San Francisco Streets (Part 5/6) - Jack the Bipper Resells

Here is the final installment of our work with Jack the Bipper, from 'bipping a car' downtown, to reselling stolen goods at an illegal flea market in the Mission District of San Francisco.

Many of you may notice that Jack is un-blurred in the video.

This morning, Jack called me to let me know he'd seen the first installment of our series 'Jack the Bipper,' and that he was pleased with his portrayal. He also let me know that the City finally decided to crack down on him - a few weeks ago, he was sentenced to 4.5 years in Prison for a variety of charges.

He thinks using facial blur is too 'Gangland'-esque and believes that it is important to allow himself to be humanized and hopes that this documentary will serve as  as a cautionary tale in regard to a life of drugs and crime.

Hope you enjoy.

face ain’t blurred!!!!!

Cesar Hernandez

Thanks for documenting these parts of life that are ignored by the masses. Growing up around folk like jack and seeing them end up dead or in prison and hearing people that never knew them talk down on them for their poor decisions due to their circumstances is the worst. It’s not over until it’s over and we all deserve redemption.

Travis Bridges

jack has a lot of work to do and i hope he gets his shit together. But im glad he is paying for his crimes. This stealing shit is getting out of control people need to be held accountable.

Dabu

This was the one that made me subscribe. Good stuff! You guys came back with harder!!

User

Almost cried at the end, puts a new perspective on people doing crime in the city. This guy was in a doom loop to continue his drug habit. And it makes me wonder about the failure of politics within SF in the eyes of “compassion” to allow active drug use as a person’s free choice. I lived in SF for six years, went there for college and moved out in the beginning of the year. Lot of people controlling the status quo and politics are people living in incredibly nice neighborhoods, while they leave the poorer, original SF residents, and just generally people of color to deal with issues they are not fixing. I love San Francisco, the culture outside of tech is worth saving!

Adam

Yo! This video made me jump on this Patreon. Really good man! I get the raw journalism VICE use to put out years ago. Keep it coming!

Stewart

Great ending. Just keeps getting better n better

Alvaro

That's all you took away from the video, huh? 😭

Monkeh Gaming

Ya know I thought jack was a pos at first but at the end of the day he’s just trying to get by. Seems like a good dude. Free jack!

Neon Seal

This is the fringe media that vice used to be so good at

Levi

Damn Free Jack!!!

Julien Bleser

This was so freaking sad. That poor guy was just so lost.

Steve Hubbard

I did. So he got caught for these specific acts?

Reed Stiles

Listen to the last thing Andrew said on this episode

Brock Martin

Dude was cool being unmasked?

Reed Stiles

Amazing man, what a cool look. Thanks for sharing

Guevon

this man produces quality work; thought-provoking, showing the humanity of those who are otherwise deemed criminals/worthless, those who are willing to use any means to try to survive. By virtue of just being willing to speak with these people and let them share their truth, AC provides a perspective that is inherently empathetic and filled with humanity

TDman21

That meal between you and Jack at the end was the most heartwarming moment. Inspirational.

Eammon Logan

I'm surprised how little money there is for thieves, pimps and dealers. San Francisco spends nearly a billion dollars every year on services for people like this, with over 1,200 non-profits and yet nothing changes. If America used a fraction of its massive wealth to afford basic security for the people at the bottom, you have to think there wouldn't be such demand or desire for this lifestyle

Dalton Boehm

Everyone‘s rooting for Jack ❤️ please update more if you remember sometime in the future

Moriah

if anyone got Jack's contact share it and let's put some money on his books and encourage him to get clean.

Jonathan Strength

jack real af and I would def be his friend. Especially if he was clean

Jonathan Strength

Hopefully that’s rock bottom time for Jack and he’ll get clean and sober, start a better life

Nas

Yo maybe unblurred is cool but while admitting to poking someone?? That’s just violating omerta on yourself..

elilauffer

Wow

Gary Eddy

I used to love hanging around 24th and mission. Tons of good bars and dispensaries that I would go to. Don't know how I never got bipped cause I would be the dumb mf with earpods in at night time. Also I hope Jack is able to get out of jail and get clean. Seems like a really down ass dude that ended up having to do what he needed to in order to survive. Not my call if it was wrong or right but hopefully things change for the better in his life.

Alexander Hernani

When the cops told yall to move out the walkway lmfao what is SF

bat kyak

free the homies

Cary Carter

They explain this in the description. Jack is cool with it.

Jarred Sturges

God damn that jack was a hell raiser, but likeable. I hope he survives man x

george wesley

The full documentary on YouTube is more refined and edited from what I recall - it includes some additional narration and context that's befitting of a documentary. I don't think it includes any extra footage but I'd still highly recommend it (even throw on in the background) so you can get an idea of the finished product they're putting out - they're stepping up their documentary game since This Place Rules

Chris D'Antonio

Sad Jack went to prison. Esp. sad for his son. His son will probably never know him. God bless them both I hope he gets clean and reconnects with positive people in his life.

Dan Lord

Did you finish the video

Antonioio

Damn man, are you able to stay in contact with him? I want to stay in the know about how he's doing. I really hope he can figure things out in there.

