San Francisco Streets (Part 6/6) - Harm Reduction Finale

Hey guys.

It's been a great series. I plan to release my 'pimp' interviews over the coming days as Extras, but here's this -- some more interviews from inside The Gubbio Project and with a Narcan courier named Antonio Chavez, who runs a non-profit called 'Lost Soul Courier Collective,' which delivers Narcan on-demand to anywhere in San Francisco, 7 days a week. I plan to use the final YouTube cut as an opportunity to raise funds for both non-profits, as I believe they are genuinely doing good work, but for now they'll live on Patreon.

Rarely do interviews make me emotional but the longer one with Antonio here really did .. and got me thinking about the ways I've been conditioned to exile friends and loved ones who are struggling with drugs, and how 'Just Say No,' abstinence logic has been embedded into my psyche for so long and effectively caused me to dehumanize 'hard' drug users who may have been in dire need of care and/or support.

Anyways, this series has been intense and eye-opening for me as a creator. I really hope you guys enjoyed it.

Until next time,

AC.

Marc Curran

If everyone could think nobody is better than anybody we would have a good world.

Kerri

aint nobody better than anyone

c j

yes because policing morality has worked so well historically. We should just become Saudi Arabia, and stone drug addicts to death, for the children!

Mitchell Rotoloni

If there is no stigma, and no policing of morality, nothing will ever end. The stories are tragic, but things need to change -- for these people suffering, and the future generations of kids being born into this complete dumpster fire.

Matthew Novick

I laughed, I cried, I learned. Amazing series team happy you're back at it.

Paris Demille Johnson

brutal. incredible coverage. amazing to see individuals picking up the slack where the greater infrastructure fails. Andrew, how you get people to open to you is a gift and i’m proud to support it 🫶

Justin Scholtens

I think Antonio's monologue should go on the main channel. It's simply too beautiful and too powerful. I felt his pain and cried for him, and I think as a internet based medium we need to make sure powerful stories like his are told to as many people as possible. Andrew, thanks for giving him a platform to speak. Let's make that platform bigger.

Matt

beautiful piece tbh

Svetie

The last sentence rings in my ears still. Super strong.

Lajos Hankó

Nah he’s onto something. Addiction doesn’t start in a vacuum, addiction starts because of a lack of something within a person

Jori Vajretti

Providing narcan on demand is a good thing and no one can convince me otherwise. However, it’s sad that it’s in demand on such a mass scale in SF, and we need serious dual-diagnosis and incentive based support programs to rehabilitate these people. They deserve humanity. CA needs to look at how other countries have successfully dealt with similar issues and start building. But we probably won’t, so…here goes another comment into the cyber wind LOL.

Jori Vajretti

So crazy that the dude who’s all agro about drug use was just a coke head. Antonio’s story really checks the reality of the situation

Parker Anderson

Fuck me this was hard to watch. Antonio needs to be heard by so many people

Timothy Williams

how human we all are, aint nobody better than anybody. Im in tears typing this. Thank you for capturing how much this hurts.

Please put Antonio's section on YouTube!

James Cook

Antonio's story absolutely deserves to be published in a monetizable format

The interview with Antonio was the most heart wrenching interview out of the whole series. I noticed its not in the youtube cut was there a reason for this or will it be uploaded separately? feel like more people gotta hear what he had to say

Sweaty Palms

I got really emotional at the end. Very powerful stuff.

BradfordGuberland

Please put Antonio’s video on YouTube!

Ezra Weissman

The difference between you and millions of Americans with opiate addictions is literally a doctor’s prescription. That’s it. For profit pharmaceutical corporations moved to overprescribe opiate painkillers, and at the advice of a doctor, millions of people became addicted to the point of needing to continue with illegal substances. You are not better than them in any way, you’re just lucky and a prick about it.

Benji Spetter-Goldstein

how human we all are

Devin Smith

Damn that was more powerful than I expected

Fun Guy

I wish you put Antonio on your youtube video, more people should know about him.He is a real one. And fuck the night crawler cuntbag Raw Ricky, he aint doing anything productive just milking a bad situation

Fuck dude. I’m so grateful to provide for this service. More power to it.

Bo Latham

This is a really important conversation to have. I hope people pay attention. Thanks for this. Much love, respect.

EggyBurps

The sad fact that Ricky "Bobby Bottleservice" Win attempts to represent The City is more embarrassing to those of us who live in San Francisco than "We Built This City On Rock And Roll" AND the band Train, combined. He's THAT embarrassing.

Richard Scargill

Was the dude in the background from Squid Game at 2 min?

