My Current Thoughts on Daily Routines

Hey legends

Today I wanted to share some thoughts on my daily routine — specifically how it’s always evolving and why I’ve been shifting away from the idea of a “perfect” morning routine.

🌀 Routines Are Always Changing

One of the biggest takeaways for me lately is that my routine is constantly adapting — depending on how I feel, how creative I’m feeling, how much I’m touring, and just where my head’s at. There’s no one-size-fits-all structure that works forever.

🧹 The Power of Taking Things Out

For a long time, I felt like I needed to add more into my mornings to make them productive — meditation, cold plunges, walking outside, etc. Trust me, i've done it all.

But recently I’ve realized that less is more.

Now I listen to my gut and focus only on the essentials — drink water, shower, maybe stretch — and then get straight into work. That’s when I’m clearest and most productive.

☕️ Everyone’s Different

Some people, like my girlfriend, thrive with slower, more mindful starts to the day. And that’s awesome! The key is figuring out what works for you — not just copying what’s trending online.

🧠 Productivity vs. Progress

I’ve been trying to move away from hustle culture.

Instead of obsessing over productivity, I’ve reframed my mindset around progress and growth — not just ticking boxes or making money, but feeling fulfilled and moving forward in ways that matter to me.

⏰ My Ideal Day (When Touring Isn’t Involved)

• Wake up around 5–5:30 AM

• Dive straight into focused work — emails, music, planning — before 8 AM

• After that, I’ll segment my day depending on whether it’s:

• A music/writing day

• A content/social media day

• A day for admin or errands

This structure helps me feel ahead of the day and in control.

✈️ Touring Destroys Routine

Touring messes with everything — sleep, energy, mood.

After a couple of back-to-back weekends and sleepless nights, I was wrecked. Lack of sleep throws your hormones out of whack (cortisol, serotonin, melatonin, etc.) and can make you feel depressed, unmotivated, and flat-out exhausted.

So now I try to be extra intentional about protecting sleep and easing back into a rhythm after big tour weekends.

⌛️ Time Blocking + Time Tracking

A couple of practical tools I’ve been loving:

1. Time Blocking

Focus on one thing at a time. No multitasking!!

Whether it’s writing, editing, admin, or errands — I try to keep things separate to stay focused and make real progress.

2. 15-Minute Time Tracking

I track my day in 15-minute blocks using a Google Sheet. Every 15 mins, I jot down what I’ve been doing (just a few words).

It acts like a reverse to-do list, so I can look back and actually see what I’ve accomplished — super satisfying and motivating.

That’s where I’m at with routines right now. Would love to hear what’s been working (or not working) for you too — drop a comment

Thanks for being here

This is awesome! I recently realized how important routine is!

Thank you so much for this, seriously. I was in the crowd for your ÆON:MODE set in DC last weekend and I knew you were just getting back from MMW and Beyond Wonderland but man you still gave it 110% for us AND you’re still making gems like this. You’re the goat JP!

Seaquel

Didn't expect that, but man this was inspiring! I love the idea of growth over productivity!

Maypops

I need to check out motion! Heard about it before. Love all this

BLANKE

Love this topic! Self described “productivity nerd” 🙋🏻‍♀️. I work a full time job with 2-3x/month travel (plus self inflicted fun trips), am learning production (enrolled in a training/coaching program) and try to balance family/life- all that to say I’ve had to be super intentional with my time. I use the Motion AI app that has been really helpful to stick to daily goals/habits (“studio time”, etc) and works around the changing daily priorities. 🤓. I love your “less is more” approach-you have to make space for what is most important.
