Quick Tip - Chord Voicing's

Important little tip regarding how you put your chords together

Key Points on Chord Voicing's & Stacking:

Chord voicings matter – Proper placement of notes within a chord stack is crucial for creating a strong foundation.

Less is more – Using only 2–3 notes at a time in a chord stack can create a more emotive and impactful sound compared to stacking 7+ voices.

Tension & emotion – Understanding inversions and intervals helps in creating tension that resolves naturally.

Peddling note technique – Keeping one note consistent throughout a chord progression adds stability and cohesion.

Chords informed by melody – Chord choices can be influenced by lead melodies, making them feel more natural within a track.

Finding the right interval relationships – Small shifts in note placement can create strong emotional connections within a progression.

Cadence and resolution – Certain notes act as “leading tones” that guide the listener back to the root chord, making the progression feel satisfying.

My Workflow Approach:

1. Start with the bass note – Figure out the root movement before adding upper voices.

2. Build gradually – Add intervals that create emotion, focusing on harmonic movement.

3. Experiment – Try different positions and tensions to find what feels right in context.

4. Use leading tones & cadences – Guide the listener through natural resolutions.

Hope this helps <3

Comments

its interesting how sus chords seems to go so well with supersaws. On a piano they sound totally awkward. 7ths and 9ths sound also so big on supersaws, but on piano they sound too jazzy. I think the theory term for them is clusters