'C0COP '

Yo! Antonio and the Couriers need our help! Their lease is contentious right now and they're trying to raise $10k to keep it. I donated myself, and wanted to spread the word to folks since it resonates deeply with me. As a San Franciscan this man is a true blessing to our community doing the hard and heavy work. https://www.gofundme.com/f/2emotkglm0

Chris

Oh cool we send Israel money to commit genocide and they hook Americans on opioids, Nice!

Merglatroid Skittle

Fucking heartbreaking. Thank you Andrew. The fox assholes and ricci kinda people don't have any humanity or heart or soul left, it's evil how they devalue people. Ffs man. This had me mad

Guevon

Antonio!!! I’ve been following him for while, I carried narcan because of his care for others.

Adam Titone

That last interview... Broke my heart man...

Daniel

amazing work. thank you for doing this.

Jason Romero

Definitely the best episode of the series. Antonio is doing incredible work and I hope this goes on YouTube. It's crazy how people not from the Bay really only see the Fox News clips. There used to be a guy on my steps in SF every so often. He never caused trouble and was clearly ashamed of doing drugs as he would cover himself with a blanket when on the stairs. I never knew what to do other than offering him food but it's amazing to see people like Antonio dedicating their lives to this issue. I think this series did a great job at highlighting how the drug problem is not the fault of these individuals and more the Pharma industry, inequality and a lack of empathy.

Gavin510

Antonio's words are eloquent and vulnerable. Truly a gift to hear. Thank you Channel 5 for always displaying the humanity at the core of the story

Patrick Melillo

oh man Antonio is real hero. a good person saving lives out there. bless him

unsui

Please please please make that Antonio interview a stand-alone video.

Quincy

Wow, that was heavy. Thanks for sharing

Sebastian Montes

A great interview with Antonio- This simpleton BS that guys like Raw Ricky goes around using on people to basically just be abusive and feel superior to by shaming addicts down at their worse and in the streets. If Raw Ricky believed the Bs he's spewing? Let's start by putting him in prison for dealing cocaine to kids/adults. but now that HE"S clean? it should be "party Over!' haha. Can you spell hypocrite Ricky??. He's clearly a low I.Q. mother*cker. Antonio understands the nuances and contradictions of this common attitude in the U.S. that has been pounded into us since elementary school and more importantly DOES NOT WORK. You should do more of these kind of interviews. You are welcome to interview me, I lost my leg to fentanyl and my brother to alcohol. I have waaay more experience than most in this because I am 60 now and have survived different generations of drug use going all the way back to the 70's. I've seen all the trends and all the failed attempts by law enforcement /government and all the phony lightweight celebrities who lend their opinions to this massive problem but never goes anywhere, it's worse now than EVER. Punishment doesnt work, addicts are already punished. Only Gabor mate really understands where all this comes from. Evryone should read his work.

Michael Finley

Damn that shit made me cry hearing Antonio. His perspective is so real, true, and full of love.

yaboi

Interesting how Andrew can gain trust of people in need by listening. People who would otherwise trust no one. The world needs more people like Andrew.

William Terry

This is some real sagacity. Antonio is one of those guys society really needs. Otherwise we are fucked!

Jonas Le Loup

& Ricky is for sure just a grifter who found another hustle

Z

Antonio is awesome. Thank you for this piece

Z

Great ending to the series, well done Channel 5 team!!! Also serious love for Antonio and fuck Ricky

Moriah

This was incredible - great to see you back and making eye-opening content. It is stuff like this that helps change minds. Antionio is the real deal.

Myers Hurt

Ricky is an opportunist taking advantage of others and their situations.

CLE_DEV

Raw Ricky searching real quick to make up a story about his lowest point lmao

Christian C

You should provide donation information/links for the harm reduction organizations you have visited and vetted in the video descriptions, I'm sure a lot of Bay Area residents on here would love to support.

Marc Heller

Fantastic series yet again man. That ending hit hard. Antonio you are an absolute legend

Taylor Lyons

Wow Thank you . keep up the good work you are making a difference in the world for good.🔥🙏🪄

katrina

"damn. its that easy. how human we all are."

s_archives

Thank you for the humanization you’re bringing to some of the darkest places in our country.

Sküch

That was fucking heavy. Antonio is the rare breed that lives what he talks. Not doing it for clicks or subs, but because he believes in it. Fuck that other clown.

Josh W

Tell me you have a superiority complex without telling me . . .

love this series, so interesting to see the perspectives from the actual people on the street instead of from some FOX news talking head

Sean Andrews

Great work man!

