In dragon society, a marital contract grants those dragons who are party to it equal status under the law. Dragon lords can have as many consorts as they want, but to maintain their exalted status above the other dragons they cannot get married to any of them. The dragon lords of the past had many consorts, and although all of these consorts were officially equal to each other in status, in reality most of them rarely got close to the dragon lord and were simply ordered to perform the tasks that neither the dragon lord nor the favored consorts were willing to do. It was an open secret that many of the dragon lords of the past did next to nothing for their kingdom...
When Torch—a dragon lord who had been (in)famously single and a stickler for the rules for most of his career—announced his upcoming wedding, his subjects thought he had lost his mind. He knew very well that by getting married he would forever alter the structure of the government. A new, incredibly powerful position would be created with no precedent, a second dragon would be elevated outside of the formal caste system, and the door to creating powerful familial alliances between prominent clans and dragon lords was officially wide open.
Torch, however, no longer cared. Blaze had told him that she wanted to be married one day and that it wasn't a dream she could give up on. It was outrageous for her to say such a thing, knowing she had the dragon lord's undivided attention despite her disability. Her parents implored her to quit while she was ahead. No one expected Torch to go along with her wish. But his retirement was on the horizon. He had spent his whole life dutifully carrying out his thankless job and, by Bahamut, he was sick of putting his kingdom first. He was going to be truly selfish for once. He decided he was strong enough to deal with the consequences.
The wedding was extravagant. Every dragon was invited. Many dragons wanted to see what would happen if thousands of them did show up, expecting it to be mayhem. There was enough food for everyone and the crowd remained controlled somehow. Multiple heads of state were present. Torch was decked out in his fanciest suit of armor and Blaze was covered in jewels from head to toe. The event was a giant, flashing invitation to start trouble and no one dared to call the dragon lord's bluff.
In the human world, Blaze's wedding attire was equally as impressive and risqué as it was in the Dragon Lands. Her dress was handsewn and cost more than $50,000. Being a successful businessman who was as smitten with his bride as his dragon counterpart was, Torch spared no expense to make her happy.
