The FAA recently released updates to the Aviation Instructor Handbook that will bring this book, finally, into the 21st century. Although still just a small part of what it takes to be a truly effective educator, the FAA has stepped up to the plate with a wonderful edition change to this aging handbook. Besides a new front cover and fresh new pictures, here is what you can expect to see in the new edition.
- The reorganization of all prior edition chapters into a more logical sequence.
- The term “Student” has been replaced with “Learner” throughout.
- References to “Airman Certification Standards” have been added, alongside “Practical Test Standards.”
- Scenario-based training, relative to assessments, has been expanded upon (see chapter 6).
- The term “Cockpit” has been replaced with “Flight deck” throughout.
- An exciting new chapter has been added on “Teaching Practical Risk Management During Flight Instructions.”
- Appendix C has been updated to account for changes in the submission process for an Airman Certificate and/or Rating Application through IACRA.
- Appendix C has been updated to account for Remote Pilots.
- Examples of endorsements have been removed from Appendix C. (Refer to AC 61- 65, Certification: Pilots and Flight and Ground Instructors, for a listing of suggested endorsements.
- Appendix E, Relationships of Decision-Making Models has been removed.

The FAA did not publish a single file download to the handbook, and this helps with download speeds with accessing certain parts of the handbook but also limits the searching of information across the entire publication.