Mathilda Tingemar

💯💯💯

Bheem

this is fucking beautiful, i hope Jack will be able to at use the resources in jail to find a way to get his life together. And with SF politics and its resident's political stance slowly shifting, who knows what will happen down the line?

Urdnot Wrex

oop nvm

Isaac James Lewis

you forgot the blur

Isaac James Lewis

yeah fr if editing sees this

Isaac James Lewis

read the description of the video

Nils

What was the point in blurring his face in the first parts?? You just exposed him

Hilarie Puppington-Thompson

14:13+

Miccalo

I'm so thankful you exist, Andrew. You + 5's coverage is so raw, it lets me see how poorly so many are living all over the country. It also exposes the humanity behind wherever their hurt misguides them in life. Your work inspires me to try and help humanity however possible.

Miccalo

Just got to the part where you explained it lmao

Kellen Crosby

Soon as you walked up to that market I thought “no way they’re gonna be cool with white guys filming them” and sure enough

homebrew901

i absolutely love this interview. one of the best episodes of anything you’ve released solely based on the humanizing aspect of jack. truly remarkable

Jayden Loper

Channel 5 hopped bart you so certified

Gavin Metcalf

There was beautifully poetic moment at the end, when the camera crew were across the street and outside the restaurant. We saw their reflections in the muni bus that went by, and we saw you eating with Jack beyond the window. Those moments captured the relationship we all have with your projects, and your relationship with your interviewees, in that we are watching from outside, safe in our own little bubbles, but you are right there in the heart of the moment, truly connecting with the people you meet. It was the same when the crew scattered when Jack was hitting his fent, and you just sat there. You are making genuine connections with the folks you meet, and are not going to leave them in their weak or dangerous moments. You are fully committed to them in those moments, and in some ways forever. Thank you for your work, both in journalism, and for humanity itself.

Richard Springfield

taking off the glasses is really classy, my dawg

Javier Castro

Bro you are a terrible person lmaoooooo

Jordan Wilson

only week I spent in SF I got my window smashed, with nothing of real value inside

Fucc

There’s no way Andrew tried chilaquiles for the first time 😮‍💨🔥🔥🔥🔥

PenjaminFranklin

No longer censoring his face?

Eric McCann

Well said.

dwardo

I hope that Jack can find some peace and possibly the ability to start taking the steps to be the father that he wants to be to his son. Its interesting how much the government doesn't want to acknowledge shelter as a human right yet literally the common denominator to ALL OF THIS is these poor un-housed folks who are forced into a "by any means necessary" posture. Obviously they are committing the crimes but listen to Jack talk about his son, the system has failed him, he still has a heart.

NF

This is the best video series you guys have ever put out.

Koolio 777

Free Jack. Hopefully he can come out and turn his life around. He actually seems like a genuine dude just is consumed by his addiction.

Koolio 777

I was gonna inquire about the exposed face scenario. Dude already nipped that in the bud. He'll probably get half time. Hopefully he'll change up his life. Some people need it for themselves. 💯

Young D3niro

Thanks

Seth Laster

Life is crazy. Cool to have someone capture it.

Jay

Channel 5 is the best at humanizing every encounter. Andrew please, keep this up.

Luke Fender

This whole SF chapter has been my favorite work you’ve done yet. In a world hellbent on selling “content” it’s refreshing to see real human journalism surviving. Possibly the most genuine and unbiased look at a complex and heartbreaking side of California. Hard to watch kind people go down a bad road, hopefully Jack can turn things around when he gets out.

Dillon James

That egg yolk though

Simeon Ayton

Straight up

Nathan Kravitz

Yooooooo where’s the blur faces?!

Ryan Todd

What made you write some stupid shit like that?

David Wojcicki

Last part hurt a ton. You always want people to just get better, but that’s not always the way it goes.

chiken

Not sure if you watched until the end- but he’s in jail until 2027 now.

chiken

Thank you!

Devin Beck

really well presented & edited, loved this whole series so far, thank you :)

Stevie Milburn

Read the video description

George Shank

Damn some people here acting like others just decided to randomly wake up and choose violence, while probably sitting in the comfort of their own homes and have never faced danger or a trauma in their life.

Monkeh Gaming

Go rest up big homie. You deserve some sleep after being so on edge for weeks

Monkeh Gaming

It sucks when you barely have any choice in the matter :/

Monkeh Gaming

Maybe he was talking hygiene lol

Monkeh Gaming

Wow, has Andrew's documentation not taught you anything?

Monkeh Gaming

What happened to the blur?

Seth Laster

He’s obviously not the sharpest fella.

RVG

Well yeah, If he was already caught and charged why hide it now

Paulo Williams

Props to Andrew for getting the footage. Idk how you can stand being around these shitheads for more than 5 min.

RVG

homebrew901

Really great stuff Andrew. Is there a possibility you be doing a follow up phone call interview with Jack while he is in prison? Curious to hear his take on it and how the prison assists addicts.

Gavin Crehan

Definitely follow up with him, he seems to have a decent head on his shoulders. He has the initiative and incentive to get his life back on track. Although unlikely for someone in his shoes I hope he gets to the point where he can see and support his son

David Wojcicki

Ooohhhh that just hurts my soul to see this kid !!