John Pierson

Keep doing what you’re doing man! This made me sign up for patreon. Excellent work.

Justin Smith

@Dan Rustle it's pretty well known that humans are flawed, we all make mistakes. To think of yourself as somehow above the rest of humanity is hubris and folly.

Eric Burbeck

Dude u lied there is no pimp episode smh

cheeshmuffinpankakes

Just wanted to add: I think it is a great idea to put these up (part 5 and 6 that is) on YouTube after a while. It is just such a must-see that I would love to show to my friends.

Buddits

Wow, this series was absolutely incredible! Made me sign up on patreon and made it feel worth it. I am sitting here crying.

Buddits

This narcam guy was an amazing way to wrap this up. What a powerful series

Dan Cella

What a heavy ending. Thank you

Arham Nezami

Responding to Dan Rustle, is this satire? You telling me you watched this video and still choosing superiority ? Dawg read a book on solocioligy

Arham Nezami

This was an incredible series. Thank you for this one

Mathilda Tingemar

Imagine believing that you are incapable of making the same mistakes as another person. Find some compassion. You may find yourself in terrible circumstances and feel you’re not worthy of love or life. And there will be people with the same mindset as you have now. Don’t be that person, be humble and kind.

Austin Wisnia

It’s deeper than that man, watch the vid.

Nick Kachur

Keep telling yourself that lie. I’m better than that dude in every way imaginable. I made better decisions in life and actually have self control.

Dan Rustle

This one is sooo strong and should definitely be uploaded to YT for more to see. Antonio has an incredible voice in this matter and is a ray of compassion that is much needed towards drug addicts, now more than ever. Thanks Andrew for this incredible journalism.

Page Dante

Beautifully said

sosOaklandish

Hey great series!! If you want to further enhance your perspective on SF's Tenderloin marginalized communities check out a writter called William T. Vollmann. I actually think his type of writting and your type of journalism are very similar. At least the end result of both your and Vollmann's projects is giving voice to communities that through innacurate media representation are consistently degraded and marginalized in popular imagination.

Adrianos Roussis

Ain’t nobody better than anybody man.

Nick Kachur

Keep crushing Drew

Alex Crystallize

Damn that’s a bizarre take for the first half of your novel response. You seem to have a nihilistic take on the statement, which is why you don’t see how it could be true, when the statement could also be used to reinforce morals and society by holding murderers accountable for taking away lives and hurting others as well as taking down pharmaceutical companies for profiting off the very drugs and devices that are needed to fight the epidemic that they started (like Andrew highlighted) because nobody is better than anybody. No one should be in a better situation and enjoy the spoils of life and freedom because they are more willing to take advantage and/or hurt others for their own gain, and no one should be shunned or judged for making mistakes that mostly harm the individual; especially because that individual probably has people who love and care about them just like you and I have.

KyleLee

God’s work on this one fr

Marcus Hart

not going to lie - I had some doubts on this channel's re-launch. But after this series, those doubts are gone. AC and the gang are coming back realer than ever and I appreciate you all for it

Riley

When I was in high school I dreamed of driving around the country and interviewing random people because it sounded like the best way to learn about to world, luckily for my parents Andrew thought of that first. Thank you for sharing reality.

Jack Sarmento

need this one on youtube in the future fr. people needa hear this and see the emotion. mf's HATE the homeless in vancouver and they just need love and time.

Lukas

Thanks. I needed to see this today. And Antonio if you see this, thank you for sharing your story

Ty

I'm not even in the us but this gives a face to the fentanyl crisis that we read in the news. To have empathy towards other human beings seems like a huge ask these days. Tough.

Ricardo de Cillo

So glad you’re back man. Series was incredible

William Stone

Wow😔 keep it up!

Amye Eli

The work you put into this shit is incredible bro

Liam Trippi

thank you for the work you do andrew. thank you for shedding light on these folks day to day. thank you for risking your own safety to report the harsh realities. thank you for the truth.

Seanii

Damn Andrew, you are the the best example of how the voice of journalism should sound & be heard. It’s creators like you that are constantly bringing back my faith in humanity when I feel all hope is lost. We need a revolution, and I honestly believe we can get there with people like you leading the way. I hope you get the chance to read this and it keeps you motivated to be the journalist we all need in these dark, but hopeful times. Much love, Thank you

Jacob Uhing

Great series, excited to see what comes next.

Chums McGuffey

I just wanted to say thank you for giving Antonio a voice. As a recovering fentanyl addict that works in a rehab, I wish I could have this man speak at my job. Too many of the broken people that come to rehab have no one, I just hope another suffering addict realizes there’s a family in recovery. They never have to be alone again. Dead people can’t recover. Using is just surviving, these people deserve to live instead.

