Less than 24 hours earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin made a rambling unhinged speech, recognizing the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics as independent states, and outlining reasons for expanding his war against Ukraine.
TikTok user gar_moniya posted this video from Novoluhanske, on the northern edge of the DNR. The 1st Army Corps, a defacto part of the Russian Armed Forces, was shelling the settlement despite no military presence. They targeted private homes and apartment buildings.
The video was viewed more than 7 million times before TikTok removed it. At the time, I'm not sure why I had the foresight to save it, but I did.
Less than 24 hours, war would arrive to most of Ukraine.

I have the same hope but I am still profoundly worried about Ukraine's difficulties with mobilization on top of all the other unnecessary problems we have caused them with our small-minded antics. It was a tall order to begin with, but now it seems that on top of expecting these people to all be superheroes with superpowers, we also expect them to somehow manage to pull something off while we send them kryptonite and the Russians pummel them in every front. Are we all just going to start blaming them for not building proper defenses or are we going to help them build them? At this point, who knows.

My hope is that it will end with the world getting off the collective couch and actually get involved in punching Putin in the nose…. Platitudes and appeasement has done nothing but cost Ukraine and its people in blood.