Julie Tulley

Best $5 you can spend on the internet.

Peter H

Bro be careful!

jooby

Great job humanizing the homie Jack and spread awareness that opioid use can be cause to spiral in ones life. Shoutout Channel 5 showing the the real shit that you won't find anywhere else.

Cameron Lee

Yo this series has been a trip. Keep up the work man.

Eddie

This shit needs to be shown in schools. Incredible work.

Dillon

free the homie jack

Elias Amin

Hope you catch up with him when he gets out, maybe even visit him halfway thru

Ben Fuchs

Does the smell test really work for milk?

Sküch

Amazing work Channel 5 crew! This work feels truly meaningful, thank you for opening me to the realities that go unseen for one reason or another. The more people see things like this, the more people are waking up to why our societies seem to not work properly. We must look at our darkness in order to shine the light and fix what is broken. Way too many people choose to close their eyes to things they believe they can't fix or afraid to intervene but what's been seen can't be unseen. God Bless you Andrew and the rest of Channel 5 news!

Roma 2.0

nah, they just upload it in parts here, instead of one long video, im pretty shure.

Robert Hulligan

That enforcer must've been crazy scary Nice job on the vid again guys

Kevin

Do they though? Jack said bipping was never his thing but then admitted he started to teach Google employees a lesson. He's an opportunist who's probably never worked a day of honest work in his life. He's the only person interviewed for this series so far who had actual concrete things they were planning to do to get clean. All the other bippers were beaming with pride.

Dante Armstrong

No I don’t think so, only a few episodes that are here summarized in a 1h docu

Marc Huber

Sad

Joey

Also crazy how Catholicism brainwashes people. Like what he said about being catholic is so wild.

Nathan Kravitz

I´m so glad to have finally subcsribed to channel 5 patreon. I live in Europe and I love how you guys allow me and everyone else in the world to get a glimpse behind the curtain of the "american dream" and basically all the other distorted utopian imagery that most people try to portray in social media, movies etc. Really looking forward to learn more through your documentaries and maybe even see you guys in different parts of the world as well one day. I can´t believe I´ve been wasting so much money for the common media streamin platforms :c I have so much respect for the way channel 5 always allows people to be themselves and is just so honest and pure! Thanks for keeping it 55th and much love to everyone involved in this <3

Petrit Zeneli

It’s funny he said he’s clean after getting out of jail but hits the fetty on the Bart and scored some rock lol

Nathan Kravitz

Sleep deprivation

Channel 5

The "enforcer" at 24th and market is scary, you can see his gun in his hoodie. This suggests the fencing operations that are happening at the BART stations are more organized than they look.

rividz

Props Jack, hold your head!

SammieTalls

Damn, the theme in all of this series is that these dudes want a better life. Jack seems like a nice soul that got eaten alive by the city. I hope he and the other bipper homie find their way sooner rather than later.

Jerry Splice

damn, putting his life at risk for $95 lol. brutal.

Ado

Chillaquiles in the Mission; AC with a keen eye for the dopest shit! Thank you for the honest representation of SF. Hopefully you can keep in touch with Jack during his sentence.

DW

Some of the best content on the internet. Really, really good, thank you for making this guys. Hope Jack figures his shit out.

Josh Greer

What can I say.. I cancelled my Disney+, Amazon Prime, Netflix because it wasn't worth the money.. But Channel 5 news is worth every cent. Thank you Andrew and team.. great work. I hope Jack manages to right the ship and stay the course to get clean and be reunited with his son. I know how he must feel.

Just human

Great vid as always!

z dawg

I really hope jack finds real happiness I grew up in Fresno, we definitely don't got it as bad as the bay area but been around shit like this most my life, we're all out here just trying to get out the struggle in CA

superserio offical

Andrew's hands pretty shaky when they're eating together. Anyone else notice this? Probably just nerves.

Buz Lee

Damn. That was heavy and beautiful.

Gabe Martinico

Whats Jack the bips ig..needa support da homie

Derek Eastep

Long Live Jack the Bipper

John Paul Cruz

Look at that. Spend a little time with anyone and you'll find their humanity. I hope Jack is doing okay.

demlet

Yeah, dude was Hella shaky on the YouTube documentary.

Anthony Allen

I love how a meal between two different walks of life can just sit down, Chill and share. I hope Jack Bips continues his journey to sobriety behind bars .🙏🏽

Fire Flores

It's dark and disappointing but stories like this need to be shown to more people who have no clue as to what's going on

Hez

Maybe take 30 seconds to read the description.

aamiti

P

If I watch only Patreon and not YouTube, am I missing out on content? Cause I just saw a 1h docu on yt

Martino

Gotcha, yea just saw the ending note

Josh Guinan

He doesn’t want to be. He was just sentenced for separate incidents and wants his story out there, prefers to not be blurred.

Channel 5

great ep, hope jack fares well in the system

Dillon K

free da homie jack

AJ Reid

Is his face supposed to not be censored

Josh Guinan

Couldn't tell he was a junkie? You can hear it in his voice