Seth Martin

a beautiful way to end the SF arc, thanks Andrew for bringing eyes to the human experience of Bay Area, not from the tech bro or trust fund kids hanging out at Dolores park perspective, but the people who's life only get harder and harder through the intense wave of changes. I hope SF will come back strong one day!

Urdnot Wrex

Antonio is a real man. Any one who is crying over their cause is a real human and that man is a real inspiration

deadbrain

This is so heavy. Thank you for sharing this story

Hilarie Puppington-Thompson

Thank you Andrew for sharing the real SF with everyone and shedding light on the medical issue of drug addiction caused by rich ignorant narcissistic pharmaceutical executives. What’s worse about this is the complete lack of accountability. We punish the victims of drug use who became addicts due to the pain killers often prescribed to them by trusted physicians. However the companies and executives responsible for creating this issue never have to admit wrongdoing and just have to write a check that’s a single digit percentage of their net worth. How do people not see the obvious pattern here? It’s fucking bullshit. I’m glad to be a part of some actually real journalism. Thanks again Andrew and team 🫶✌️

“Reality is for people who can’t face drugs” - Tom Waits

Mike Nichols

i would be wary of comparing disabilities here... agreed, there is much more societal shame on drug users but folks with disabilities face many other unjust views from society and administrative violence by systems designed for us, rather than with us.

Peyton Sefick

"Ain't nobody better than anybody, man." A true human. Inexplicably, in my mind at least, Antonio didn't relapse despite more of the same shit piling up, begging for escape. I don't envy what they went through to attain it, but I absolutely envy Antonio's latest ability to shoulder life.

Miccalo

lol

oly

Look at all the comments this weirdo posted on this video too lmao 😭

Ado

What about the part with the pimp?

D

I am wary of the ending ethical claim in this video, "Nobody better than anybody." I think it makes sense in the state that Antonio is in, where he is obviously still experiencing immense grief and processing trauma in a situation that is destructive to the people on drugs, rather than allying with them and creating relationship incentives to become clean. There are other factors that contribute to this, such as the wealth gap and joblessness. To Antonio's last statement, I think this cannot be true, otherwise, we would have no reason to prosecute pharmaceutical companies. We could have no justice because action would not contribute to any ethical claim about a person. A non-redeeming murderer would be the same as a redeeming murderer. There could be no ethics, or principles of organizing ourselves in our personal relationships and in larger social organizations. Such a world would be chaotic, and the world of San Francisco is chaotic to many people. The last part of this series solidified for me that being dependent upon these substances is unlike anything that anyone who has not experienced it could understand. That is why it is like a disease and why we should never shame them or make light of their condition. We do not shame people with ALS, PTSD, or any other disease or psychological issues that are beyond their control. They need compassionate help and social guidance, not shame.

Garrett McCampbell

Antonio is an extremely impressive and resilient person, and is using his trauma to propel himself forward. Got nothing but respect for this guy, thank you for giving him a spotlight AC

Enid Strict

If you look on their Youtube, eventually content goes there. First parts of the SF footage already is there free to watch

Hey andrew, how does it feel accepting patreon money from a bunch of NPCs?

Fucc

How am I not? Because I observe what happens in the world? I don't understand why you are getting emotional and throwing ad-hominems, anyways continue your tantrum. Just if anybody read this, this emotional boy deletes his comments when he has inconsitencies. Edit: Oh, he's one of those trolls.

Chris Embry

he speaks how most of the SF natives and bay area natives feel about it, we have been betrayed by politicians, police, fire dept, etc etc, they sold us out where we fled off to cheaper cities or even states, shits lame, fuck the tech industry even though we here right now.

Yuri Sagastume

damn girl you poppin off lil mama

Yuri Sagastume

How am I an asshole? I actually live in this socioeconomic group and acknowledge there's a side of society that doesn't give a shit about anybody but themselves or their CIRCLE. They'll ditch you because they can't fathom but only blame that they simply should have just NOT taken the drug. I'm curious, what are you even going about? Lol.

Chris Embry

"Ain't nobody better than anybody" Damn, this hits home. Unfortunately there's a "large" amount of people that can't comprehend this.

Chris Embry

This guy is the embodiment of bay area lingo lol ok that shit was overly popping they shut that shit down yeeeee

John Gotti

Wow, this one was powerful

Ado

The lack of life fulfillment of these addicts is a symptom of the sysiphean grind of modern life. The same narcissism of wider society that drives these poor souls to despair is the same narcissism that means I don't have any fucking friends on this shitty narcissistic west coast society.

