care of them financially, they should not be eligible for publicly funded social services unless citizens. or c. if no sponsor they need to be confined in camps until their hearings. It will be no more expensive for the feds to feed them than it is for New York or Chicago or California. And they have broken the law by entering illegally. That disincentive will decrease the immigration. At least remove the positive incentives of Catch and Release.

2024-01-14 05:54:05 +0000 UTCCould be somebody writing down what happened to them. Or the most common thing happening to the people trying to escape from it. The cartels would still benefit by making themselves sound more powerful if people kept saying what they were forced to run from and be extorted by to get away. There’s no conflict in that. But I think it’s really desperation of all types. which is the cause for almost all rule breaking from poor people. Greed is the reason for rule breaking from rich people

2024-01-14 04:37:45 +0000 UTCLook at what's taking place in Ecuador right now. It isn't hard to see that the level of narcoterror and insecurity in Latin America is pervasive and nearly institutionalized. Some folks are most certainly sent with the intent of helping the cartels further establish footholds in the U.S. for future trade. However, this doesn't invalidate the reality of so many people fleeing the violence these criminal organizations regularly engage in. It doesn't matter how much you want to stay and fix your own home country when it means living under constant imposition and extortion, with threats of death to your spouse, children, and loved ones if a regular monthly fee of approximately $30 isn't paid. And it doesn't matter if you're a giant corporate entity either, these criminal groups always get their so-called 'rent' and it leads to even bigger issues of businesses appearing to uphold and help said criminal operations. Great work btw,

2024-01-14 02:56:05 +0000 UTC100% the guy doesn't speak English, has zero skills, but wants to work and will do "anything" guess what buddy? There are Americans who are citizens, struggling to pay their bills right now. It's not that simple. NOT only are you not going to make enough money to "break" your family free, you'll be lucky to be able to fully provide for YOURSELF here, plus your acceptance to do "any" job, just devalues the labor market even further. All of them are running from "kidnapping" or the "cartel" but it's the Cartel that they paid to bring them here... so they're giving money to the organizations they are claiming to be afraid of? Also on that topic, these "poor" migrants, how did they come up with $6,000-$10,000 USD to pay the Cartel with to smuggle them if they are so poor. Only a clown would believe or stand for this garbage. We are supposed to be a sovereign nation for God's sake

2024-01-14 02:55:58 +0000 UTCI am mexican and I am an immigrant who got residency after being brought here by my parents as a child of no choice of my own, I do kinda hate how people can just claim the cartel is fucking them up and all this and they come here get asylum food stamps , money, etc. I had to wait on my residency in Juarez for over 30 days with my wife and my daughter who was one at the time, paying a hotel every night and in Juarez close to the border we were paying 150 dollars for a hotel everday, plus food! It cost me over 10k to get my shit, when I came back to the airport in Denver, a process that was suppose to take a week was over a month and a half, and my parking bill was like $1500 luckily I got lucky in investing or else I would have been fucksville. Plus I've been paying taxes since I started working 2013 without any government help, and these guys just come here and bypass all that shit.

2024-01-14 02:55:27 +0000 UTCFeels more biased than usual. Too much cry guy. I have no opinion on immigration but this feels like a feel good story to inspire more people to come. Wish part four would go over the criminals drug mules and cartels. If you follow the bus ask the people living around the neighborhood how the immigrants group how life’s been. Has there been an up scale in crime drugs and gangs? Interview long term migrants how life for them is going.

That interview with the Guatemalan man just looking for a better life for his family was very heartfelt. I wish him the best and I hope he makes it back to Guatemala one day to build his house and hopefully bring others up with him.