Fucc

this guy is a beautiful, honest, open human

David Weisberger

Okay motherfuckers, storytime. I work with recovering addicts and you know what the problems are consistently? A: You don't care about your own well-being. B: Nobody else cares about your own well-being so therefore you don't care about your own well-being. C: This lack of care leads to a voidance of the soul, and a bunch of motherfuckers who never leave their locality and see just how infinitely vast beyond them the world is, so much so we forget the compassion demanded from our persistence as infinitely small specs in an infinite universe. To any numbskull, that's like speaking greek, but fact is this inner city drugged out whoredom is a symptom of the lack of love in our society.

Fucc

Antonio what you do matters and you are a badass ❤️

PenjaminFranklin

This last portion should for sure go onto youtube, or just be included. The conversation at the end shifted my own opinions on things, and better informed me on how hard it actually is for some people. Very good journalism overall, thank you for this.

Crow Vi

fuck man you're good

Ryan Roddy

Antonio's message was powerful. No one is better than the next person. Drug addiction can happen to anyone. I seen multiple friends get hooked wheteher they started in college or in the streets. People will find any way to escape reality or pain. Ive learned not to judge these folks, i hope they can get the help they need. Keep doing what you are doing Antonio. Wish he was on tv instead of that douche ricky.

Hek

Hey Andrew, hope you see this, my friends know you but I don't. Just wanna say, stick with it, don't let the world get you down, we're all always improving, and it's not right to be held to a fire for idiot things we did when we were a lot younger than we are now. You've got guts so stick with it, and my only thought is that if only you and everyone other journalist were able to do more because this country is headed to an extremely dark place and there is nothing we can do about it as singular actors. It needs to be a collective movement toward prosperity, as dated as that might sound.

Fucc

Antonio really speaks a powerful message

Ethan Hamilton

Y’all just mad you weren’t here earlier. Free Jack.

nicklaus4444

The best journalism Ive seen. It’s gross how the government breaks everyones legs by making it impossible to afford things. They spend infinite money driving up inflation spending money on anything that will line politicians pockets like the pandemic. Look at these big pharma companies that forced you to take the vaccine. The government is flooding everything with cash. Housing prices go sky high and people eventually can’t take the stress and give into the drugs around them for an easy destresser. The government is making it impossible to live a healthy life. They create the health centers to help those addicted and then they want to rip the crutch away from people that are one bad dose away from dying. It’s gross how twisted it all is. This battle against death wouldn’t need to be fought if the immense power of the federal and state governments didn’t exist. This country is slowly being consumed by a communist regime. It is not real capitalism. A real capitalist society does not have such an overbearing gov’t breaking your legs, handing you a crutch and taking it away.

Pimpotastic

Been living a very sheltered bourgeois kinda life and that was the attitude on that side of the fence. Thinking you're better etc. November '23 comes round, things go a little sideways for me, I'm on my way from therapy still researching some stuff about addiction. Some guy sits down next to me on the train - this is Zurich we're talking about, middle of the day - preparing a line of coke on the screen of his phone. A handful of tech bros enter and sit down opposite of us. It takes them exactly 6.3 seconds of their valuable tech bro brain time to assess the situation. One of them makes a blowing gesture. The group bursts into mechanical laughter. This oh so very clever joke is understood, from tech brother to tech brother. How very cruel I think. I hear a snorting sound. Our reanimated friend then goes on to aimlessly pacing up and down the car, euphoric, enjoying his music off these kind of cheap wired ear plugs you don’t quite see anymore these days. How very beautiful, I think. In a long time I haven't witnessed something like this, let alone something so human. In this brief moment I feel truly, personally connected with him. I stop looking away, instead, direct a kind smile at him, perhaps trying to signal to him somehow that I do care and I understand his pain. What he is going through. We're not so different, I think. They usually do a rigorous job of separating the homeles, the addicts, the oh so annoying beggars from US. WE, the properly functioning worker bees in this city. WE, the law abiding citizens. WE, who moralize misfortune, an ancient idea. I think the authorities don't want US to humanize the unfortunate. They need us to believe in the system. The system that failed THEM. Zum Glück wir nicht. WE do not have a cocaine problem.

I hope this last episode opens some eyes. Scrolling through some of these comments on previous episodes, seeing how critcal people are of others struggling... it's heartbreaking. "Ain't nobody better than anybody, man." The themesong for this whole series should be Everyday Struggle by B.I.G.

Heavy interview. Antonio offers great perspective to wrap up the SF series. Keep on sharing!
